“Most importantly, [we want our students] to be good human beings. You have to be a good human being before you can be a Muslim.”

16 years ago, Sumaiya Quasim dropped her kids off at Sunday School, hoping to get some chores done while they were in class. Today, she is the Principal of Canberra Islamic School, overseeing nearly 200 students and 25 teachers.

Good Human Beings is a chapter about how dedicated volunteer educators are guiding and supporting Canberra’s Muslim youth.

One Wednesday every month, a small group gathers around the back table of a coffee shop in central Belconnen. Some live with disabilities, and some are volunteers from the now-disbanded support group at which they all met. But what brings them all together is friendship.

This is a chapter about how sometimes lunch is so much more than just lunch.

When lunch is so much more than just lunch.

“But to be honest, that was one of the best things about the closure: it meant the community had to buy into it. We all wrote letters to the members, the community helped build the shed out there. We fought to save the little coffee shop.”

“It’s turned into a real community little spot. He works seven days a week, his wife works seven days a week. They put their heart and soul into this. To start this up, they’re real entrepreneurs. When they shut, we were just, like, ‘oh my God.’”

In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, Sovithyea “SV” Sar quit his job managing a chain of cafes and set up a makeshift coffee shop in his suburban family home. Six months later, after shutting down and fighting to reopen, the front yard of SV’s rented house has turned into an unlikely hub for the residents of Lawson.

This is a chapter about how a man and his makeshift coffee shop built a community which, in turn, helped to build his cafe.

How a makeshift cafe in a suburban front yard became a hub for the community.
