We did a paranormal “investigation” at Dawns house, and I thought you’d like to see the scene!
1. Dawns “closet room” where our phantom friend gets a little spicy. (Peep the non-threatening manakin in the corner.)
2. The closet, out of which shoes launch out of their box and into the room. (See the shoe boxes? HOW could they do that??)

They start out with “no, not really….” and then they go “actually, theres this one thing when I was 8…”. And then they tell me a bonkers ghost story.

Just joshin. You don’t have to spend your life ❤️ing social media.
On episode 101 we talk about what I’ve learned in 4 years of podcasting. And what I find annoying, which is predominantly Promoting Yourself on Social Media. It’s hard. I don’t get it. I don’t want to make reels.
Basically my Gen X soul is inclined to rebel against the control SM plays in all areas of life. I want to make a cool flyer for this show and tape it to a light pole. 🎸
I also know this is how it works now, so don’t be an old fogey about it.

How many “um”s have been said in 101 episodes of this show? So so many. I try to cut them out so we sound smarter and you don’t poke your ears out. But alas, some make it in.

In the newest episode Cory interviews ME (Abbey) about what it’s been like producing 100 episodes. And this is how I discovered I also say “Right?” after every statement I make.
Thats obnoxious, right? ✂️✂️

SCREAM
On episode 99 Dee Dee is back, sharing some of the harrowing experiences she has faced. We talk about strategies we have used to deescalate or address tricky and dangerous situations.

One she learned in a self defense class is, if you feel uncomfortable, just SCREAM. Like you mean it.
Shes used that one in a Subway.

Dawn’s diary was her best friend, and therapist. She wrote like she wanted it to be found after her death and made into the next great novel.

Before/After 😂
Vicky was stunning during her “first look” time with Patrick. And I think they’re both gorgeous after all the wedding festivities!
Her dress had lost its sleeves, his bow tie had given up the ghost. But they are sooo dang happy, hanging on each other, singing karaoke duets.
I just can’t even.

My bestie is getting married!! In just a few short weeks she’ll be a bride and then a whole ass wife (as they say on Love is Blind).

This is Jenny’s first advice to parents of LGBTQ teens.

There’s nothing to be afraid of.
There’s nothing wrong with your child.

There’s nothing you need to fix.
You just follow their lead, and love them.
That’s your job- to love them.

Love in action means listening, respecting, and protecting- in the way that they need.
Sometimes it’s calling the school, and other times it’s standing back and letting your child navigate hard things on their own (knowing you have their back).

This is what has changed for Kim over the years.
One reason why she sticks with Christianity.
Her understanding of God (now) is fluid and wrapped in mystery, and that feels beautiful and compelling.
She said:
“I’ve been working through my Christianity in my music. There’s just a lot of juicy material for me as an artist. That tells me I’m still following the Christian path.”

That’s when religion is at its best- when it’s a catalyst for creative exploration. Not fear.

At the end of our 2-part saga ⚡️The Skeptic & The Saint⚡️ I asked Kim and Dan “Why Christian?” We’d already covered a lot of the “why not” issues, so I wanted to know why they might stick with it.
Their reasons were deeply personal, from the simple- I was raised with it- to the mysterious pull of an ancient story.

This was one thing Dan noted: “Christianity says god is incarnate in the world…This person walks through the world consistently identifying with the poor and the oppressed. He hugs the lepers, treats women as his equals and he suffers horrific abuse in the end because of it; that that is god. That’s what god is. And that speaks deeply to me.”

What (if anything) about the Christmas story, the life of Jesus, speaks deeply to you?

We’ve talked with a lot of folks about getting “kicked out” of church. Often it’s more of a subtle shove.

Dan actually got a conversation.
But it was not what he expected. He came in prepared for a thoughtful conversation with leadership about the church’s stance on homosexuality. And was dumbstruck when they began with “this is not the place for you.”

At least they were straight forward.

Years after they got kicked out of their church community, Kim and Dan started doing “Bible Breakfasts” at home. The purpose was to give their kid some understanding of the stories in the Bible.
But Kim was learning too.
She had a “very skewed understanding of any books in the Bible.” She had heard one, shallow, white, U.S., male-centric interpretation of scripture. One view of what it all meant for her in a female body.
So learning Bible stories within their cultural / historical context, was new.

💖These two met in a convent (yes, you read that right), started dating and were married in FOUR MONTHS.
They’re still together- as Dan said “Sometimes love wins”.

But this isn’t a love story per se. It’s about being willing to take risks together,
communicating about the core of yourself- even if it’s scary to both of you,
pursuing your dreams- even if they’re not aligned with who you “should” be.

Sloughing off all those “shoulds” so both of you can be fully 100% your most amazing fulfilled self.

I’m a sucker for stories of brave forgiveness.
There’s something so beautiful and strong in offering grace. In reconciling a relationship when you could just let it die.
But- and this a big but- I’m cautious about romanticizing forgiveness because I think women get a lot of toxic messages about self sacrifice. We’re trained toward letting something go, being quiet, submissive, creating peace at the cost of ourselves.
And that is not healthy or loving.

Our last episode has a lot of brave grace. Grace that followed a heartfelt and honest apology. Grace that was freely given, and a tremendous gift.
