Who Lives in Scotland?, Ep 1/2 µ NEW
Tuesday 25 October
BBC One Scotland, 9.00-10.00pm

Tiree will feature in a new TV series called Who Lives in Scotland? which will go out on BBC One Scotland on Tuesday, October 25 at 9pm.
This new two-part series, presented by Martin Geissler, takes an in-depth look at the people living in Scotland.
It is a measured but fascinating picture of population levels, birth and death rates, age and health issues and of our population spread across the country. And the implications of all this for a wide spread of issues.
The series has been put together with the latest information from the National Records of Scotland, its experts and others.
But most crucially there is testimony and stories from across Scotland, illustrating complex issues with a very human face and perspective.
In the first part, On the Move, Martin Geissler explores the profound impact on Scotland of the movement of people, both within the nation and its new arrivals.
In the second part, Health, Wealth and Happiness, Martin explores the enormous challenges Scotland faces as its population ages and the birth rate declines.
Throughout the series he is a clear and personable guide translating statistics into invaluable information we all need to get a handle on and understand.
As he says in the programme: “Who lives in Scotland is not as simple a question as it might seem, but the answer affects us all.
“Population affects every aspect of our lives – where homes are built, what jobs are out there, and whether there’s enough money to keep the local hospital open.
“Migration has been a key part of that picture for centuries…
“So I’m going to travel the country to uncover the stories behind the statistics. Who is coming to live here, what impact does it really have on the country, and what part might it play in helping build a prosperous future?”
Shifts in population have profound effects on the country.

Stories of People and Trees will be on Tiree 30 July – 4 August.

Come and meet Jessica Kerr to hear about the project and contribute your own tree story:

Farmhouse Café, Balemartine – Saturday 30 July from 12-2pm

Hebridean Roast, Scarinish, - Tuesday 2 August from 10am – 12.

She'd like to open up an invitation to everyone on Tiree to get involved with Stories of People and Trees - a project that wants to get people across Scotland thinking and talking about trees that are important to them.

No story is too large or too small – tiny saplings to ancient oaks are all welcome. Your connection to a tree might revolve around a particular event or memory, mark a link to your family history, record significant times that the tree has witnessed, or recognise a tree of ecological importance, a tree that is dear to your community, or a tree that has simply accompanied you through life.

In the first stage of the project, I will be out and about collecting your stories. Then in 2023, a new suite of music will be commissioned that takes inspiration from the stories, and the trees and people within them. Glisk string quartet will record and perform this music to form a lasting musical legacy that sits alongside the story collection. People will be able to link to the online home of the project via QR codes at the sites of trees, to enjoy the stories and music in the company of the trees themselves.

I have already welcomed some beautiful stories into the collection. Involving a diverse set of trees from Oak to Cedar to Sequoia; it has been a pleasure and a privilege to hear these stories that are all so different, but all reveal a deep love of trees and time spent with them.

Children whose story might only be a few words long can contribute their hand print to a giant leaf collection along with anything they’d like to say about their favourite tree or woodland activity– come along on the day to do this, or see a template at www.storiesofpeopleandtrees.com and use your own blank piece of paper or card – recycling strongly encouraged! Find the project online at www.storiesofpeopleandtrees.com or on instagram

Stories of People and Trees is supported by Creative Scotland

Stories of People and TreesStories of People and Trees will record, celebrate and honour the stories of our human connection to trees.  It will map the entangled narratives that link diverse people and places through the shared presence of trees in our stories, and hopes to inspire everyone to look...
