New Delhi:

The weekend curfew has been lifted in Delhi, odd-even curbs for markets have been removed and restaurants and cinemas can reopen at 50 per cent capacity, the government said today, as Covid cases continued to drop in the capital.

Schools and colleges will remain shut for now.

The decision to ease curbs enforced during the Omicron surge was taken at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), in which the Delhi government and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal were present.

Delhi Restaurants Closed For Dine-In As Covid Cases Surge : DDMA

New Delhi:

Dining at restaurants has been banned in new Covid curbs in Delhi as the national capital scrambles to contain a frightening surge in new infections over the past few days.

However, restaurants in the national capital will be allowed home delivery and takeaways.

The new restrictions are the part of the Graded Response Action plan that has seen the city implementing a weekend curfew last week.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority had called on the meeting amid rise in the number of coronavirus cases and its variant Omicron. During the meeting, chaired by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and attended by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, ways to strictly enforce existing restrictions to check rising cases of the coronavirus and its Omicron variant were also discussed.

The city today reported 19,166 new Covid cases and the positivity rate was at 25 per cent. It also reported 17 deaths.

Amid Covid rise, weekend curfew imposed in Delhi, non-essential movement curbed

Delhi Weekend Curfew: In view of the Covid-19 case surge in the city, driven by Omicron, government offices will have to implement work from home for employees and private offices will operate at 50 per cent capacity on weekends.

To check the Covid-19 spread in Delhi, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has decided to impose a weekend curfew in the city. No non-essential movement will be allowed during the weekend curfew.

As per orders, government offices, barring essential services, in the city will have to implement work from home for employees and private offices will operate at 50 per cent capacity.

Buses and metro will run at full seating capacity to avoid crowding outside metro stations and at bus stops, Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia announced.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said Delhi has somehow gained control over the second wave of COVID-19 and the city will now start the process of lifting the lockdown gradually.

He, however, said the fight against the virus has not ended. "At a meeting of Delhi Disaster Management Authority on Friday, it was decided that the lockdown be lifted gradually. In the process, we have to take care of the lowest strata first ... daily wagers, labourers, migrant workers," he said.Every week, based on experts' and public opinion, the government will continue the unlock process, he said.

"After facing so many problems, we have gained control over the 2nd wave somehow. This doesn't mean the fight has ended. The situation is under control for now. In the last 24 hours, the positivity rate stood at around 1.5 per cent."

Rs 2,000 Fine For Not Wearing Mask In Delhi, Up From 500, To Tackle Covid

New Delhi:
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced a steep Rs 2,000 fine -- up from the current Rs 500 -- for those caught without masks, to help control the coronavirus surge that's in its third week. The Chief Minister also appealed to all political parties and social organisations to distribute masks at public places in Delhi.
The hard line by the government came after days of pleas. As the virus rampaged across a city weakened by sliding mercury and an envelope of smoke, Mr Kejriwal had repeatedly appealed to people with folded hands to wear masks and maintain safety norms.
But the mad rush of the festive season had prevailed, pushing the daily tally of fresh cases and fatalities to record highs each week since the beginning of November.

Over the last weeks, to grapple with the surge that had once crossed the 8,000 mark, the Centre has flown in para-medical personnel and increased the number of beds in hospitals.
At the press conference this afternoon, Mr Kejriwal said arrangements are being made for over 1,400 ICU beds, "including 663 in Delhi government hospitals and 750 at Centre-run facilities".
The number of non-ICU beds for Covid patients in private hospitals will be raised from 50 per cent to 60 per cent. The decision to reserve 80 per cent ICU beds in private hospitals for COVID-19 patients has been implemented starting today, he added.
On Wednesday evening, health ministry data showed that over the previous 24 hours, the national capital had logged 7,486 new coronavirus cases, taking the infection tally in the city to over 5 lakh. Data also showed that the number of fatalities recorded was 131 -- the highest single-day count in Delhi till date, pushing the number of deaths to 7,943.
Mr Kejriwal, who earlier ruled away a fresh phase of lockdown, has decided to shut markets that prove hotspots of coronavirus.
He has also ruled out the customary dip in the capital's water bodies during Chhat puja, saying he "can't let the people take a dip together, one infected person can infect the water, everybody".
