Divorcees and suffragists in the ballroom?😱 Shocking!

The podcast is back and we're breaking down Season 3 Eps 5-8! ⭐ Link in bio

As episodes build to the climactic end-of-season balls:
Gladys & Bertha team up to fight a second revolutionary war;
Peggy triumphs in dance-floor romance and in her career;
and Ada takes her seat at the head of the table.

Then there’s that other war: Mrs Scott vs Mrs Kirkland battle royale in the dressmaker's fitting room.

We cheer for both young Jack, and Oscar, who movingly mourns John while growing an inspired beard.

And we grumble about the men who are making a mountain out of a molehill (ahem, Railroad Daddy).

Bonus: More Downton Abbey callbacks than there are diamonds around Mrs Astor’s neck!

Tune in for our film podcast in September! (sniff, sniff) as we say goodbye to Downton!

ONLINE Nov 3rd! I'm thrilled to be moderating this fabulous event featuring my friends Nicole Louie and Molly Peacock ⭐ We're celebrating two generations of women without children, one friendship, and two fabulous new books!

Nicole's book OTHERS LIKE ME is launching in Canada on November 5th by House of Anansi Press and so is THE WIDOW'S CRAYON BOX by the wonderful Molly Peacock (who also happens to be Nicole's mentor and one of the stars of My So-Called Selfish Life) 🥳

What happens when an exchange of tweets morphs into a richly layered writers' relationship about the choice to not have children?

Nicole Louie, in the midst of interviewing women without children around the world, reached out to Molly Peacock, who had written about her choice a quarter century before.

A unique relationship evolved as the South American Nicole and the North American Molly began to correspond. Nicole asked Molly to mentor her through a process that resulted in the book Others Like Me. Molly, inspired by the reproductive rights issues in the next generation, said yes.

During their Zoom conversations, Molly's husband was ill and eventually passed away. She began the poems in The Widow's Crayon Box, a book about a passionate marriage that began with an agreement to not have children. On different sides of the Atlantic, Nicole and Molly have made a tapestry of writing inspired by their own journeys as women who won’t become mothers.

Massy Arts Society provides a perfect virtual stage to introduce these new books to a global audience. Filmmaker Therese Shechter, whose film My So-Called Selfish Life, takes its title from Molly's memoir about her choice not to have children, Paradise, Piece by Piece, will moderate the discussion.

Join us for a program of friendship, generational decisions, reproductive choices, childfree marriages, poetry and prose.

Whether you are consciously child-free, childless by circumstance, undecided on having kids, or your family simply differs from the traditional model, you are part of a powerful and rapidly growing voter bloc, one with enormous resources and energy. This event will emphasize how we can begin to build solidarity and political power amongst ourselves, both in the 2024 election cycle and beyond. All are welcome including parent allies!

This is a non-partisan grassroots webinar. No candidates, no fundraising.

My So-Called Selfish Life is a revolutionary documentary about one of our greatest social taboos: choosing not to become a mother.

***

This Sunday, North America will be celebrating the annual holiday that makes otherwise well-intentioned strangers wish all women a Happy Mother's Day.

The day is joyous for some, and rough for others. It's brunch and flowers, and it's also a reminder that in our pronatalist world, a woman's uterus is considered her most important contribution to society.

As the great Orna Donath says in the film: “I think we are being applauded only when we decide what society wants us to decide.”

This complexity is what makes My So-Called Selfish Life the perfect Mother's Day conversation starter.

This weekend, we invite you to watch the film with a friend or family member, slide into that awkward conversation you've been putting off, enjoy the alternative programming alone, with chocolate, or with your human or animal BFFs.

Or just watch it again to catch all the pop culture references you missed the first time through.
