Abstract:

Objective: This prospective study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy and efficiency of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) performed by emergency physicians versus traditional radiology ultrasound in the diagnosis of appendicitis.

Design: It is a cross sectional prospective study carried out in the department of radiology ARIRI- MH RWP for a span of 9 months.

Setting: Radiology department AFIRI-MH RWP.

Study Duration: 9 months from Jan 2023 to October 2023.

Methodology: A total of 100 patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of appendicitis were enrolled in the study. Fifty patients underwent POCUS performed by experienced emergency physicians with five years’ post-specialization experience, while the remaining 50 patients underwent traditional radiology ultrasound by an experienced radiologist, with five years of post-specialization experience. Diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and turnaround time were compared between the two groups. Statistical analysis was performed using appropriate tests to determine significant differences.

Results: Diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and turnaround time of POCUS was better than the traditional ultrasound.

Conclusion: In this prospective study, point-of-care ultrasound performed by emergency physicians demonstrated superior diagnostic accuracy and efficiency compared to traditional radiology ultrasound in the diagnosis of appendicitis.

Measles: A Highly Infectious Viral Zooanthroponosis of Public Health Concern

DOI: 10.23880/vij-16000348

Abstract:

Viral diseases, such as Nipah virus, Covid-19, monkeypox, swine flu, Hendra virus, avian influenza, rabies, yellow fever, Rift Vally fever, and others are important cause of morbidity as well as mortality in humans and animals worldwide. Measles is one most devastating viral disease that is responsible to infect around 20 million people globally every year. Measles virus is more infectious than influenza virus. The incidence of measles is higher in children than adults, and outbreaks of disease usually occur in early spring and late winter. Disease can spread rapidly unless the herd immunity is sustained. Hitherto, humans are known as the only natural host of measles, and can infect the monkeys. Clinical symptoms including cough, coryza and conjunctivitis are observed in most of the cases. Laboratory tests, such as immunofluorescence, virus isolation, immunological and molecular tools can be useful to make an unequivocal diagnosis of disease. Since there are no antiviral chemotherapeutic agents are available to treat the sick persons, immunization is the mainstay to control the disease as it provides a lasting immunity of about two decades.

A Complex Relationship between Virus Infection and Host Metabolism

https://medwinpublishers.com/VIJ/a-complex-relationship-between-virus-infection-and-host-metabolism.pdf

Authors: Hassan BAR* and Mohammed AH

DOI: 10.23880/vij-16000346

Abstract:

To replicate efficiently inside the host, the virus can control or exploit a number of metabolic pathways; however, which route is regulated relies on the conditions that are ideal for the virus's replication or its favorable effect. Viruses not only rely on certain metabolic pathways, but they also alter them when they invade. The virus imposes its own metabolic programme on the host cell, interfering with its metabolic regulation. When a virus infects a cell, it often modifies the host cell's metabolic machinery to meet the bioenergetic and biosynthetic demands of reproducing. The current article focuses on the major metabolic pathways that viruses can affect and change.

Abstract:

SARS (COV-2) was recognized in 31/December/2019 in Wuhan city in the Hubei Provence of China. The omicron variant of COVID-19 reported in November 2021. Omicron can have many earlier documented mutations of other variant of concern (VOC) omicron is including 32 mutations of spike like protein, it is too compared of the 16 mutations. The omicron variant has been divided into four linages BA.1, BA.2, BA.3, B.1.1.529. BA.1 which could destroy our immune system and vaccine are not highly effective against BA.2.
