Today we return for part two of our conversation about the difference between being trauma informed and trauma responsive or trauma ready, and what that has to do with the challenge to not be a trafficker. In this episode we talk about some specific examples of parallel processes and exploitive actions, ways to wade upstream, and more of our thoughts about trauma ready and trauma responsive services.

Today we begin a two-part conversation about the difference between being trauma informed and trauma responsive or trauma ready, and what that has to do with the challenge to not be a trafficker. In this episode we talk openly about our own ongoing journey with self-care, and challenging systems and norms around what success is and why that matters.

Here we are y'all, episode 13!
On today's episode we really begin to unravel what happens when intention doesn’t consider impact or listen to the folks that are “being served.” We keep pulling that thread all the way through, and name the messages that are sent through some example actions and the way things have been done. Of course we talk transactional relationships, healing and repair, worthiness, parenting, consent, and how programs are operated. It's not enough to just intend to do good, we have to check our motivation, and make sure we're really listening to the people we hope to help.

We are ever grateful to our guest Aubrey Dinslage for joining the conversation the last couple of weeks! Episode 12 is an encore episode, and is one you do not want to miss. Aubrey offers some really beautiful perspective, and shares some really important final thoughts before signing off.

If you haven’t heard about Aubrey yet, here’s some things you should know: Aubrey has been working in the anti-exploitation field for four years and their ideology and politics are deeply connected and rooted to their identities as a q***r and trans person. When they aren’t hard at work dismantling capitalism, Aubrey spends their time with their puppy, River, and preparing for surgery. Aubrey is currently raising funds to cover costs of top surgery and recovery, which is scheduled to occur in the next couple months. Aubrey extends an invitation to support these fundraising efforts in any way you are able.

Our non-profit world of programs and funders love "evidenced based". What does research tell us about what is impactful for survivors of exploitation, gender-based violence and human trafficking?

Truth be told-- there is limited research. However, what we do know (because of research) is that a holistic approach to serving survivors is important- intervention on the individual, relationship, community, and societal level.

We probably all know this, without the research, because we are humans serving other humans. We have an idea of what WE might need to begin to heal from trauma, to rejoin community in a way that we might never have experienced, and take on the hard work of beginning to feel safe again-- we know what we would need and we might even demand- an approach that recognizes our individual needs, our need for safe relationships, and the impact our community and society have on our wellness.

Check out this article on using the ecological framework and responding to the needs of survivors (and prevention). After you read, examine your program-- are you empowered to walk along side your clients? Does your organization allow you to serve a survivor in holistic way? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7357858/

Join Jessyca and Rachel, and special guest Aubrey Dinslage, for part two of a blunt conversation about white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, and what all of this has to do with anti-trafficking work. Aubrey will their perspective on personal growth, relationships, showing up in their community differently, and what that has to do with working with folks who have experienced trafficking. And we will have a great conversation about coercion and exploitation within nonprofits, representation as a historically excluded or marginalized person, accountability, locker-room talk, and gendering conversation styles.

We have enjoyed Aubrey’s contribution to the podcast so much that Aubrey will be back for an encore next week! Don’t miss an episode, find us on your favorite podcast listening app and subscribe!

Are you excited about tomorrow???? We are!!

On tomorrow's episode, special guest Aubrey Dinslage joins us for part two of "that conversation" and we are just so thrilled! Look for the link (or check your favorite podcast listening app!) tomorrow at noon. :)

Aubrey has been in the anti-exploitation field for four years, and is deeply involved in the work. Their ideology and political position is rooted in their identities as a q***r and trans person, and they are not afraid to share about their own journey in unraveling the many ways that white supremacy, patriarchal structures, and capitalism impact their life and the lives of the people they serve. Aubrey is raising funds to cover the costs of top surgery and recovery, any support towards this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

Thinking about how the "to do" or push for self care can be exploitation, coercion. Caring for self is rooted in the ability to work and conduct ourselves in a way that is congruent with our values-- that means leaving the work and the relationships that just don't work for us. And not being forced to do not work that is not congruent with our values because we need health insurance. Some how self care has gotten lost- take a look at the roots of "self care" and how self care is not possible without community care.

We love this graphic illustrating components of healthy relationships. Helping children develop the skills for healthy relationships and building programs that model healthy relationships between staff and clients IS anti-trafficking work. How do you do you build relationship based programs when you are the "professional"?

Well first, you don't use "the professional" (who built the definition of professional?- you guessed it, white men).

You decide staff do not know more than the survivor by honoring their lived experience.

You support and build programs that center honesty and transparency with survivors.

You interact with survivors in a way that allows the survivors to receive AND give feedback and information (no one wants to be in a relationship with a know-it-all, even if the know-it-all holds the purse strings).

You fund programs that allow for time- time for survivors to heal, time for staff to earn trust, and time for survivors to get off course and return with no consequences (attach yourself to the process and not just the outcome (that takes time)).

You do not require success in treatment in exchange for support in accessing basic needs (that is actually what traffickers do).
