Most people’s image of Pinocchio is the cute, plump litte Disney version. The original illustrations by Carlo Collodi are very different. Here’s the original long, lanky marionette. At Bux Books, we think it makes you see the character a little differently.

Very soon, you’ll be able to check that out for yourselves. We’re putting the finishing touches on our paperback and ebook versions of buxed Pinocchio. Watch out here and on our website for the first extract and for more chat about the wild child and his mad adventures.

At Bux Books, we ‘bux‘ books to make them accessible to readers with higher reading needs. Check out how we do that in this blog post. Link in bio.

We’ve been having a discussion here at Bux Books about paper books and ebooks and we’re wondering if children’s preferences are changing. Many of our followers are parents and teachers, so maybe you can add to the discussion. Which do your kids prefer? Has the pandemic and distance learning changed habits? If so, do you think the change is permanent? If your kids use ebooks, where do they source them? So many questions!!! Please comment below. 📸

A good font is not the only thing we have to think about to make a text readable. How the text is laid out on the page can make all the difference to people with higher reading needs. Have you ever had to think about aligning a text and how it might affect your reader? Or do you notice text alignment?

Not exactly dyslexia-friendly, but amazing! Norwegian nature photographer Kjell Bloch Sandved spotted letters of the alphabet in the patterns on the wings of butterflies and moths. He created the Butterfly Alphabet from his photographs. Seems like the perfect font for summer!

James Joyce’s entire novel Ulysses follows its protagonist Leopold Bloom through one day, June 16, 1904. It is seen as a modernist masterpiece and Joyce claimed that scholars would be dissecting it for generations. He wasn’t wrong! The book moves from many people’s must-read to should-read lists because it’s certainly not easy. But it’s worth reading or listening to extracts for the exuberance of the language. Bloomsday is celebrated worldwide on June 16, with readings, Gorgonzola cheese and glasses of burgundy (look it up!). We decided to celebrate Bloomsday this year with the opening and closing words of Molly Bloom’s soliloquy in our buxilicious font. It may not make the thoughts clearer but it makes them easier to read! Happy Bloomsday!

If we deal mostly with text in English, we can forget that most other languages have a wonderful selection of lines and squiggles to lengthen vowels or to soften consonants. My favourite symbol is the upside down question mark at the beginning of a question in Spanish. Knowing that what you’re about to read is a question must be helpful to readers with dyslexia. Any clues that set up a text before you read help to make comprehension easier. ¿What’s your favourite symbol or accent from a language other than English?

Readability is about so many things. The most obvious are the things that we see instantly on the page - the font, the spacing, the kerning, the color of the background. If you have reading differences or neurodivergence, what helps you to understand and remember what you’re reading? In other words, how do we ‘bux’ a text to make it more readable and to make the story sticky? Tell us what works for you and read our latest blog post on what we do at Bux Books to make books more readable. Link in profile. #

At , we definitely see dyslexia not as a learning difficulty but as a learning difference that brings strengths with it. But it also makes it harder to access text. So we had to consider why reading is harder with before we could create books that remove the stumbling blocks. Are you affected by any of the things on our list? Are there other factors that you’ve experienced that we haven’t included here?
