One week and one day following the 10th deadliest mass shooting in US History that took place in a city I once called home. I have taken the time to allow the manhunt to conclude, the initial investigation to take place and for the facts to come out. There isn't a whole lot that I can say about what happened other than I'm keeping the victim's, their family and friends, as well as all of the amazing first responder's that came from across New England to help on the night of Wednesday, October 25th. At 6:56pm when the initial 911 call was received by the Lewiston-Auburn 911 Center is when Maine changed forever. A lot of us thought the same, that it wouldn't happen here, we are such a small state and everyone knows each other. To put it in contrast, we have 1.3 million residents over 35K square miles, versus NYC with over 6x our population in a little under 500 square miles. A lot of us know someone who died or was wounded in this shooting, and if you don't, you more than likely know a family member or friend of theirs. It was heart wrenching but also amazing to hear every single deputy from the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office sign enroute, several local PD units, and eventually hundreds of Firefighters, EMTs and other first responders from across the state and New England come to help. When Androscoggin County Communications toned every fire department in the county to respond and everyone put their life on the line to go help others, it was a true testament to how much our first responders care. 18 people perished with 13 more injured that night. Not only did it affect them, their family and friends, and the first responders but it also changed the lives of the Card Family, whom I should remind people they did nothing wrong and they are grieving too. Over the past week+ it has been incredible to see the out pouring of support from several local businesses to individuals and more. There is too much to name on an individual basis but some I would like to recognize are the Boston Bruins for all they did, L.L.Bean for their $250,000 donation, and Taylor's Tins whom sold helmet shields then donated 110% of proceeds. Maine came together and we're gonna come out stronger. I appreciate and thank each and everyone of you who responded that night and did all you could. Thank you.
