A detachment of soldiers took positions and secured the streets on Lagos Island, Lagos State, on Monday, following unrest in the market.

According to reports, some thugs attacked the market to vandalise shops and rob people leaving some injured.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, debunked the report, saying that nobody was robbed, neither were shops vandalised.

Stating that the attack was not from political thugs, Hundeyin noted that the police had intervened in the unrest.

Kogi politician arrested with N326m and $610,500 cash after allegedly ste@ling N1.4billion from a bank

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the Kogi State House of Assembly seat, Ismaila Yusuf Atumeyi, with N326 million and $140,500 cash.

Atumeyi, who is seeking to represent Ankpa 11 Constituency in the State Assembly, was arrested on Sunday, October 30, 2022 alongside one Joshua Dominic, an alleged serial fr@udster.

EFCC’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren in a statement said they were arrested in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, Gwarinpa in Abuja.

According to Uwujaren, Femi supplied the inside information that facilitated the att@ck on a bank by the syndicate.

“He (Femi) was picked up Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lagos. Following his arrest, a search was conducted on his home in Morgan Estate, Ojodu where a total of $470,000 USD was recovered.

The arrest of the suspects followed months of investigation into the hacking of one of the commercial banks by a syndicate of fr@udsters who pulled off a heist of N1.4billion.

The syndicate allegedly moved N887 million into the account of Fav Oil and Gas limited, from where the monies were paid to several Bureau de Change operators and some auto dealers for exchange into United States Dollars and purchase of high-end cars,” he said.

The EFCC added that Dominic, who has severally been arrested for fr@ud, allegedly helped Atumeyi perfect the hacking plan through Abdumalik.

“Dominic, a self-styled investment expert and managing director of Brisk Capital Limited was arrested in May 2021 by the Special Fr@ud Unit of the Nigeria Police for alleged N2billion investment scm. He allegedly defr@uded over 500 persons in a phony investment scheme.

Two Range Rover Luxury SUVs were also recovered from the two suspects arrested in Abuja. They will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” he added.

Governor Samuel Ortom and a group of elder statesmen in Benue, Minda Leaders of Thoughts, have supposedly withdrawn their support for Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar over alleged hate speech and profiling of Benue people.

This came after Atiku sent a message of sympathy to Gbeji community in Ukum Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State, after attacks that left about 39 people, including two policemen, dead and many hospitalized.

He said in the message;

“I’m saddened by the sustained clashes between farmers and herders that led to the loss of lives, including those of police officers in Gbeji community, Ukum LGA of Benue State.

“When our people are well integrated into communities where they live, work, pay taxes and raise their children, they’d be obligated to reciprocate the love and acceptance. My deepest condolences to the families that may have lost a loved one and to the people and government of Benue State.”

However leaders of Gbeji community, accused the presidential candidate of being insenstive by claiming it was just a farmers and herders’ clash.

They stated that what happened in Gbeji last Wednesday, 19th October, 2022, was an unprovoked attack by armed Fulani militia.

The statement read;

“We members of the Gbeji community are disappointed with the statement by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar that there was farmers and herders’ clash in Gbeji which claimed lives including those of policemen.

“What happened in Gbeji last Wednesday, 19th October, 2022, was an unprovoked attack by armed Fulani militia, on the people around 6am.

“For Alhaji Atiku to talk about integration does not arise in Gbeji as the attackers do not live among us. After the unprovoked attack many people visit us including Senator Gabriel Suswam and other members of the National and State Assemblies who also visited the mortuary and saw some of the bodies of those killed.

Court orders FG to return Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya and pay him N500m as damages for his illegal extradition

Justice E.N Anyadike of a Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, today October 26, ordered the Federal Government to return the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya from where he was extradited and pay him the sum of N500 million as damages following his illegal abduction and human rights abuse from Kenya.

Recall that Kanu was extradited from Kenya to Nigeria on June 19, 2021.

The Court presided by Justice E . N Anyadike, insisted that the extradition of Kanu from Kenya without recourse to the legal process was a flagrant abuse of his fundamental human rights.

Kanu, through his counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had approached the court challenging his extradition from Kenya on June 19, 2022. Ejimakor told the court that the suit is sui generis (of a special class) and was primarily aimed at redressing the infamous unlawful expulsion or extraordinary rendition of Kanu, which is a clear violation of his fundamental rights under Article 12(4) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, as well as Chapter IV of the Nigerian Constitution.

He argued that the federal government should be required to show the legal document or authority that served as the foundation for his “abduction or extraordinary rendition.” Among the several reliefs sought, Kanu through his counsel asked the court for “an order mandating and compelling the respondents to pay the sum of N25,000,000,000.00 (Twenty-Five Billion Naira) to the applicant, being monetary damages claimed by the applicant against the respondents jointly and severally for the physical, mental, emotional, psychological, property and other damages suffered by the applicant as a result of the infringements of applicant’s fundamental rights by the respondents”.

Delivering a ruling on the suit, the presiding judge held that the extradition of Kanu from Kenya without recourse to the legal process was a flagrant abuse of his fundamental human rights. She also held that the respondent failed to disprove the claims of the applicant that he was arrested, blindfolded, tortured

Adidas has ended its partnership with Kanye West after he made a series of antisemitic remarks and embraced a slogan associated with white supremacists that earned him widespread condemnation.

The German sportswear giant said on Tuesday, October 25, that it "does not tolerate antisemitism" after the rapper was suspended from Instagram and Twitter over offensive posts.

Adidas added that recent comments and actions from Kanye West had been "unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness".

The company said it would take a "short-term" hit of €250m (£217m) to its income for this year after deciding to stop the brand’s business with immediate effect.

It is to end production for products under West’s Yeezy brand and stop all payments to the rapper and his companies.

In 2020, the partnership brought in nearly $1.7bn in revenue for Adidas, according to Bloomberg, and was due to expire in 2026.

Adidas put the deal up for review after West’s controversial Paris show earlier this month, where models walked the catwalk wearing "White Lives Matter" shirts.

Adidas’s move comes after Balenciaga, Gap and JPMorgan Chase all cut ties with West.

Kanye recently claimed that Adidas could not drop him, despite his comments prompting calls for a boycott.

Panic as petrol shortage emerges in Lagos

There was panic, yesterday, as petrol shortage, characterised by long queues started to emerge in Lagos.

It also indicated that those with commercial stocks increased their prices, ranging between N200 and N250 per litre, depending on location.

The National Operations Controller, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, who confirmed the development in a telephone interview with , attributed it to unsteady supply in the past few days.

He said as a result of the unsteady supply, depots prices have risen to between N175 and N180 per litre in Lagos and its environs.

According to him, “The situation has culminated in higher prices at the depots. Our members, who find it difficult to get the product, pay between N175 – N185 per litre. Consequently, we are compelled to sell at higher prices in order to cover cost.”

However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited did not provide comments.

But recently the company had urged consumers not to panic in Abuja as it was working to restore stable supply.

It had stated: “The current queue situation in some parts of Abuja and its environs is as a result of delays in arrival of fuel trucks. This is happening as a result of heavy flooding that has submerged parts of the highway passing through Lokoja, Kogi State and also an incidence of a failed road section around Badegi-Agaie highway in Niger State.

“Consequently, vehicles, especially fuel tankers, are finding alternative roads to get to their intended destinations”.

LAGOS ISSUES FRESH UPDATE FOR RESIDENTS OF IKOYI, LEKKI, VICTORIA ISLAND, OTHERS

Lagos State Government on Monday issued a fresh update to all waterfront residents of highbrow Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island and coastal areas of Epe and Badagry to be wary of backflow due to the high tide in the Lagos Lagoon.

A statement signed by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, explained that the latest advisory had become necessary due to the high tide of the Lagos Lagoon.

Bello stressed that the high tide of the Lagoon has made it difficult for storm run-off from the various channels to discharge effectively into the lagoon which may cause a stagnation into the streets and major roads until the level of the lagoon subsides to allow for a discharge of the channels.
