Our second BRAVE woman faced N**i's as a spy and, upon returning home to America, helped progress the rights of African American citizens!
Bravery is not a one size fits all category, as Josephine Baker is proud to show. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906, Josephine Baker danced in the streets as a means to survival until she was 15. At this time she was picked up by an African American acting troupe who liked her charisma and finesse. This group, especially Josephine, was a key participant in the Harlem Renaissance that swept through the 20’s and 30’s. As her fame in America grew she decided to head to Europe, France in particular, in order to make it on a worldwide stage!
And boy did she! Almost immediately Josephine became a sensation, performing all over France, for royalty and workers alike. She was beloved throughout Europe and loved the accepting people of France, so when Germany invaded France during World War II she knew she had to help in any way she could. She learned German and continued to perform for high ranking N**i officials. Anything she overheard while performing she passed on to the French resistance, becoming instrumental in their fight against the axis powers. By the end of the war France regarded her as a war hero and sadly watched as she departed home for America. Upon returning to the United States, Baker faced segregation and civil rights, things she had not had to deal with in France. She was outraged that she, a war hero, could not get coffee wherever she pleased simply because of the color of her skin. Her outspoken nature led her to be one of the only women to speak against segregation at the March on Washington.
Throughout her life Jospehine adopted 13 children, known as the rainbow tribe because of the various ethnicities her children held. Josephine was a champion of racial and cultural harmony and continued to speak out about civil rights issues (and performing) until her death in 1975.

Our first BRAVE woman needs no introduction:
Malala Yousafzai is the perfect example of absolute bravery, winning the Nobel Peace Prize as the youngest Nobel laureate to date for her dedication to championing girls’ right to safe and fulfilling education . Malala was born in 1997 in Pakistan to a father who progressively taught in a girls school in their village. Malala notes that her father is one of her main sources for inspiration because he was a champion for girls to be educated. Once the taliban took control girls schools were closed and education for girls became illegal. Malala, valuing her education, began to speak out against the Taliban on behalf of all girls and their right to be educated. In October 2012, on her school bus, Malala was targeted by the Taliban and shot point blank in her head. 10 days later Malala woke up in a hospital in the UK with a more refined sense of purpose. She knew she now had a choice to make: “live a quiet life” or “make the most of [the new] life [she] had been given”. She has dedicated her entire life to fighting for the right for girls everywhere to have access to safe, quality, 12 year education, despite backlash and severe personal injury. Malala’s bravery won her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 and her fund (the Malala Fund) has raised millions for the education of girls across the globe. It is no wonder that she is our keynote woman for this week's blog on being BRAVE!

WOMAN # 2 - Amalia Eriksson

Amalia was born in Sweden in 1824 to a farrier father, who, with the rest of her family, died when Amalia was only 10 years old due to cholera. Since she was a 10 year old girl all alone she became a domestic servant to a wealthier family in her village. Although the death of her entire family and becoming a servant was hugely depressing, Amalia held out hope that she would one day own her own bakery. Unfortunately she had to withstand the death of her husband and one of her twins before that dream could become a reality. According to that awesome-book-everyone-should-buy, Bad Girls Throughout History, Amalia’s daughter became ill and she made a homemade cough drop for her out of peppermint oil. This sparked the idea for the peppermint candy that we still eat today! As a single mother in Granna, Sweden, Amalia applied for a permit to open a bakery, which was granted in 1859, and by the end of that year she launched her peppermint candies at her bakery. The candies were obviously a huge success and Amalia became a rather wealthy lady. Amalia remained determined and positive throughout her lifetime and ended up becoming a role model to other young women entrepreneurs!

WOMAN # 1 - Queen Elizabeth I
One of the most well-known Queens in Western History, Queen Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII[1] and his second wife Anne Boleyn. After her father beheaded her mother, because she had a her not an heir, (awkward family drama!) her older sister Mary Tudor[2] essentially locked her in a tower until it was her turn to rule!
Crowned at 25 Elizabeth was ready to rock and roll as a boss Queen of England even though she was just a woman[3]. Her male subjects, however, were not impressed by her genitalia and insisted she get married so they could have a king. Elizabeth, after laughing in their face, immediately decided to NOT get married, ever. She ran England without a king for her entire rule, proving to many, if not all, that she was a boss.
Now, I am sure you are wondering how attitude factors into all this aren’t you? Well Queen Elizabeth had the idea that since God had given her, and her alone, the power to rule she might as well do a brilliant job of it. With that can-do attitude she solidified a crumbling nation under Protestant rule (pi***ng off quite a few Catholics, but oh well!), revived the arts, and pushed England to become a world power in trade. Until she died, her attitude towards her ability to lead never wavered, with Bad Girls Throughout History remarking that “her era is romanticized as the golden age of England – and she did all of it solo”[4]. She’s so awesome the current queen is named after her!
[1] That guy who is only famous because of his six wives: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherin Parr
[2] Also known as Bloody Mary – not the best role model
[3] Obvious sarcasm
[4] Absolutely killer book, a must buy for sure! (Shen, 31)

Whether your kingdom is in a backyard, a classroom, an office or your living room, every woman has a kingdom that they must rule. The ABC’s of Royalty will help each woman unlock her royal potential while learning about other kick*ss women!

I grew up with barbies in dresses and princesses who needed rescuing. I was told Kings chnaged history and Queens happened to be there.

But then I realized, no one would know about Henry VIII without his wives*, or MacBeth without Lady MacBeth. What is Romeo if there is no Juliet or Marc Antony without Cleopatra?

While princesses got rescued, Queens cleaned up after thier husbands, prepared thier countries for war, and saved lives.

As I got older I realized I did not want to be a princess, I wanted to be a QUEEN.

Anne Boleyn.
Jane Seymour.
