Stories of People and Trees will be on Tiree 30 July – 4 August.
Come and meet Jessica Kerr to hear about the project and contribute your own tree story:
Farmhouse Café, Balemartine – Saturday 30 July from 12-2pm
Hebridean Roast, Scarinish, - Tuesday 2 August from 10am – 12.
She'd like to open up an invitation to everyone on Tiree to get involved with Stories of People and Trees - a project that wants to get people across Scotland thinking and talking about trees that are important to them.
No story is too large or too small – tiny saplings to ancient oaks are all welcome. Your connection to a tree might revolve around a particular event or memory, mark a link to your family history, record significant times that the tree has witnessed, or recognise a tree of ecological importance, a tree that is dear to your community, or a tree that has simply accompanied you through life.
In the first stage of the project, I will be out and about collecting your stories. Then in 2023, a new suite of music will be commissioned that takes inspiration from the stories, and the trees and people within them. Glisk string quartet will record and perform this music to form a lasting musical legacy that sits alongside the story collection. People will be able to link to the online home of the project via QR codes at the sites of trees, to enjoy the stories and music in the company of the trees themselves.
I have already welcomed some beautiful stories into the collection. Involving a diverse set of trees from Oak to Cedar to Sequoia; it has been a pleasure and a privilege to hear these stories that are all so different, but all reveal a deep love of trees and time spent with them.
Children whose story might only be a few words long can contribute their hand print to a giant leaf collection along with anything they’d like to say about their favourite tree or woodland activity– come along on the day to do this, or see a template at www.storiesofpeopleandtrees.com and use your own blank piece of paper or card – recycling strongly encouraged! Find the project online at www.storiesofpeopleandtrees.com or on instagram
