Citizenship victims rage, warn against state indifference to their cause
Citizenship has become a pressing issue in Nepal after the federal parliament failed to pass the Bill to Amend Nepal Citizenship Act (2006), which was expected to address citizenship problems.
The citizens who have been denied citizenship documents by the government authorities, even as they qualify for it, and those who had to struggle to obtain citizenships for themselves and their children despite the constitutional provisions not to render any Nepali stateless, expressed rage against the government authorities and parliamentarians for ignoring their genuine cause.
Such concerns were raised on Wednesday in the third series of Gyan Gosthi, a discussion forum, where people who are struggling, and those who struggled, to obtain citizenships shared the suffering and hardships they faced due to lack of certificates, and stories of how the government authorities denied them the main legal identity documents under various pretexts.
Speaking at the program, Indrajit Safi, a civil engineer who hails from Dhanusha, spoke of how he has been suffering due to lack of citizenship certificate. “My parents were born in Nepal, I was born in Nepal, lived here and studied here but I was denied citizenship by the local authorities,” he said. He said he could not pursue engineering studies here in Nepal because he had no citizenship certificate. “I had to go to India for studies. Once in Delhi the police even suspected me of being a terrorist because I had no identity card,” he said.

Despite the jocular definition of 'secularism;, and the procliamed designation of the nation of Nepal as a socialism-oriented state, we need to protect and progress on this consttution.

Mental health issues..

Mental Health issues to be addressed, not mythologized and stigmatized

Interfaith Peace Federation- Nepal (IPFN) organized a 2-day training for national-level faith leaders on 5 and 6 September at Ageno Restaurant, Lalitpur.

Facilitated by Renuka Manandhar and Susmita Bogati, both psycho-social counsellors and health workers, the training made the participants aware of the seriousness of mental issues, debunked myths and stigmas related to mental health and illness, and clarified the difference between symptoms and signs.

But the state has only allocated 1% of its budget to mental health.

Lately, emotional and spiritual health and well-being is also included in the definition of health.

Nepal su***de data is alarming- 19 persons commit su***de every day. It has increased in 2020 as comapred to 2019 by 25%.

People show some signs before committing suicede- like attention-seeking, remaining aloof etc- which are subjective. Symptoms are objective- are the resultant health issues. Such signs include: disturbances in appetite/eating habit, sleep disturbances, change in behavior, change in talk/speech, change in daily routine/activities, change in inpersonal and social behavior.

Depressive Disorder- if sad/low, hopeless mood persists for over 2 week, it is a serious symptom.

Anxiety Disorder- is the feeling of worry casued by perceived threats in the environment.

Psychosis- when a person loses contact with reality, and lives in fantasy, past trauma etc.

In Neuritic disorder, one is still in present, whereas in psychotic disorder, one lives in the past.

Some myths: Mental illness is incurable; it is a stigma; it won’t happen to me; no need of therapy and counselling, but pills will do; all mental patients are crazy or mad, etc.

The training ended with ways to cope with, prevent, diagnoze early, and provide Menatl First Aid.
