In the face of adversity, some stories emerge that not only inspire but also redefine the essence of determination and gratitude. Such is the story of Mike Raz Navarette, ๐—ฎ ๐—•๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ก๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—”๐—ธ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†-๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ก๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, whose path to academic success has captivated the hearts of countless individuals.

Mike, the fifth of six children of Jimmy and Isabel Navarette, witnessed unwavering dedication in their humble home in Morales, Balete, Aklan, where love and ambition coexisted amidst financial constraints. As workers in various funeral parlors across Aklan, they faced the harsh reality that their earnings were insufficient to support their childrenโ€™s education. Yet, undeterred by lifeโ€™s trials, they embarked on a journey that would change their familyโ€™s destiny.

In 2010, with hands skilled from years of labor, Mikeโ€™s father began crafting coffins โ€”a venture that would lay the cornerstone for their future prosperity. By 2013, their dedication bore fruit as they started their own funeral business. This venture was more than a financial pursuit; it was a testament to their perseverance and dedication.

โ€ โ€”says Mike in our interview, when asked what he felt about having parents starting a funeral business.

The coffins crafted by Mikeโ€™s father became vessels of hope, not just for those in rest but for the Navarette children. They symbolized a brighter future โ€”one where education was attainable and dreams within reach. Through this business, they celebrated the achievements of a Hospitality Management graduate and supported another child through senior high school.

โ€ says Mike.

Mikeโ€™s own academic journey was intertwined with the family business. The coffins that once signified endings became beacons of new beginnings for him. On May 21, 2024, he chose to honor this legacy through a touching graduation photoshoot that featured how the very coffins that provided for his family also laid the foundation for his future in nursing.

When asked about the reason why he chose the casket as a prop, he says โ€œGusto ko po pasalamatan sina Mama at Papa.โ€

When Mike shared his story online on June 7, it resonated with many who saw beyond the unconventional prop to the profound message it conveyed. His post was not merely about his accomplishment but a tribute to his parentsโ€™ sacrifice and unwavering support.

While some may have misunderstood or mocked Mikeโ€™s choice of photoshoot prop, Mike remained steadfast in his pride and appreciation. He recognized that every sneer was outweighed by his parentsโ€™ love and every challenge overcome by their collective strength as family.

On June 4, Mike celebrated another victory. During their Ring hop and Pinning Ceremony, he received recognition for their Nursing Research II. He was among the students who secured third place in their research study titled โ€œNutri-Mission Program: Means to Enhance Health Literacy among Parentsโ€, which aims to recognize the critical roles parents play in promoting health efficacy during child development and growth. Hence, Mikeโ€™s pursuit transcended mere academics; it became a heartfelt hymn, resonating with the unwavering resilience of his family.

As Mike stands on the cusp of becoming a Registered Nurse (RN), his story serves as a powerful reminder that The Navarrete familyโ€™s story is one of unwavering resilience โ€”a narrative that will continue to inspire long after Mike dons his RN title with honor, as he now diligently prepares for the Philippine Licensure Examination in November.

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region VI recently announced the 47th batch of PIA IWAG awardees on May 23, 2024.

Among the recipients, is ASU BSN Level 4 student Joymie Lou Nacabu-an, Editor-in-Chief of the Eamigas Publication.

PIA Region VI established the PIA IWAG Award as a reward program to honor campus journalists who continuously demonstrated their passion, commitment, and excellence in academic achievement and associated sectors, such as development communication. Since 1977, the agency has recognized students for their meaningful contributions to national development through DevCom and campus publications in the region.

Journalism plays a vital role in supplementing the general population with significant information, especially in the most marginalized areas of the country. Such information gathered and reported can be used by the masses to crusade towards a more principled and purposeful life.

The whole BSN CONmunity extends their warmest congratulations on your success. You have served as a true inspiration for aspiring campus journalists who are also eager in following your footsteps. Once again, you have uplifted the mantra na "Basta Nursing, Talagang Magaling!"

Phoenix 71 kicks off Smoking Cessation Seminar

Batch Silab accomplished their seminar entitled: โ€œPanigarilyo hay Likawan, Tapnaon ro Nakasanayan para sa Kamaeayran it Tanan," for their completion of requirements under NCM 117: Care of Clients with Maladaptive Patterns of Behaviors at ASU Amphitheater, May 15, 2024, Wednesday.

"Be an advocate for change. Be a CONtra for paninigarilyo," stated by our very own Mrs. Mary Joy I. Reyes, RN, MAN, LPT, Dean of the College of Nursing as she delivered her opening remarks.

Mr. Julio B. Goboy, Jr., RN graced the floor with his expertise as a smoking cessation clinic coordinator and elaborated different laws that go against smoking. Equipped with stats, he also showcased the process of the smoking cessation sessions offered by the government.

Conducting a smoking cessation seminar for ASU student nurses is crucial as it empowers them to support individuals in quitting smoking, fostering healthier habits and reducing the prevalence of smoking-related illnesses.
