Dubai will create the world's first "space court", which will regulate commercial disputes in the space industry.
This was reported in the Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC), on the basis of which it is planned to create a space court.
To implement this initiative, DIFC, together with the Future Foundation in Dubai, will create an international group of public and private sector bodies and experts who will research the legal regulation in the space industry.
Now legal disputes regarding space activities are regulated by international conventions and resolutions, including the 1967 UN Treaty on the Principles of Activities of State Bodies in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space.
In addition, some countries have entered into bilateral or multilateral agreements to regulate space activities. That is, despite the significant commercialization of the space sector, its legal regulation is considered within the framework of the activities of states and institutions.
However, Dubai is proposing to revamp the judiciary and create a new “judicial support network” that can handle complex space-related commercial transactions.
The DIFC noted that the "space court" project will have three main stages. First, the international team should explore space-related legal innovations and develop scenarios for potential disputes regarding space activities.
After that, the experts will create a specific directive, a manual for judges on settling lawsuits, and after its approval, they will conduct special trainings where judges will be taught how to resolve claims in the field of space activities.
