We had a great time selling our books and meeting people at Armenia Fest in Royal Oak, Michigan.

We started this project of creating alphabet workbooks 4 years ago when Jenny’s oldest daughter was in kindergarten. Jenny was looking for “A Big Book of Letters” workbook, the kind you find in American supermarkets. Only, she wanted it to be in Armenian, so she could teach her daughter Armenian letters. Jenny couldn’t find exactly what she was looking for, so she asked me, Cathy, to create Armenian letter activity worksheets for her. I did, and the worksheets culminated into The Big Book of Armenian Letters, activities enough for all year, for children ages 4-6.
As you can see, there’s another little sister who’ll be using the books pretty soon!

Jenny’s younger sons, who used the “Big Book” liked the mazes so much, that we also created a book of mazes.

It’s a great time of year to practice Armenian with
“The Big Book of Armenian Letters” alphabet workbook!

It’s full of letter recognition exercises, mazes, tracing, matching, connect-the-dots, and coloring activities, that introduce children to the 38 letters of the Aypoupen (Armenian alphabet).

Great for ages 4-6.

Its spiral binding allows it to lay flat when opened, and makes it easy for kids to color and write.

The maze books are here!
A book full of mazes for your little one’s heart’s content. But not just any mazes. These mazes are shaped like Armenian letters.

This workbook is perfect for children ages 4-5 because it introduces them to the shapes of the letters of the Aypoupen (Armenian alphabet) while they wind their way through the mazes.

We were thinking of English-speaking adults when we created this book - those who might not know the Armenian letters. We translated and transliterated all of the Western Armenian text in this maze book into English. Each page features the upper and lowercase forms of a letter, the name of that letter, and its sound. There are words that begin with each letter, and also a sentence describing what is happening in each maze.

Thinking of our mother, Hourig, on her birthday. Every time she entered a room, it was like the lights went on. It’s hard to describe how wonderful she was. She was a light!

She was also a wonderful teacher. She taught us Armenian even though we lived in this English speaking bubble called the USA. She persevered in this by only speaking to us in Armenian and only accepting Armenian in response. Only speaking Armenian to kids can feel like fighting a battle all-day every day. We are 4 siblings, and one-by-one, at age 4, we each rebelled against speaking Armenian to her.

I remember the day clearly, when I announced to my mother that I was not going to speak Armenian anymore. I gave her the reason that none of the neighbor kids were speaking Armenian to their parents, therefore I would, from now on, only be speaking English. (This whole conversation was in Armenian, I thought it would be my last.) She looked down at me and very gently yet firmly explained that she was very sorry because I would never be able to speak to her again. I was shocked! I couldn’t handle never speaking to her again so I put away that idea immediately. I never tried to speak English to her ever again.

Although we spoke only Armenian to our mother, it was very challenging to spend the entire day at school hearing and speaking only English and then come home and try to remember all of the Armenian words we would need to fully converse to mom in Armenian. She constantly helped us communicate in Armenian by correcting our grammar or telling us how we say our English thoughts in Armenian. She was always patient and tireless in helping us to communicate.

I tell this whole story to encourage parents who can to speak Armenian. It will feel like a battle against a flood of English. But it is possible for kids to learn and to love the language. We (Cathy and Jenny) create our workbooks to help parents teach their kids Armenian.

Did someone say Armenian mazes?
We are up to something new! It’s a book of Armenian letter mazes for young children.
Wouldn’t it be fun to do mazes and, at the same time, be writing Armenian letters? Each path of the maze follows the shape of an Armenian letter. This letter “օ” happens to look like it’s English equivalent.

Beloved Teacher
We are so sad to have lost a very special person. Dickran Toumajan (known by all as “Baron”)was a wonderful and beloved Armenian Studies teacher and professor (language, history, and culture) at the AGBU school and at Wayne State University.

As pillars of our Detroit Armenian community, he and his wife Anahit (also known as “Deegeen”) have taught thousands of students Armenian language and history. They even helped us, Jenny and Cathy, with our first Armenian workbook for kids. When we were creating the book, we would send Baron and Deegeen 25 pages at a time to proofread. Then they would drive across town to meet with us and show us our mistakes. Even during the pandemic, when there was no public place to meet, they invited us to their front porch, and we corrected pages in the warm summer air.

We are forever grateful to have had the honor to know and to learn from our beloved “Baron”.
