This just in from the kind folks at ... apparently none other than legendary Producer/Engineer Eddie Kramer (Hendrix, the Beatles, Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Clapton, the Kinks, Kiss, John Mellencamp, Carlos Santana) recently got to hear a pair of United Studio Technologies UT Twin87s for drum room.

His response? "Wow."

We, of course, are also a little wowed. Wow!

Check it out! None other than Glenn Fricker of Spectre Media Group got a hold of The Replay Box... and he used it to shoot out a couple of guitar amps. Thanks to the Replay Box, this is the cleanest A/B test possible, as both amps were able to use the identical performance! Glenn's a longtime user of Chad Kelly's original hand-made Signal Art Electronics replay box.

We were sadly just informed of the passing of pro audio legend Bob Heil, founder of Heil Sound.

Throughout his decorated and influential career, Bob created fantastic live sound rigs for The Grateful Dead and The Who. He also invented the Talk Box, made famous by Peter Frampton, as well as a lauded broadcast mic (The PR40) a couple of esoteric mixers — including a modular mixer (The Mavis) and a custom quadraphonic mixer used on The Who’s Quadrophenia tour.

Among other awards, Bob’s recognition included The “Live Sound Pioneer Award” from AES and the Parnelli Award for Innovator of the Year.

Our sincere condolences to Bob’s friends, colleagues, and family on their loss.

Our Story

With over 50 years of combined audio industry experience, our mission is to create the best products money can buy — at a price recording engineers can actually afford.

It’s a labor of love. The UT FET47 represents several years of R&D, blood, sweat, and tears — all to capture the essence of one of the most beloved and classic solid state condenser microphones, and recreate it for the modern recordist. The sonic qualities you’ve been chasing have arrived — at an accessible price, with uncompromised quality. The UT FET47 features a custom Cinemag transformer, a custom Heiserman designed HZ-Series capsule, vintage polystyrene capacitors, and NOS (new old stock) FETs. Custom parts. Vintage new-old-stock parts. Mix that together with each microphone being built in the USA by actual recording engineers, and you have the UT FET47.Painstakingly recreated with the utmost attention to detail; our take on a very classic and much desired condenser microphone that has been used on countless hit records. Realism and thickness that is true to the vintage sonics — now at an affordable price.

We worked with acclaimed capsule designer and manufacturer Eric Heiserman to develop a fresh take on the classic K47 German capsule design. Eric worked with the United team and our capsule manufacturer to develop a new capsule from the ground up, that we are very pleased with. The capsule is open, articulate, and very three dimensional. This process required the analysis of everything from the sourced Mylar to the thread types of screws; but after many months and many iterations, we finally achieved what we had hoped for in the HZ-Series capsules. While many of the HZ-Series design secrets will remain so, one superior attribute we can reveal is the use of dual, matched backplates. With the HZ-Series matching process, a far more accurate and consistent quality from side to side and capsule to capsule is achieved. The HZ-Series capsule is still manufactured only a few at a time, and stringently listened to and tested.

Choosing the best microphone for your needs couldn’t be any more difficult these days. With so many options on the market, and so many claiming to have the vintage sound and failing to deliver, it can be overwhelming. That was our inspiration: deliver the real product: affordably. The UT FET47 represents our true passion for microphones, and was built with a holistic-design approach. With over 50 years of combined industry experience, we at United have spent years on research and development on this microphone.
