US President Donald Trump on Monday signed into law legislation to name a Texas post office after slain Sikh police officer Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal, who was gunned down in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop in Houston a year ago. The post office named after Dhaliwal in Houston is only the second US post office to be named after an Indian American. The first one was named after the first Indian American Congressman Dalip Singh Saund in Southern California in 2006.

Farmer leaders are expected to meet today to discuss a plan of action as thousands gathered at protest sites on Delhi's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to press for the repeal of the new agri laws brace the cold wave sweeping through the national capital. Efforts are under way by the unions to draw support from farmers in other states like Bihar for their demand to enact a law assuring Minimum Support Price as the protest at the border points has been going on for almost four weeks now.

Enthusiasm in women to participate in the protest against the Central farm laws is more than their male counterparts. More and more women are committing themselves to leave for the national capital. Around 30,000 more Punjab residents are expected join the protest at Delhi on December 26-27.

Intensifying their agitation against the Centre’s new agri laws, farmers began their day-long ‘relay’ hunger strike on a chilly morning today at all sites of protest on Delhi's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Protesting farmers will participate in the hunger strike in batches and the first has 11 members. Several roads have been shut due to the agitation and the Delhi Traffic Police have been updating commuters on open and closed routes.

Farm unions have set up a dedicated information technology (IT) cell to counter fake news and “negative” propaganda against the farmers’ protest on the social media. They have created accounts under the name of ‘Kisan Ekta Morcha’ on various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. From having their own IT cell to training leaders to speak English, the unions are trying to counter the “propaganda war” on three agriculture laws.

While the number of farmers who died during the Delhi protest has reached 35, people across the country paid homage to the deceased farmers today. On a call given by 32 farmer organisations, people paid tributes to the deceased at 380 places in Punjab. The meetings were organised at the protest sites where at the national level, around 90,000 memorial meetings were organised in 22 states.

A large number of devotees paid obeisance at Gurdwara Katalgarh Sahib as the three-day Shaheedi Jor Mela started here on Sunday. The mela is organised every year in the memory of two elder Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh and other Sikhs who had attained martyrdom while fighting the Mughal forces. Residents of various villages have set up community kitchens (langars) on roads leading to Chamkaur Sahib.

Farmer unions protesting against the three agriculture laws on said that they will decide their next course of action in the next two-three days, after the Supreme Court earlier this week pointed out it was thinking of setting up an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts and peasants’ unions to resolve the deadlock. Farmer leaders said discussions among unions are currently underway to decide their strategy, adding that they are also seeking legal opinion on the matter. They added that they are ready for a long haul and are in the process to decide their stand following the court’s order.

Amid the deadlock between the Centre and the protesting farmers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged people to read and share widely an e-booklet issued by the government highlighting how the recent agro-reforms help farmers. The government has issued an e-booklet in English and Hindi highlighting the success stories of farmers who have benefited from the reforms enacted in September. He said that, there is a lot of content, including graphics and booklets that elaborate on how the recent agro-reforms help our farmers. The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) today announced that over 30,000 farmers will join the protests at the Delhi borders on December 26 and 27. While a contingent of 15,000 protesters will march from the Khanauri border on December 26, another 15,000 will start march from Dabwali on December 27. The march has been planned to mark one month of protests.

To facilitate seamless e-learning in government schools amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Capt Amarinder Singh virtually launched the second phase of the Punjab Smart Connect Scheme, marked by distribution of smartphones to another 80,000 Class XII students of government schools. The event witnessed simultaneous distribution of phones at 845 schools today by various Ministers, MLAs and other dignitaries across the state.

Nirmal Singh’s arms were chopped off while operating a fodder-making machine in 1982. Now, he is 68 and has poor eyesight. But, nothing dampens his spirit. Camping at the Tikri border with several other protesters, he is a prime source of motivation for the youth. He has been fighting for farmer rights for last 40 years.

India is the world's biggest vaccine maker, and the pharmaceutical industry is freeing up capacity and accelerating investments ahead of the global rush for COVID-19 shots. Officials have said they may approve some vaccines for emergency use authorization in the coming weeks.

Nearly 1,40,000 persons in the UK have received their first Covid-19 shots in the first week of roll-out of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech. The vaccine was approved for emergency use two weeks ago, with rollout commencing on December 8, making Britain the first country to deploy the shot outside of clinical trials.

With the number of casualties during the Delhi protest increasing, the farmer organisations are shaping a new struggle to get adequate compensation for the kin of the dead farmers. In the past three weeks, 25 farmers have died due to either freak accidents or cold weather. The farmer organisations have been demanding a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a government job for the family members of farmers who died in the Delhi protest.

The DMK-led opposition in Tamil Nadu on Friday embarked on a day-long hunger strike in support of farmers protesting against the three farm laws enacted by the Centre recently. DMK chief and Leader of Opposition, MK Stalin, party MP Kanimozhi and leaders of alliance parties participated in the protest here.
