US President Donald Trump on Monday signed into law legislation to name a Texas post office after slain Sikh police officer Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal, who was gunned down in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop in Houston a year ago. The post office named after Dhaliwal in Houston is only the second US post office to be named after an Indian American. The first one was named after the first Indian American Congressman Dalip Singh Saund in Southern California in 2006.

Farmer leaders are expected to meet today to discuss a plan of action as thousands gathered at protest sites on Delhi's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to press for the repeal of the new agri laws brace the cold wave sweeping through the national capital. Efforts are under way by the unions to draw support from farmers in other states like Bihar for their demand to enact a law assuring Minimum Support Price as the protest at the border points has been going on for almost four weeks now.

Intensifying their agitation against the Centre’s new agri laws, farmers began their day-long ‘relay’ hunger strike on a chilly morning today at all sites of protest on Delhi's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Protesting farmers will participate in the hunger strike in batches and the first has 11 members. Several roads have been shut due to the agitation and the Delhi Traffic Police have been updating commuters on open and closed routes.

Farm unions have set up a dedicated information technology (IT) cell to counter fake news and “negative” propaganda against the farmers’ protest on the social media. They have created accounts under the name of ‘Kisan Ekta Morcha’ on various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. From having their own IT cell to training leaders to speak English, the unions are trying to counter the “propaganda war” on three agriculture laws.

On a call given by 32 farmer organisations, people paid tributes to the deceased at 380 places in Punjab. The meetings were organised at the protest sites where at the national level, around 90,000 memorial meetings were organised in 22 states.

A large number of devotees paid obeisance at Gurdwara Katalgarh Sahib as the three-day Shaheedi Jor Mela started here on Sunday. The mela is organised every year in the memory of two elder Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh and other Sikhs who had attained martyrdom while fighting the Mughal forces. Farmer unions protesting against the three agriculture laws on said that they will decide their next course of action in the next two-three days, after the Supreme Court earlier this week pointed out it was thinking of setting up an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts and peasants’ unions to resolve the deadlock. Farmer leaders said discussions among unions are currently underway to decide their strategy, adding that they are also seeking legal opinion on the matter. They added that they are ready for a long haul and are in the process to decide their stand following the court’s order.

Amid the deadlock between the Centre and the protesting farmers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged people to read and share widely an e-booklet issued by the government highlighting how the recent agro-reforms help farmers. The government has issued an e-booklet in English and Hindi highlighting the success stories of farmers who have benefited from the reforms enacted in September. He said that, there is a lot of content, including graphics and booklets that elaborate on how the recent agro-reforms help our farmers. The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) today announced that over 30,000 farmers will join the protests at the Delhi borders on December 26 and 27. While a contingent of 15,000 protesters will march from the Khanauri border on December 26, another 15,000 will start march from Dabwali on December 27. The march has been planned to mark one month of protests.

In the past three weeks, 25 farmers have died due to either freak accidents or cold weather. A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde said it would set up the committee which might include experts like P Sainath and representatives of the government and farmers' bodies to look for the resolution of the deadlock over the statutes.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Centre on petitions seeking removal of agitating farmers from roads in Delhi as commuters faced blockades since November 26 when thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Western UP descended on the national capital. Asking the petitioners to make farmers' bodies parties to the petition, it said a committee had to be formed of representatives of farmers' organisations and government nominees and other stakeholders to conduct negotiations to resolve the issue.

The central government said on Tuesday that it had already dispatched cold chain points, freezers and refrigerators for storing COVID-19 vaccines, a development that comes as the country prepares for undertake its largest immunisation drive yet. The state governments have been sent 29,000 cold chain points, 240 walk-in coolers, 70 walk-in freezers, 45,000 ice-lined refrigerators, 41,000 deep freezers and 300 solar refrigerators to prepare themselves for the possible challenges.

The Hindu-American community donated more than 1,33,000 kilograms of food to the poor and needy as part of its “Sewa Diwali” drive. Nearly 179 organisations and numerous individuals came together to collect food for food pantries across the country. The call to hold dharnas was given by the 32 farmer unions who are jointly spearheading the protest. The ho**ah bars are thus banned to operate in Chandigarh with respect to their offering ho**ahs to the visitors. The first of many freezer-packed Covid vaccine vials have arrived in Canada. Canada's health regulator approved the vaccine made by US drugmaker Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech last Wednesday. The vaccines are bound for 14 distribution sites across the country. Quebec is expected to be the first province to administer the vaccine. More of Canada's initial 30,000 doses of the vaccine are expected to cross the border on Monday.

They are using technology to the fullest by using two roti-making machines, which churn out rotis in three seconds and knead the dough within minutes. They also have washing machines and WiFi supported LED televisions to keep them updated about the latest news. For continuous power supply, they have brought generator sets and solar panels at the site.

All four toll plazas in Hisar district located on the Delhi road, Rajgarh road, Sirsa road and Chandigarh road—on Saturday were taken over by protesting farmers, allowing vehicles to pass through without paying toll. Meanwhile in Karnal, on the call given by various farmers’ unions, farmers closed the Bastara toll plaza on NH-44 and Peont toll plaza on Karnal-Jind National Highway-709A. A large number of farmers are at the toll plazas.

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh highlighting the issue on overcharging of Covid patients by private hospitals, said the state government was in the process of fixing the rates. Members of the medical association wanted to meet him to discuss the issue, he said, adding that while he would be meeting them, he would definitely not allow profiteering in the state at the cost of the people’s lives and health in these testing times. He further added that all treatment and medicines for Covid were being provided free of cost in government hospitals.
