Y’all know how I talk about needing some me time but I never really take it because I feel guilty about needing to get away from the world??? Well, I did a thing. Starter locs will have you feeling like you left the salon with an old school roller set. I do not feel cute!!! But this was day one. Walked in with a two strand twist nest, got washed and ready and left out looking insanely neat. I always prefer my nest over neat but I’ve been told to trust the process.

I think I just turned 48. Where did the time go?
Confession: I’ve been struggling with this getting older thing. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful to be here but ain’t nothing graceful about this to me. My hair is different, the weight don’t fall off like it used to, foods I love seem to attack my body (acid reflux is a b***h), multi tasking isn’t as easy, my memory fails me (if I don’t write it down, it don’t happen) and I sometimes just don’t feel like myself. My mind is still stuck somewhere at 35 and I want a lot of those years back. But that ain’t happening. I feel like a late bloomer and the clock won’t stop for me to catch up.

That’s my truth. So, happy birthday to me.

Being a mother to a Black son is one of the most stressful jobs I’ve ever had. I pray everyday for his health and wellbeing as he heads out into the world because I know the world doesn’t always want him there. I’ve raised him to speak up for himself. When he does, I get this strange feeling in my stomach. I feel sick. I can’t tell him to not stand up and not to speak up and I often feel like I don’t know how to teach him balance. He’s a firecracker. He’s a 2024 version of my younger self times 10.

But at the end of the day, he just wants to enjoy life. He doesn’t want to have to wake up thinking about his Blackness and how others hate him just because of it. He wants to travel, hang with friends, enjoy the outdoors and just exist without racism always lurking. He’s encountered so much unprovoked hate at such a young age and I can’t put him in a bubble to shield him from it.

To all the parents raising Black sons, I am sending my love to you. I know it isn’t easy. Prayers up!!!

In 2023, I interviewed Marvin Cotton Jr., who served nearly two decades in prison for a crime he didn't commit after being set up by corrupt law enforcement. He still hasn't been compensated!!!! This is a crime!

The state can provide the wrongfully convicted compensation of $50,000 for each year of incarceration, but the law’s narrow criteria and confusion over eligibility leave former prisoners facing another system that seems stacked against them.

No cooking, no running around, not stress. Just peace and quiet. I hope you all are surrounded by love, peace and joy today. This is the first year in a long time that I’m not stressing about the holiday. At first I didn’t think I had the holiday spirit but I do. I just want my day to full of peace and quiet. I had to convince myself that that’s okay. It’s okay not to stress about the holiday season and to just sit back and relax. It actually should be the norm. Let’s make having peace our norm in 2024. Happy Holidays
