US President Donald Trump on Monday signed into law legislation to name a Texas post office after slain Sikh police officer Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal, who was gunned down in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop in Houston a year ago. The post office named after Dhaliwal in Houston is only the second US post office to be named after an Indian American. The first one was named after the first Indian American Congressman Dalip Singh Saund in Southern California in 2006.

Farmer leaders are expected to meet today to discuss a plan of action as thousands gathered at protest sites on Delhi's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to press for the repeal of the new agri laws brace the cold wave sweeping through the national capital. Intensifying their agitation against the Centre’s new agri laws, farmers began their day-long ‘relay’ hunger strike on a chilly morning today at all sites of protest on Delhi's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Protesting farmers will participate in the hunger strike in batches and the first has 11 members. Several roads have been shut due to the agitation and the Delhi Traffic Police have been updating commuters on open and closed routes.

Farm unions have set up a dedicated information technology (IT) cell to counter fake news and “negative” propaganda against the farmers’ protest on the social media. They have created accounts under the name of ‘Kisan Ekta Morcha’ on various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. While the number of farmers who died during the Delhi protest has reached 35, people across the country paid homage to the deceased farmers today. On a call given by 32 farmer organisations, people paid tributes to the deceased at 380 places in Punjab. The meetings were organised at the protest sites where at the national level, around 90,000 memorial meetings were organised in 22 states.

A large number of devotees paid obeisance at Gurdwara Katalgarh Sahib as the three-day Shaheedi Jor Mela started here on Sunday. The mela is organised every year in the memory of two elder Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh and other Sikhs who had attained martyrdom while fighting the Mughal forces. Farmer unions protesting against the three agriculture laws on said that they will decide their next course of action in the next two-three days, after the Supreme Court earlier this week pointed out it was thinking of setting up an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts and peasants’ unions to resolve the deadlock. Farmer leaders said discussions among unions are currently underway to decide their strategy, adding that they are also seeking legal opinion on the matter. They added that they are ready for a long haul and are in the process to decide their stand following the court’s order.

The government has issued an e-booklet in English and Hindi highlighting the success stories of farmers who have benefited from the reforms enacted in September. With the number of casualties during the Delhi protest increasing, the farmer organisations are shaping a new struggle to get adequate compensation for the kin of the dead farmers. In the past three weeks, 25 farmers have died due to either freak accidents or cold weather. The farmer organisations have been demanding a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a government job for the family members of farmers who died in the Delhi protest.
