Prior to portraying Freddy Krueger, one of Robert Englund’s early jobs on a film set was being paid to scatter leaves during the production of 1978’s Halloween.

Englund recounted being persuaded by his roommate to work temporarily as a set builder for the iconic movie.

Happy new year, kinfolk!

Want a new movie to watch? Here's the first recommendation of the year: Walden

Walden is about a humble court stenographer, who goes about his day doing work, and attempting to break the stenographer world record. During a trial, after hearing a horrible testimony of a child's unaliving by his father, he begins to have murderous urges. One day, while at the package store picking up an alcoholic beverage, a robber comes barging in, which becomes the catalyst for his rage to surface...

Ngl, this film is a very slow start, but it's worth the patience. Think of this as Dexter, if he was a court stenographer, and everything will make sense. Despite the slow start, I really enjoyed this movie once the story started unfolding, and I didn't see the ending, nor the ultimate culprit coming at all...which was a pleasant surprise.

But don't take my word for it; you can purchase it on Amazon Prime and check it out!

Enjoy!

When I think of Black men surviving horror movies, I automatically think of Kincaid from Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

Dream Warriors already has a special place in my heart, with the line "it's primetime, bitch", (uttered by Freddy as he kills one of the teens by putting her head through a TV) but what I really loved is Kincaid surviving. Sure, he eventually gets got in the next movie, however, he survived his first film, and he was so badass!

I used to abhor Nicholas Cage and his acting...until I watched Day 10's pick: Mom and Dad

This film is about a world under siege, when the TVs and radios start transmitting an odd static...that turns parents murderous towards their kids. It's like the rage virus from 28 Days Later, and we get to see the movie's core family go from loving and nurturing, to insanely murderous, and the kids fighting for their lives...

If you're looking for a resolution in this movie, there's not one. It's open ended, but that's the point of this dark horror comedy. But the best part is Nicolas Cafe ranting, raving, and raging throughout the movie. This movie, along with other indie releases he's starred in since, has made a super fan out of me. Selma Blair also was acting her ass off as a deranged, hysterical mother, seeking to terrorize and end her children's lives. It was a fun watch...

But don't take my word for it; check it out on Hulu or Amazon Prime.

Day 9 of 31 Days of Horror is a dark comedy sure to please: Who Invited Them

This film is about a couple who, upon throwing a housewarming, deals with the intrusion of some uninvited guests. The uninvited couple claim to be neighbors just dropping by to join the festivities, and soon, the drinks are flowing, and everyone is having a great time. The hosting couple decides it's time to wrap things up, but the neighbors become pushy and adament on wearing out their welcome...and everything goes downhill from there...

Im not a fan of more horror comedies, unless they're dark...and this one is pretty damn dark, so I enjoyed it immensely. It's one of the best Shudder Originals released, and is slept on, but it's a fun dark ride nonetheless.

But don't take it from me; check it out on Shudder.

For Day 8's choice, a wild and crazy ride that's sure to leave you questioning your morals: Infinity Pool

The film follows a struggling writer and his wealthy wife who meets a strange couple while on vacation. The couple talks them into staying out late, and on the way back, the writer hits a random man while driving them back home. The couple assures them that things will be fine, and they leave and retreat back to the rooms...

In the morning, both couples are immediately arrested, and are told that all crime committed in the country they're visiting is punishable by death...but they can easily avoid their fates by paying a costly sum, and having a clone made in its place, to receive the punishment. Without fail, the writer pays the money, the clone is made, and they are forced to watch the ex*****on. Unnerved after seeing this, the wife immediately wants to leave and does, but the writer is intrigued, and stays, jumpstarting a vacation from hell...

Somebody said this was The White Lotus on acid, and I concur; that's the perfect way to describe this movie. With Mia Goth playing a bats**t insane and deranged femme fatale (as usual), and Alexander Skarsgård playing against type, this movie really took me on a wild rollercoaster ride of excess s*x, drugs, and violence. It leaves you questioning your morality, and wondering if you'd do the same thing, if put into a similar situation. It's also a great aesop: respect other countries upon visiting, and follow their rules, laws, and respect their customs. And I love that Brandon Cronenberg does not hide the fact that THIS is the entire point he's making with this film. It was a great watch, and the ending just leaves you gut punched...

Check it out on Hulu or Prime.

Day 7's pick is a solid horror movie that honors the Frankenstein mythos with a fresh urban spin: The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster

This film follows Vicaria, the said angry black, who is so fed up with the death surrounding her, that after her brother is killed, she decides that death is a disease...and can be cured. After stealing his body, along with various body parts from graves of freshly deseased persons, she brings him back to life...and everything goes downhill from there...

I was so excited when they announced this film's release, as I'm a huge fan of Frankenstein and scifi horror in general. And once I watched it, i really had to sit with everything this movie made me experience. It's that deep, yall, and despite the triggering content, the story, acting and overall themes of gun violence, drug addiction and the consequences of it, it was flawless. Bomani Story managed to create a masterpiece with his first film, and I look forward to his future releases.

But don't take my word for it; check it out on Amazon Prime or on AMC+

For Day 6 of 31 Days of Horror, a Boom comics adaptation, that was a pretty good watch: The Empty Man

The film starts off follow two couples on vacation in Asia, hiking in the mountains, when one falls underground. One of the friends decides to go after him, and finds him stoic in front of a gnarly looking skeletal co**se. After saving him, the group retreats to an empty cabin, and weird things start to happen over a course of three days, culminating in the group's demise.

The focus is shifted towards a detective who is investigating a series of disappearances and grisly murders of young adult in the town. At the site of the murders, gruesome messages written in blood, stating "The Empty Man made me do it", and this leads the detective, and the movie, towards a satisfying but devastating downer ending...

I had been avoiding this movie for years, since I hadn't read the comic, but finally got my hands on it so I checked it out...and now I know why it has such a strong cult following (no pun intended). Not only did it have a great downer ending, but the twist that was hinted throughout, you still didn't see it coming fully. It's a huge shocker, and made this film one of my recent favorite releases because of it.

But don't take it from me; check it out on Hulu or Amazon Prime.

I love a good home invasion film, so for Day 5's pick, here's a Canadian horror home invasion flick: In Their Skin.

The film follows a couple and their son, grieving the loss of their daughter/sister, heading to a holiday vacation to get away and de-stress. While on vacation, they meet another couple with a son, and decide to invite them over for dinner. Once they arrive, the visiting couple begins to ask intrusive questions about their life, and everything goes downhill from there...

What I loved about this movie is that they take no time in showing us who the villains are, and what they want. This is not a slow burn, as most home invasion movies are, and it's appreciated. On the first meet, the father is pushy and acting weird from the gate, but because of socialization, the couple is warm and inviting to their family. They seem like easy marks, but that's not the case...and it's more realistic than most home invasion movies are set up to be. The story was great, the acting was good, but what did it for me was a satisfying payoff in the ending...

But don't take it from me; check it out yourselves on Tubi, AMC+.

For Day 4's pick, a psychological horror flick that was really good but pi**ed me clean tf off: Speak No Evil

This film follows a couple and their child on vacation, and while at a friend's dinner, they meet another couple. Said couple invites them on a weekend vacation in the Netherlands, and once settled, everything goes downhill slowly...

Ngl, this film pi**ed me off. It's a great watch, but the amount of s**t the protagonists allow the other couple to do to them is ridiculous. It's about as infuriating as watching Funny Games or Soft And Quiet. Their common sense just goes completely out the window, and the wife peeps game almost immediately, but the husband is too busy trying to bond with another dude bro, he just gaslights her and shuts her down. And because of this, every horrid situation they deal with is completely on him, leading to the devastating but completely avoidable downer ending...

You can check this out on Shudder.

For Day 3 of 31 Days of Horror, a Canadian sci-fi dystopian horror flick that pays off, despite the slow build up: Level 16.

This film follows two girls in group of orphan teens living in a strict and sanitary boarding school, that seperate them by age, into different levels, the last being 16. Every morning and night, they have to cleanse themselves to perfection in a timely manner...lest they get dragged off for punishment.

One of the girls, Vivien, was dragged off on Level 10, but is placed back on Level 16, after helping her friend years ago. Said friend, Sophie, tells her not to take the night vitamins, and Vivien fakes being sleep. That night, she and another girl are removed from the bedroom, and brought to a room where a couple is waiting, along with the teacher...and it goes downhill from there.

I'll be honest when I say this is a slow burner but it's so worth it! This film is really slept on because of how drawn out it is, but I appreciate the story building. They make sure the audience is confused, so we won't see the reveal coming...and once that happens, the story makes complete sense and on a second watch, you can catch all the things you brushed aside as filler. If you like The Handmaid's Tale or dystopian movies, this is right up your alley.

But don't take my word for it; check it out on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

For Day 2's choice, a film that is made up of several different subgenres of movies and is a solid watch to boot: Kill List

IFC used to have some solid horror releases, but ever since they turned into the Midnight imprint for their horror flicks, it's been a lot of misses and few hits...and luckily, this was released right before they changed over. Kill List is about a former assassin who decides to do the quintessential "one last job" with his buddy, and is given a list of targets to take out. Upon finding every target, they all weirdly thank him before dying, and this creeps buddy right out. He and his friend decide to not complete the job, but unfortunately, the client threatens them and their family, so they have to finish...and that's when everything goes downhill.

I really loved this movie, as I'm a big fan of cults, and sadly, it doesn't get much love from the horror community, despite it being a solid horror film. Quite possibly, because you go in thinking this is a crime thriller, then realizing you're watching a neo folk cult horror film with a downer ending/bad guys win finisher...so I can understand why people are quite possibly confused about it/don't like it. But if you loved The Wicker Man and Midsommar, with a splash of John Wick, you'll love this movie just as much as I do.

But don't take my word for it; check it out for yourself on Prime, Tubi, AMC+!

Finally out of fb jail, so I can get 31 Days of Horror started!

The first pick? A solid Australian horror film that just came out but is quickly rising to cult classic status: Talk To Me

This film is about a group of friends who decide to play a deadly game of chance: while holding a haunted artifact, they can communicate with the dead and let them possess each holder...until one of the friends goes over the time limit. Once that happens, everything goes downhill from there...

One thing I love is a great downer ending. Even more? A downer beginning. This film has both, and is done so perfectly, with the audience waiting to see how everything falls into place. It was a great watch, and I'm looking forward to the prequel movie that's set to released next year.

But don't take my word for it; check it out yourself on Amazon Prime!

Weirdo Words: Wrath of Becky review

Ever since I watched Becky two years ago, I've been waiting for the sequel, and it dropped this year...and it was a pretty good watch.

This action horror/thriller movie follows our anti-hero Becky, as she goes through the foster system, and runs away, finally choosing to live with a middle aged Black woman in the woods and working at a diner. One day, she ends up waiting on a group of men, who are mad disrespectful to her, so she retaliates by spilling coffee in one of them. That act leads them to seek revenge, and everything goes downhill from there, kickstarting off the plot...

Now one of the themes I'm noticing with the Becky movies are the usage of yt supremacists as the villain (which they are irl as well, so I'm not complaining). What I would love to see is Becky against another group outside of the blatant racists. Yes, I get that their intentions are to make these villains as unsympathetic as possible, so the brazen unaliving of these characters by the ruthless and psychopathic Becky is downplayed. So we the audience can excuse Becky going to such extreme lengths to eliminate these folks, and look past a 16 tear old teen doing such things. But that formula is getting old af, and if they make more movies, they might need to change their antagonists.

Overall, like always, it was a good watch...and I do hope they make another one. But don't take my word for it; check it out on Amazon Prime, and check out Becky first if you haven't watched it.

Weirdo Words: The Passenger review

I'm not the biggest fan of Blumhouse movies. They're essentially more misses than hits, but when they do them right, it's always a good watch. And The Passenger is one that they got right, from start to finish.

This film follows Randy, an insecure, introverted young man, haunted by an incident in his past, that keeps him sheepish and under anybody's thumb. As he works and gets bullied at his fast food job, one of his coworkers, Benson, snaps and unalives everyone in the joint, taking poor Randy hostage, and explains to him that he simply wants to help him and teach him how to be a better man...by making him revisit every traumatic and humiliating experience and face the people behind it. While doing so, Benson continues his random murder spree, dragging Randy right along, while threatening him at every turn, culminating in a shocking end...

Tbh, I didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did, but Blumhouse surprised me. It was paced well, written well, and gave us a sad but satisfying ending. At the end of the day, you felt for Randy, from beginning to end, and it was quite a wild ride to watch.

But don't take my word for it; check it out on Amazon Prime!

Weirdo Words: Sympathy For The Devil review, provided by Run B Run: A Black Horror Podcast

As a former hater of Nicholas Cage, every indie movie he stars in makes me a complete believer of his talent. For years, I could stand this man in blockbuster movies, because his acting and portrayals never fit...until he started doing indie films. And every indie film he's been in, he's been knocking it out the park...

And Sympathy For The Devil is his latest. This psychological thriller/horror film is about an expectant father hurrying to get to his wife in the hospital, who is in labor. As he's about to exit his vehicle, an unknown man (Cage) hops in the back seat, pulls a gun on him, and tells him to drive. As they exit out of the hospital parking lot, the stranger accuses the father of being someone he knows...and has a vendetta against, which he denies. This begins a crazy night full of secrets, mayhem, and an ending you might see coming, but not the way you think it is...

25 minutes into the movie, and I already loved it, due to Nic Cage doing Nic Cage s**t. Just bats**t crazy and insane, deranged acting, and Joel Kinnaman was perfect in being the calm, rational but shaky opposite. Yeah, the ending wasn't shocking, but the events leading to it, and about it, was...and either way, it was a treat to watch.

Check it out on Amazon Prime.
