Today is World Population Day, an annual event to raise awareness of the urgency and importance of population issues.

SPOTLIGHT: First Filipino-British MP elected in UK Parliament

Yes, a candidate for The Labour Party whose mum is a Filipina has been elected to the UK Parliament. He is the first politician of Filipino heritage to be an MP.

Anthony 'Tony' Vaughan, a barrister by profession, won a huge majority to win as Folkestone and Hythe's new MP.

In a double historic win, he is also the first Labour Party MP candidate to win in Folkestone and Hythe in 74 years.

Since its creation in 1950, Folkestone and Hythe has been a Conservative Party stronghold.

Filipinos have been greeting him and sharing the news on social media.

UK GENERAL ELECTION 2024: SIR KEIR STARMER OF THE LABOUR PARTY IS THE NEW UK PRIME MINISTER

The UK's new prime minister is Sir Keir Starmer of the The Labour Party.

He has been formally appointed by the King at Buckingham Palace, replacing the Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak, who has now resigned.

The Labour Party won 326 seats required for a majority in the House of Commons. They won a landslide of 412 seats, ending the Tories' 14-year rule.

Do you know that local libraries in the UK offer more than just books to the public? They host lots of FREE (or low-cost) activities for children and adults!

As a first-time mum and new to her area, Filipina mum Maika Carrillo ( on Instagram) didn't know what to do and where to go. Driven by the loneliness she felt staying at home with her baby, she found the courage to go out and explore the area where she lives. She was in for a surprise!

She discovered the nearby park, playground, library and a host of other places offering an array of free activities for her little one and for the whole family.

SPOTLIGHT | Filipino American billionaire and philanthropist launches book in UK

“Whatever you decide to do, you can do. That’s what the Filipino is. Kaya natin!”

This was the message Loida Nicolas Lewis, Filipino American business leader, lawyer and philanthropist told the audience at SOAS’s Khalili Theatre on Friday evening, 7th June.

Ms Lewis is in the UK to launch her latest book, “Why Should Guys Have All the Fun?”, a memoir that captures her upbringing in the Philippines and her marriage to legendary businessman Reginald Lewis. He was the first African-American to build a billion-dollar business, TLC Beatrice International.

After the sudden death of her husband in 1993, Ms Lewis took the leadership of TLC Beatrice International and turned it into a USD2.2 billion corporation, despite having no previous experience of running a company.

Understated yet elegant in her black beaded top paired with black trousers, Ms Lewis had an engaging conversation with award-winning Filipino British author Candy Gourlay who moderated the discussion.

There will be no consular services (passports, notarization, dual citizenship, civil registration, etc.) on the above-mentioned dates.

In case of emergencies regarding consular concerns or urgent requests for assistance, please call the Embassy’s emergency hotline, (+44) 78 0279 0695. An example of an emergency is an unexpected incident or event that requires urgent action from the Embassy or poses an immediate risk to life, property, safety or health.

The Embassy will resume its regular services on the next working days.

SPOTLIGHT | Filipino chef wins in UK cook off competition

Congratulations, Chef Jerome Jorda, for winning third place in the recently concluded
Asian & Oriental Chef Awards!

Jerome Jorda, head chef at contemporary Filipino Restaurant, Kasa and Kin, will receive one of the UK hospitality industry’s most prestigious accolades, following a national cook off competition in London.

He won third place at the Asian & Oriental Chef Awards held at the University of West London on 20th May.

This is the first time a Filipino restaurant was represented at this competition. He was assisted by fellow countryman, Ralph Pay, his sous chef at the restaurant.

Chef Jerome prepared exquisite offering of a starter comprising a tropical tuna kinilaw ceviche with a main of Adobo Beef with Gata Coconut Cream Sensation.

“It’s been a challenge being able to champion Filipino flavours in a country where the awareness of Philippine cuisine is still growing” says Jorda.

Jorda will be presented with his award at a special ceremony at the House of Lords on 4th July, hosted by Lord Kamall in conjunction with the Asian Catering Federation (ACF), who organised the event.
