Today we celebrate that our Afro-latin podcast has reached 30,000 downloads!!! Can you believe it?? We are very grateful for our listeners and supporters! 🙏🏽🙏🏾

We started out as two people who just wanted to explore ways to make our dance scene anti-racist and now people from more than 80 countries have listened to our guests center the contribution of Black people in LatinAmerican and Caribbean culture, dance and music.

We have worked hard for you! We have produced:
6 episodes of season 1 (Racism and discrimination in the local dance scene)
10 episodes of season 2 (Afro Latin, Afro Caribbean, and African Rhythms)
25 episodes of Were You Listening? contextualizing songs talking about blackness
16 Singles with extended interviews with our wonderful guests

There you have it. A wealth of knowledge to connect to and honor the black roots of the dances, rhythms, and songs you love. For free 99 (with the help of two grants from the Orange County Arts Commission ).

Journey:
- Ebonie’s desire to explore dance and music of the African diaspora was sparked after practicing in the Nishikawa school of classical Japanese dance. 🇯🇵
- She was introduced to Brazilian Zouk by Adrian ‘Atoro’ Lopez and was immediately enlivened by the flow, spiraled movement and visual lead/follow dynamic. 🇧🇷
- She’s continued learning Lambada and Brazilian Zouk and co-founded the Brooklyn-based dance school Zoukphoria with emerging instructors. 💃🏾🗽
- She now resides in Denver and teaches at events nationally.

Fun fact:
- She has a side hustle as a chocolate maker! 🍫

Join us for a zouk party in the Antilles! We explore the birth and development of the zouk rhythm and its dance in Guadeloupe and Martinique. We touch on the pioneer role played by the famous band Kassav’ , the importance of the notion of creolness, and how the Caribbean rhythm sprung a new dance style in Brazil which then expanded across the world.

Dr. Dominique Cyrille is an advisor for museums, intangible cultural heritage, and industrial scientific knowledge at the ministry of culture, French Guiana; siblings Joyce-lee Duventru-huret and Stanley Duventru-huret are London-based dancers, choreographers, and instructors of Caribbean zouk; Ebonie Lee is a Brazilian zouk dancer and connoisseur currently living in Denver, USA.

Marién es una artista increíble. Ella es también profesora en el Departamento de Baile en la Universidad Sagrado Corazón, es folklorista, bailarina, música, es barrilera (es decir que toca el tambor), coreógrafa, cantante, y gerente de eventos culturales.
