Don't forget, you can see all the trees at the Hitchin Tree Festival at Holy Saviour Church this weekend!

Friday 9th December: 3-8pm
Saturday 10th December: 12noon-6pm
Sunday 11th December: 12noon - 6pm

£5 admission to the festival

We've left gift tags and a pen by our tree, if you'd like to write and add your message of support for the LGBTQIA+ community

It’s been a busy day for the festival with set up in full swing.

We had the first of our exhibitors setting up and boy are you in for a treat. The trees seem to get better every year.

Bright colours, rainbows, tradional baubles, glitter, shiny materials… you name it!

We were also lucky enough to hear the wonderful children from Kingshott practicing. They sounded fab!

They are singing in the church from 5pm (for 10-15 mins) on Friday, so please come and support them.

The holidays, whilst a time of celebration for many, can be a hard time for others. At North Herts Pride, we want to do what we can to support those more vulnerable over Christmas. We are decorating our tree for Hitchin's Christmas Tree Festival with messages of love and support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

We are horrified by the news about LGBTQ+ Bar Club Q in Colorado Springs. Our hearts go out to lives lost, those that are injured, and everyone affected by this cruel and heartless attack. Safe spaces are so important for the lbgtqia+ community, and they deserve to be just that. Safe. 💔

It's ! This week North Herts Pride is hosting 'Pride in the Cafe' in for the first time! This event is to create a safe space for those in the LGBTQIA+ community and allies across 💜

It's taking place on Saturday 19 November at Cafe Luna, Baldock, 35a high street, SG7 6BG at 1:30pm.

"Asked why these issues are so important to her, Kerrie added: "One of the reasons these issues are so important to me is because they are not inevitable.

"They do not have to be a part of life, nor life's troubles, like a flood or earthquake.

"An already vulnerable Care Leaver becoming homeless with no one to turn to, being afraid to be yourself, hearing politicians you've never met discuss whether you should have the protection of the law when expressing your real gender, being attacked for the gender of the person you love, being bullied, rejected, afraid, alone.... people literally dying, they're evitable.

"They are human-made, and it doesn't have to be this way."

Kerrie and North Herts Pride will be hosting a 'Pride in the Cafe' event, at Baldock's Cafe Luna from 1.30pm this Saturday (November 19).

This week also marks Transgender Awareness Week, a time in which Kerrie affirms "We need to be kind to each other, we need to be here for each other.

"The world can be hard enough already."

North Herts Pride director Kerrie Portman, from Hitchin, has been named as "one to watch" in politics by MHP and Mischief.

One of our Directors was one of the winners of '30 To Watch: Politics Awards', which serves to recognise the best young talent in British politics.

"I am indescribably honoured to be one of the winners of MPH's 30 To Watch Politics for my work as Director of North Herts Pride and my campaigning against Care Leaver Homelessness. A year ago I was a homeless Care Leaver myself with no support. When I first got involved with NHP I was homeless. And less than a year later when we hosted North Hertfordshire's first-ever pride it was the day right before I started Cambridge University as part of the pioneering cohort of their new Foundation Year Program for disadvantaged students.

I'm so grateful to the judges for awarding me such a prestigious honour but I'm also grateful I'm able to help those in the LGBTQIA+ community and Care Leavers.

I've seen first-hand how cruel the world can be - I was tortured in care, and being shown kindness is so alien to me that I find it suspicious, but I want to do everything I can to help people."

Today is Intersex Day of Remembrance, also known as Intersex Day of Solidarity.

"On Intersex Day of Remembrance, we think about the injustices that intersex people still deal with. It is still legal for unnecessary and invasive cosmetic medical procedures to be performed on intersex children. As well as this, intersex people are only allowed to change their gender on identity documents, such as passports, if they declare themselves to be transgender. The UK, like many countries, doesn’t have a classification for a third gender/nonbinary gender on identity documents. There is a lot of progress to be made for intersex rights."
