If you want your audience to engage with your content, you gotta meet them where they’re at 🤌🏼✨

I’ve talked so much about this idea when it comes to what platforms you should be on and what is the “best time” to post on social but the same idea applies to the type of content you share!

What is your audience coming on social media for? You know I gotta bring up the icons - this is a great example of a team that realized that their audience wasn’t coming to social media (Tiktok, specifically) to learn more about language or the benefits of being multilingual. They were coming to see a constant stream of sh*tposting 🤪

Now, I am not telling you to go full duolingo because, say it with me! 🗣️ just because it works for their brand doesn’t mean it will work for you 🗣️

What I am saying, though, is that we can all learn a valuable lesson from Duolingo. They quite literally make sales by posting videos on TikTok about a green owl who has a crush on Dua Lipa 😶

To wrap it all up with a pretty bow, understanding your audiences media consumption habits as a whole is so important to creating a strategy that hits 🤌🏼

Putting on my lab goggles because it’s time to talk about the scientific method (yep, you read that right) 👩🏼‍🔬

Just like in science, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to social media. The name of the game is being open to constantly learning. Learning new things about your audience, about the platform, about marketing in general. And then, you use that knowledge to create hypotheses about what kind of content will hit the spot for your clients 🤌🏼

And, just like they taught us in 6th grade science, you can analyze your data from your experiments to get even closer to your desired outcome next time 🧪

Being a successful social media marketer doesn’t mean every single idea you have HITS. It doesn’t mean you are so creative that every single thing you come up with changes the game (I hate to say it but that would be humanly impossible) It is all about being able to use research to make educated hypotheses, testing those out, and using data to get you closer to your desired outcome (content that your audience loves!)

A couple of days ago, I was scrolling on Instagram and came across a video about a product that immediately hooked me. It was a *need*. I went to the link in the company’s bio with the intent to immediately press “add to cart” and was greeted by chaos. 😵‍💫 I spent 5 minutes looking for the product, couldn’t find it, and gave up and moved onto the next post on my feed.

The moral of that story? Social media can only do so much for you. In the case of this company, their social post had me interested enough to exit the Instagram app and go to their website, but because there was no landing page and their website was extremely difficult to navigate, they lost me. 🙃

No matter how *great* your social content is, it can’t do its job if the rest of your funnel isn’t functioning how it should be. 🖥️

So, this is your sign to take time to audit your entire marketing funnel and create a seamless, streamlined experience so that the time and effort you put into your social media content can pay off for you (because, believe me, I know creating fire content isn’t easy 😉)

One of my all-time favorite ways to create a sense of belonging for your community is through inside jokes? The key to these inside jokes, though, is that anyone can be in on them 👀

I was listening to Patreon episode yesterday and it got me thinking about the power of inside jokes. Sure, I was a little lost when I first started listening to the podcast a couple months ago, but now I feel SO connected to them and every single other toaster because of the inside jokes and stories they have given all of us to bond and connect over!!

Inside jokes give your audience a way to feel connected to you AND to each other and that’s where real community starts to form 🫶🏼🫶🏼

I don’t know about you, but I can spot an AI-written caption from a mile away 🫣

AI is such a new tool that is exciting and scary at the same time. I can confidently say that I use AI often in my business, but it is so important to pick and choose WHAT you use it for and HOW you use it 👀

Typing a 2 sentence description of a photo into Chat GPT and asking if for a caption simply isn’t going to cut it. You will lose one of your most important assets that draws your community to you - your brand voice and tone!! And, I’m telling you, that is something you realllyyyy can’t afford to lose.

BUT, I am not saying to throw AI away all together. AI can be such a time saver for a number of things in your business (& even with writing captions, if you use it right) Just be sure that when you are using AI, you give it what it needs to succeed — your brand story, brand voice, tone, guidelines… the list goes on. Anything you would need to give someone you would hire to write your captions, you should be giving to Chat GPT too 👀 (& then alter them some more after AI writes them for you)

We know how important UGC is (especially in 2023), but how do you actually encourage your community to share it? 🧐

User-generated content is so important in establishing trust and authenticity as a brand, but it can be an uphill battle trying to get your community to take the bait and start sharing it, but there are a couple of things you can do to encourage it! Let’s break it down:

🌸 Create a branded # : a branded hashtag is a great way to make it SUPER easy for your community to share UGC (& a great way to gather all of your UGC in one place!)

🪩 Offer a reward: Sometimes, an incentive is just what you need to kickstart your community into the UGC game! Running a UGC contest/giveaway, sharing a discount, or offering some other reward is a great way to incentivize UGC creation.

📱 Feature UGC on your site or socials: Make your community feel special and valued by featuring their content (with permission, of course) on your socials and website. This is also a great way to subtly remind your community about your branded # and entice them to share their own content!

✨ Use prompts: Sometimes, all your community needs is some guidance! Creating a prompt or specific UGC campaign makes it easier for your community to create (& takes away the paralysis of choice!)

If there’s one thing about me, I’m gonna be nurturing 🤠

This post was inspired by a conversation I had in the comments of my last reel with .marketing all about how creating content with your current community in mind is a win-win 👏🏼

Believe me, i GET it. It can be tempting to be focused on reaching the next milestone, gaining the next follower, and keeping those insights in the green. And sometimes, it feels like the only way to do that is to create the next viral reel or a meme that (while it may not be *superrrr* on brand) you know it has the potential to go viral if it hits the right person’s feed. But I am here to tell you that, as someone who has managed dozens (and dozens and dozens…) of business’s social media pages, the recipe for sustainable growth is creating content for your current community FIRST.

I’m not afraid to admit that my social media strategy used to suck 🫣🫣

And here’s why: I was being wishy-washy about who I was talking to and what I wanted to say to them. In other words, I wasn’t clear on my target audience or core message of my business.

Now, these really aren’t social media issues at their core. I wasn’t using the wrong hashtags or keywords or posting at the wrong time. These are bigger issues in my business that were bleeding into my social media strategy. I jumped in a littleeee too fast to focusing on social and skipped the (very important) steps of gaining brand clarity.

If your social media strategy isn’t working for you, yes, of course, it COULD be your strategy itself, but consider that it might be something a little bit deeper.

And *definitely* don’t try to hire a social media manager to answer the “who”, “what”, and “why” questions for you - our job is to use that information to connect you with your audience and get you in front of them, not to tell you the answers to those questions!

Responding to your DM’s is not a race 👀

DM’s are my #1 favorite thing to receive on my account and client accounts! They are where the realll convos are happening, leads are coming out of the woodwork, and connection is thriving. As such a valuable spot for community building, your DM’s should be treated with care!!

Say it with me: 🗣️ I will not respond to every DM immediately after opening it 🗣️

The mark as unread feature exists for a reason, so if you open up a DM and don’t feel prepared or able to give a well thought out, purposeful, and attentive response, mark her as unread and come back later!

Now, this isn’t me telling you to leave DM’s sitting there for days, but this IS me telling you to wait until you finish your current task, get out of the car, or get back from dinner to respond so you can give your DM’s the attention they deserve 🫶🏼

I don’t expect every single post to get 5 star engagement 👀 let’s talk about why

Enter: the sales funnel 🤌🏼 If you haven’t heard of her, the sales funnel is the process that your prospective clients or customers go through to become a customer. All of your marketing efforts should help move your prospects through the funnel - including social media 📱 Your social strategy should be built with your unique sales funnel in mind (yes, the funnel is a little different for every business!) and each piece of content should be targeted towards a specific stage of the funnel.

But, it is a funnel, meaning it gets smaller the more you move down! That means that there are less and less people as you move to the bottom of your sales funnel. SO, a post that speaks to people in the intent stage will have a smaller audience than a post that speaks to your people in the awareness stage! 🌸

So, how do you stop from being discouraged when your lower sales funnel posts don’t get great engagement? You find different measures of success! For people who are closer to that purchase stage, they might be less likely to comment or share your post but more likely to DM you or tap the link in your bio. Or maybe they filled out an inquiry form on your site and said they found you through your Instagram post (the best feeling 🤌🏼)

It’s all about understanding your sales funnel, knowing the purpose of every post, and evaluating accordingly! Oh, and don’t beat yourself up (ever) about numbers. At the end of the day, your data is there to help and guide you, not hurt you 🫶🏼

We all know that outbound engagement, while it is SO important, can be time consuming, so I am all for any way to make connecting with my target audience easier (& following hashtags is a great way to do that)!!

When you follow a hashtag on Instagram, you’ll see it’s photos and videos appear in your feed. That means that even if you don’t follow someone, their content can appear in your feed. Let’s talk about why this rocks:

Instagram has so many features that you can use to help nurture and grow your community and close friends is one of my all-time favorites!

I talked about this a bit in my post last week about nurturing your community, but I wanted to dive in a bit deeper and talk about specific ways to use your close friend’s story strategically!

Your close friend’s story should feel like an exclusive club for your most engaged community members. Not every single follower will want to be a part of it (& that’s a good thing!), so it will be a concentrated spot where you can reach the people who love you and your brand the most and are the most engaged with you on social.

SO, when creating content for close friends, I want you to think about these questions:

✨ How can you make your close friend’s feel exclusive?

🪩 How can you make your close friend’s feel valued and like an important part of your business?

🌸 What content can you provide that will incentivise them to join and stay engaged in your close friend’s story?

Let’s settle this once and for all - there is no way to “hack” the algorithm or some secret recipe to social media that will make you go viral every time you post

If that was the case, social media managers everywhere would be out of a job and everyone would have 500,000 followers on all of their accounts. But you know what they say… if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is (& this “advice” 100% is ☕️)

I know it can be tempting to try the new “thing” that someone on your reels explore page told you would increase your reach by 1000x in 24 hours (I’m here to tell you, it won’t), but you are wasting your energy chasing the next hot tip and won’t see any real results by relying on these “hacks” 👀

Instead of focusing on things that don’t have any impact like hidden keywords in reels or posting at 5am on Monday because it’s the “best” time, try focusing on a sustainable strategy that puts your audience first and priorities content that they will resonate with and want to save, engage with, and share with their friends. THAT is where the real results start to come!

This is your reminder not to neglect your current community in your effort to build a larger one…

What you do to nurture your social media community is just as (if not more 👀) important as what you do to grow your community! We all know what they say - it’s easier to get a repeat customer than a new customer - and nurturing your social media community is a major way to ensure your customers that you worked so hard to get STAY your customers!

Nurturing your community is about making them feel seen, heard, and valued and should be a major part of your social media strategy. A community that isn’t nurtured is one that won’t last!

If you want a strong community around your brand on social media, the #1 thing you need is patience…

I have had so many experiences where people come to me in a panic, expecting that hiring a social media manager for 3,4,5 months will “fix” their business and leave them with hundreds of new customers.

But let’s really think about it… building a community on social media is really no different than forming friendships IRL, and you wouldn’t expect someone you just met to become your bestie immediately, would you?

Of course not! We know that friendships take time to develop and involve trust and connection. They are a give and take and, at their best, are never one-sided.

The EXACT same thing can be said for your community on social media. Unless you’re a fan of empty followers that don’t feel connected to your brand (& will probably never purchase…), you have to shift your perspective to focus on how you can connect with your audience rather than how you can make them buy from you!

It’s been a while since we did a over here and I thought that my new city deserved some love, so today I made over ‘s Instagram!

Adopted Dog is the only craft brewery in Lafayette and is, as you would expect, dog friendly! They have craft beer, delicious food, and a family and dog friendly patio for customers to enjoy 🐾🍻

With this makeover, I wanted to showcase the energy of the brewery through their social media feed and highlight the guests of honor, the pups, that are so pivotal to their brand!

One year ago today, I officially opened up my books to social media management clients and the past year has been so much more amazing than I could’ve ever imagined!!

I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many amazing businesses from all around the United States - and a big handful from right here at home ⚜️ I have learned and grown so much right alongside my clients and have gotten to push myself and my creativity more than I ever have before.

This might be a hot take…

Just like everything in marketing, we have to consider ethics when we are filtering and “blocking” comments and messages as a business. The last thing we want is to make our community feel like they aren’t heard, but we— as business owners— also don’t deserve to scroll through and see comments about things completely unrelated to our business (like our weight, appearance, s*x, etc)

So, I say there is no harm in utilizing Instagram’s hidden words features - 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺! This feature can be amazing for blocking hateful and offensive comments and messages as well as spam, but just remember to be purposeful and careful when blocking specific words of your choosing — think about your community first, as always!!

UGC has been on the rise for a while but is growing more and more in popularity and is becoming a huge part of many marketers social media strategies - and for good reason! Here is why UGC is so powerful:

To put it simply, UGC offers two things: authenticity and trust! Consumers are craving authenticity more and more and are more likely to purchase when they don’t feel like they’re being sold to. UGC feels like a friend recommending you their new favorite product and consumers are LOVING it!
