Computer Literacy Statistics in Sri Lanka – 2020

The birth of the Information Age which is also known as Computer Age, is associated with the Digital Revolution, just as the Industrial Revolution marked the birth of the Industrial Age. The Digital and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) revolutions are twin revolutions. The rapid developments in ICT have greatly contributed in enhancing human living standards worldwide. The advanced capability of this technology facilitates with extremely efficient collaboration and access to correct, consistent and effective information, which is fundamental to manage the quality in total. In developed world, most of the key economically effective environments are increasingly ICT dominant. Timely and accurate information on use of ICT itself is essential for justification and proper direction of the Government efforts, private sector investments, to study the changing pattern of the demand for internet services and for continuous progress monitoring on ICT achievements. For this computer literacy data, can contribute immensely to an understanding of the demand and supply of skills in the global, knowledge based economy.

To cater the relevant data needs the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) has conducted several surveys on computer literacy in Sri Lanka. The surveys were conducted in 2004, 2006/07, 2009 and from 2014 onward a survey module is attached to Sri Lanka Labour Force Survey. From 2014 onward two separate bulletins are published on Computer Literacy. This bulletin reveals the major findings of the survey conducted in January to June in 2020.

USD and LKR , Premadasa to Gotabaya

The selling rate of the Sri Lankan Rupee hit Rs 199.00 against the US dollar on last few days, central bank data show. During the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in the country, the rupee had hit a record low of Rs 200 in April – just two weeks after it started depreciating in March. Sri Lanka’s rupee has come under pressure from unprecedented excess liquidity, and domestic rupee rates are now lower than dollar yields, inverting forward premiums, which is discouraging exporters from selling dollars, according to market participants.
In 1989, When Premadasa began his tenure Exchange rate of LKR to USD were 40.00. Here We analyzed how this trend has developed over the time. we have separated the graph according to the ruler of the country in that period.

Government Debt in Sri Lanka increased to 12874786 LKR Million in the third quarter of 2019 . Over the past decade Sri Lankan government debt has increased drastically due to various reasons.

Here We arranged few data to understand the “Height of the Debt” in Sri Lanka.

First We assumed Debt value as 12000000000000 Rs.
When it Convert in to Highest value Banknote of Sri Lanka (5000 Rs) Value is 2400000000 No of Notes.
Let's Consider Height of 100 Notes is 1cm, ( It is the common value for most of Banknotes in the world) We need 240000m of 5000 Rs Notes stacks.
Let’s find out how large is this value when it compare with the highest building in Sri Lanka, highest building in the World and the highest Mountain in the world.

Special thanks to Mr. Pandula Nayana Bandara for this brilliant idea.

Key Findings of first ever Sri Lanka Tourism Expenditure Survey

The Tourism industry is an important segment of the Sri Lankan economy. The Recent trends of Sri Lanka’s Gross Domestic Production (GDP) show a significant role played by the service sector, which represents over 60 percent contribution to the GDP. Island economies such as the Bahamas and the Maldives secure half of their government revenue from tourism whereas in Sri Lanka it remains at the fifth place in terms of foreign revenue earnings. Thus, there is a significant potential to develop the tourism industry in Sri Lanka. This is the first ever sample survey conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) to measure the characteristics of the tourism industry separately to economy of Sri Lanka.
With the intention of measuring fluctuations in tourist expenditure, the DCS decided to conduct this survey. For the System of National Accounts framework, the data collected by this survey is invaluable in preparing Tourism Satellite Accounts(TSA), that estimate the impact of the tourism on the national economy.
The fieldwork of the survey started from 1st October, 2017 and continued till 30th September, 2018 using the same sample allocated to the Sri Lanka Labour Force Survey. For gathering information, recall-based interview method was used with a survey schedule. This report based on data collection on 25750 representative housing units covering the entire country presents the results of the Tourism Expenditure Survey (TES) done in 2017/2018, executed by the DCS.

Most ancient symbol of Christianity in Sri Lanka - The Nestorian Cross Of Anuradhapura

People around the world celebrate Christmas today. Sri Lankan Stats would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas with peace, health, and prosperity in the coming year. Here we gathered some interesting information about Most ancient symbol of Christianity in Sri Lanka.

A symbol of a Cross attributed to this Apostle is the most ancient symbol of Christianity found so far, in Sri Lanka. It is the Cross discovered during archeological excavations in Anuradhapura. This was discovered in 1912 first by the then chief draughtsman of the Archeological Department Muhandiram P. D. A. Wickremasuriya.

The most conclusive determination of the cross's origins was made in 1926 by Humphrey Codrington, based on evidence contained in a 6th-century manuscript, Christian Topography, that a community of Persian Christians were known to reside in Taprobanê (the Ancient Greek name for Sri Lanka). Codrington wrote in his book, A Short History of Ceylon, that "about A.D. 500 we read of a Persian colony; a Nestorian cross undoubtedly belonging to this community is to be seen in the Anuradhapura museum". In 1954 the then assistant Archaeological Commissioner, Titus Devendra, dismissed the historical reliability of the Christian Topography and attributed the cross to the Portuguese dating it later than 1547. Academics however have since concluded that the Christian Topography is historically accurate. In 1984 an archaeological find at Manthai confirmed the existence of Persian Christians in Sri Lanka, including a seal with a Nestorian cross, with similar stylistic features to the Anuradhapura cross.

The cross is considered as a variation of the St Thomas Cross due to its similar shape and possible links between the early Christian community in South India and Sri Lanka. The Anuradhapura cross however has unique features when compared to other crosses. The three main elements that the Anuradhapura cross has in common with Nestorian crosses are: the "leaves" (with their upward facing fronds) at the base of the cross, which symbolize the "tree of life" (the vitality of the tree is accentuated by its fruit-like protrusions); the second element is that each of the arms of the cross terminate in a pearl. Pearls played a central theme in Syriac devotional literature and iconography. The third element is the base, which is a three-stepped pedestal. The three tiers symbolize the three levels of paradise, the three decks of the ark, and the three limits of ascent to Sinai.

The Anuradhapura cross was featured in the official logo of Pope Francis' visit to Sri Lanka. The Nestorian Cross of Anuradhapura is now housed in the Archaeological Museum there.

Who is Kali ?

Hinduism is the product of 6000 years of contradicting and coalescing religious ideas, in which time is cyclical, the world’s an illusion, and more or less everyone is an incarnation, reincarnation, preincarnation, aspect, or avatar of someone else. For the most part, Hindu gods don’t have consistent, universally accepted relationships with one another, and even the most popular have seemingly contradictory myths.

# Brahman

The Ultimate Reality in the universe. it is the material, efficient, formal and final cause of all that exists. It is the pervasive, infinite, eternal truth and bliss which does not change, yet is the cause of all changes.

# Brahma

Brahma is the first of a trio of major Hindu gods called the “Trimurti,” which includes Brahma, the creator, Vishnu, the preserver, and Shiva, the destroyer. According to some sources, Brahma wasn’t the first god — Vishnu was. Vishnu created a vast primordial ocean, and then a hundred headed snake to float on as he meditated. Then, from Vishnu’s bellybutton emerged a lotus, and from the lotus emerged Brahma, and from Brahma’s meditation emerged everything else.

# Vishnu

Depending on the source, Vishnu is either one of the most important gods in the universe, or the most important god in the universe, or he literally is the universe, or (more likely) all of the above. One of the largest branches of Hinduism, Vaishnavism, holds Vishnu as its top god. He’s called the preserver (opposite the creator, Brahma, and the destroyer, Shiva) and his role is to keep the universe universing until it’s time for it to end.
While he’s often addressed as more of a concept than a character, Vishnu’s probably most famous for his avatars – that is, the times he took actual, physical, earthly forms to deal with actual, physical, earthly threats. But we’ll get to those in a second.

# Shiva

He’s often called the destroyer (alongside Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the preserver), but that might not mean what you think it means. Or — well, yes, he does destroy worlds, and returns everything to the formless chaos from which it emerged, but philosophically speaking that’s not a bad thing, because a) everything’s cyclical and destruction is required for creation, and b) he’s only destroying illusions anyway — the real, all-encompassing truth of the universe survives.
Shiva has a third eye, from which he can produce a laser beam made of pure fiery enlightenment. He’s used it to destroy demons, gods, things that annoyed him, and, in one story, millions upon millions of cows.

# Saraswati

Saraswati is a goddess of wisdom, learning, and the arts, and the wife/consort of Brahma. She’s often put into a group called the “tridevi,” opposite the trimurti, which is made up of the female counterparts of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. She’s also very old, showing up in some of the earliest Hindu texts as a goddess of water and purification.

# Lakshmi

Lakshmi, also called Sri, is a goddess of wealth and luck and wife to Vishnu. Her birth is the end of one of Hinduism’s great myths, the Churning of the Ocean of Milk.

# Parvati

She’s a goddess of love and devotion, beautiful, kind, fierce, harmony, marriage, children, and devotion. Parvati is the wife of the god Shiva. She is the reincarnation of Sati, Shiva's first wife who died during a yajna

# Kali

Kali is the chief of the Mahavidyas, a group of ten Ta***ic goddesses who each form a different aspect of the mother goddess Parvati.

Kali's earliest appearance is that of a destroyer of evil forces. She is the most powerful form of Shakti, and the goddess of one of the four subcategories of the Kulamārga, a category of Ta***ic Saivism. She destroys the evil in order to protect the innocent. Over time, Kali has been worshipped by devotional movements and ta***ic sects variously as the Divine Mother, Mother of the Universe, Adi Shakti, or Adi Parashakti. Shakta Hindu and Ta***ic sects additionally worship her as the ultimate reality or Brahman. She is also seen as the divine protector and the one who bestows moksha, or liberation. Kali is often portrayed standing or dancing on her consort, the Hindu god Shiva, who lies calm and prostrate beneath her. Kali is worshipped by Hindus throughout India and Nepal.

- Age of first s*xual in*******se by Sri Lankan Women.

The 2019 Women’s Wellbeing Survey (WWS) was Sri Lanka’s first national survey on violence against women and girls.

In This Research Most women identified that their first s*xual experience occurred as an adult, that is from the age of 18 and older (79.7%). For 29.5% of women their first experience of s*xual in*******se was in early adulthood, between the ages of 18 and 21 years. A small proportion had their first experience during adolescence (8.7%) or below the age of 15 (1.0%).

For women who have had s*x, most said their first experience of s*xual in*******se was something they wanted (95.6%). For 2.5% of these women they were pressured into having s*x when they did not want to or were forced to have s*x (0.4%). When looking at the nature of women’s first experience of s*xual in*******se by the age they were at that time, women who had their first s*xual encounter before at 18 were more likely to be pressured or forced to have done so (e.g. 7.3% of girls younger than 15 were forced and 12.1% did not want to but were coerced or pressured)

During last few decades family planning assisted many couples to plan their reproductive lives. In Sri Lanka, the first state run family planning clinic was opened in 1937, but it was not continued.
In 1965, family planning was combined with maternal and child health programmes and three years later the Family Health Bureau (FHB) was established to coordinate family planning under the Ministry of Health. In the developing world, woman’s reproductive health mostly depends on government policies and programmes providing access to contraceptive methods. Direct support entails the provision of family planning services through government-run facilities, such as hospitals, clinics, health posts, health centers and through government fieldworkers. In Sri Lanka, free family planning services are given by primary care facilities and hospitals. Public health nurses and midwives provide maternal and child health as well as family planning services at the grass root level. Oral contraceptive methods and condoms are available without prescription from pharmacies and government and private sector facilities are available island-wide for other contraceptive methods.

There are considerable variations in CPR across district. Currently married women in the districts of Mannar (18 %), Vavuniya (33 %) and Batticaloa (32 %) reported the lowest levels of contraceptive use, while Kalutara, Matale, Galle, Polonnaruwa, Badulla, Moneragala and Ratnapura, all registered CPRs of 70 percent or higher Contraceptive use is very similar across wealth quintiles (values around 64 percent.)

However: the higher the level of education, the lower the use of modern methods. At the same time there is a higher preference for traditional method use among more educated women specially Rhythm.

Main Traditional methods,
- Rhythm
- Withdrawal

Level of Domestic Violence in Sri Lanka

One third of woman all over the world suffers from domestic violence by intimate partner. This is considered as a hidden problem in most of the women do not reveal about their sufferings due to reasons such as culture, fear of reprisal, and concern over children, shame and internalizing the violence. It is also an ever increasing burden to the health care services, social and economy of the country.

In Sri Lanka More women from the urban sector have experienced violence (20 percent) compared to women living in the other sectors (16 percent of the rural and 17 percent of estate counterparts). Experience of violence by the intimate partner among ever-married women varies according to the districts of residence: in Batticaloa and Kilinochci, the districts with the highest prevalence, half of the women indicated to be affected by violence from their intimate partner. Figure 13.2 shows clearly the highest domestic violence prevails in Northern and Eastern provinces. In c ontrast, in Hambantota, Anuradhapura and Monaragala, the districts with the lowest prevalence, less than eight percent indicated to be affected by domestic violence by an intimate
partner.
