Muslim-Muslim ticket insensitive, insult to the nation

~ Edo PDP Senatorial Candidate, Iduoriyekemwen Matthew

….says Okowa possesses the intellectual capacity to lead

The candidate of the PDP for Edo South Senatorial District, Hon. Mathew Iduoriyekemwen has kicked against the Muslim-Muslim ticket reportedly mulled by the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, where standard-bearer Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a Muslim from the southern region, has been tipped to pick another Muslim from the northern region as his running mate.

According to Iduoriyekemwen, selecting another Muslim as Tinubu’s running mate would amount to an insult to the entire nation and an act of insensitivity to the country’s religious divide.

He said: “I think that is the biggest insult to us as a nation. That’s being insensitive to the other people that exist in this country. This country whether we like it or not, is a Muslims dominant North and Christians dominant South. It must reflect in everything that we do.”

“Yes! I am not a religion fanatic but I believe also that everybody should be carried along. I won’t support for instance a Christian, Christian ticket neither will I also support Muslim, Muslim ticket.”

Asked whether competence should not be the primary yard stick in choosing candidates for office, he said: “Are you going to tell me that you cannot get a Christian who has capacity? Show me that Muslim who has capacity and will show you many Christians who have capacity too. I know in this country, there are Christians who can actually govern this country.”

“President Goodluck Jonathan was a Christian: from the things he did, the few years he was there, did it not show to you he has capacity? In this country, I think as a plural society, we must make everybody have that same sense of belonging. Do you know why I am not bothered about it? My party is not flying Muslim, Muslim ticket.”

He also defended the choice of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP, saying that he possesses the intellectual capacity to lead.

“First and foremost let us look at who this man is. This man is a medical doctor. I am sure when you were younger and you were writing JAMB; your brain must have been up there to pass JAMB to be able to read medicine.

“Therefore, the man as a medical doctor; means he has intellectual capacity. Since he entered politics, the man has been a secretary to the local government, he has been a local government chairman, commissioner in three different ministries in Delta state, Secretary to the state government in Delta state, this man has gone to the senate to represent Delta North senatorial District in Abuja to have a national feel, this man has been in government as Governor of Delta state and doing well in Delta state for the past seven years. Because the man doesn’t make noise and shout like some people shout?

“I see in Okowa a vice president who will subordinate himself to the president and work with him at the same time adding value to the system.”

Our dear Governor Godwin Obaseki deserves commendation for the leadership tenacity he has exhibited just now, setting up a peace and reconciliatory committee to be chaired by Edo former Governor, Lucky Igbinedion aimed at resolving the prolonged cracks in Edo PDP

Howbeit, Governors these days would squeeze perceived political enemies in a bid to control the resources and machineries of state and party

That the Edo State Governor, today, assembled leaders of the party in the State to propose peace and reconcile warring factions shows the Governor mean well for the State and Party

Former Governor Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion must now quickly swing to action, select members of this all-important committee from across the 3 Senatorial Districts, act within the terms of reference if any, and rally aggrieved party leaders, members to one table especially as we go into heated and long-drawn campaigns

We must remain in power and Edo must deliver

To our leaders and Comrades on the other side, you will be getting calls soon from the Committee, however the call may come, let us kindly oblige, for the sake of the soul of our Party and State; we have worked too hard to get to this level, it will be illogical and unproductive to now miss the gains because of conflicts

2022 Democracy Day Message

As we mark the 2022 Democracy Day, I enjoin Nigerians to uphold the ideals of our nation's founding fathers, who fought assiduously for the realisation of an independent country rooted in the values of justice and equity.

Our democratic sojourn has taught us deep lessons on the centrality of freedom and unity to coexist despite our differences.

As the years go by, we have more reasons to remain steadfast in the belief in a shared destiny and our continued existence as a formidable collective that would thrive in spite of the fissures that try to break us.

Since our return to democratic rule in 1999, we have continued on a very crucial task of engendering development in Nigeria, even with the attendant daunting challenges.

We are at a crossroads, as it appears we are yet to get the full dividend of democracy and feel unsure sometimes of the gains of democracy. It behoves on us to keep faith and trust the process, as democracy is a self-renewing process and we are definitely sure to get it right if we stay the course.

On this Democracy Day, I call on Nigerians to recommit to the process of renewing ourselves and work in unison to make our country live up to its promise as the greatest black nation on earth.

Obaseki is the master strategist, Wike's failure still have not thought him a lesson. He is angry because Obaseki did not fall into his trap

Very soon he will understand Obaseki's sacrifices in the convention and thank God Atiku Abubakar understands the sacrifices Obaseki did for the party

*Children’s Day: Obaseki pledges improved welfare, sustained investment in education for a better future*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will sustain investment in the education sector to guarantee a better future for children in the state.

Obaseki, in a statement to commemorate this year’s Children’s Day, promised to improve the welfare of Edo children, ensuring that they are provided with the environment, skills and opportunities to realize their fullest potential.

He said, “Today, we celebrate those who bear our hope for a brighter future, our children. We reinstate our administration’s commitment to the protection and welfare of these children, giving them a voice and providing them with the environment, skills and opportunities to achieve their dreams and live life to the fullest.

“As a government, we understand the important role education plays in achieving an all-round development of a child and will continue to invest massively in education, upgrading our school infrastructure and bequeathing our children with the knowledge to compete favourably in a technology-driven 21st century.

The governor, who assured that reforms and policies being implemented in the state’s basic education sector would encourage parents to send their children to school, added that “The Edo State Government through the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme is improving learning outcomes and providing a robust opportunity for children to get a quality basic education.”

Obaseki said his government has strengthened institutions in the state to enforce the Child Rights Law, to ensure that children are protected from abuses, especially child labour.

He added, “The state government is currently embarking on the prosecution of parents and guardians of out-of-school children as part of measures to take all children off the streets and improve access to education. We have also enacted the Violence Against Persons (VAP) law to protect children from all forms of abuse which include the use of children for cheap labour, thereby denying them the chance to actualise their future aspirations.”

*Obaseki eulogizes late Dr. Akele, hails support for reforms in healthcare system*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has eulogized late Dr. Mrs. Clara Akele, hailing her contributions to the development of the state’s health sector while she was alive.

The governor, who led other top government officials to pay last respects to the late retired Permanent Secretary, described late Dr. Akele as “one of the pillars of our healthcare system.”

He said, "Occasions like this, we are bound to be sad and feel a sense of loss. I think that as Christians, we should take solace given the fact that the person we are here to mourn her transition is a person who lived a good life.

"She is somebody who lived a good life that was meaningful, not just her immediate family but many members of the society. She was one of the pillars of our healthcare system.”

Obaseki added, “I know she was not particularly happy with the state of the health care system she left behind, but we thank God we are building a resilient and efficient health system in Edo, which she was very passionate about.

"We thank God for her life; we thank God for her service to humanity. We have every reason to celebrate her life and not be sad about her passage. She contributed her beat and she's now resting in the Lord.

"We just pray that God should give all of us the strength to bear the loss and pray for her soul.”

Earlier, the first son of the deceased, Mr. Godfrey Aletor, thanked the governor for supporting the family in their time of grief.

Just In

The court of appeal held today that the election of adhoc delegates not being election of aspirants/candidates within the contemplation of the electoral act, is the internal affairs of the political party and therefore no court has jurisdiction to entertain it.

In other words, it is the delegates recognized by the party that are the delegates known to law.There is no doubt that the party has since recognised the delegates from the side of the Governor.
