Security forces arrest 10 youth including female journalist in Kapoeta

Some of the youth arrested and tortured allegedly by the NS in Kapoeta - Courtesy

At least ten members of the Taposa Community Association, including a female journalist, have been arrested by security personnel in Kapoeta town following an elections dispute.

This is according to Lokuru Rex, the Toposa Community Association Secretary.

Lokuru says the disagreement emerged after Governor Louis Lobong allegedly reinstated his favorite candidate, the former community chairman to continue leading.

He added that the members rejected Lobong’s choice who was impeached and removed from the office by the association.

Lokuru says among the arrested this morning is Roselyne Nakopit Lotyam, a female Journalist working for Singaita FM radio was also arrested.

The community leader explained that, the journalist was arrested on Wednesday, while covering the arrival of the legitimate acting Chairperson of the Toposa Community Association at the airstrip.

He says the police and national security went on rampage beating Boda Boda riders who were protesting against the decision.

“Two days ago, the state authorities reinstated the former chairperson back to the leadership of the association which was against the will of the youth in Kapoeta,” said Lokuru.

“Some of them are under detention and they are arresting more youth in the town. They are saying the youth are against the government which is not true because it’s not a political association.

“Those arrested include, Marten Oyeh, the acting chairperson, and the information secretary, Francis Oriam, Adviser Amose Louthi, and Marten Loupoh.”

The State authorities are yet to comment on the arbitrary arrest.

Dr. Francis Maxing Deng's farewell to the Late Audit Ajungdit.

Farewell to our beloved wudit Ajingdit: A Legend of An African Spiritual Culture

By Dr. Francis Mading Deng

It is with profound sorrow that I have just learned of the tragic passing away of the Great Spiritual Leader, Ajingdit Deng Cyerdit from the Twich of Adiang. Three years ago. I went with my brother and friend, Bona Malwal Madut Ring, to Turalei and on to his village at Molbang, to attend the burial of his tragically assassinated brother, Paramount Chief Wundit Madut Ring of Twich Mayardit. That was when I had the great honor and pleasure of accompanying Bona Malwal on a visit to the Great Spiritual Leader in his home at Mathing. When Bona first informed me of the plan for the visit, the idea itself was an intriguing surprise and curiosity.

I had of course heard of the awesome spiritual powers of Ajingdit’s grandfather, the Prophet Cyerdit, whose prophetic name means ‘The Great Crescent’. Cyerdit’s spiritual leadership was renowned throughout Dinkaland. Ajingdit appeared in his colorful garbs, wearing a distinctive hat, with an array of beads and shells hanging on his neck as insignia of his status, and holding a decorated spear, a symbol of his spiritual power. The manner in which we were received under a huge shrine-like tree that seemed uniquely sculptured by nature, the spiritually charged atmosphere surrounding the revered leader, and the elaborate rituals of blessing accorded us in his religiously ornamented ‘Hut’, left me in great awe about our spiritual traditions and values that have been severely undermined by modernity. Through a practice that long predated the COVID restrictions, Spiritual Leaders do not shake hands, but greet by holding up open hands toward the visitors. I also understood from childhood that spitual leaders must not be awaken from sleep. This is a dogma whose rationale was never explained, except, perhaps, because their sleep is a precious commodity that must not be interrupted, as they usually spend sleepless nights watching over the spiritual wellbeing of their people..

We had also visited another Spiritual Leader, Aguek Maleng Tor in his home at Malual Tor village of Amuol section of Twich, a much younger person, who had adapted to the dictates of the modern world, but who had also profoundly impressed me. To begin with, I deeply admired Bona Malwal’s recognition and high regard for these Spiritual Leaders, which contributed immensely to my own deference for them. The fact that they both said they had heard of me and spoke so highly of Ngok Dinka Leaders in my own family was very humbling to me. It was, however, not entirely surprising, since there has been intermarriage between our respective families. Mayar Cyerdit, the son of the Prophet, was married to our sister, Nyannyop, the spectacular ceremony which I witnessed as a child. Mayar had become more of a political figure than a mere spiritual leader and was arrested and detained in Wau town during the first civil war, when Bona Maluwal, then a senior government official in Wau, offered him discrete protection in his house.

Prophets and religious leaders played a prominent role in our people’s resistance to colonial invasion and domination. Among the well known names of the many spiritual liberation leaders from virtually all the communities of South Sudan ware Arienhdit of the Aweil Dinka and Ngundeng, from the Nuer, whose legacy has lingered on and creeped into the politics of today’s South Sudan. As children, we danced to the lyrics of a song about Arienhdit’s heroic resistance to colonial rule, which included the words:

I am locked up in jail,
I am locked up in jail;
O Kwol Amet, (another leader)
Tighten your hold on the land,
I am locked up in jail.

That these sentiments found their way into dancing lyrics indicated the popular legitimacy of their leadership in the liberation struggle. Ajingdit himself is said to have played an important role in the struggle for freedom by offering spiritual support and guidance to the troops. In my forthcoming edited volume, ‘Warriors from Abyei in the Liberation of South Sudan,’ Gen. Pieng Deng Kwol provides accounts of spiritual leaders offering blessings to soldiers as they prepared to go into battle, often generating tensions between the Christians and adherents of traditional belief systems among the soldiers.

When we left Ajingdit, I had no doubt that I had just had a deeply moving experience that added a great deal to my already high regard for the indigenous cultural and spiritual traditions of our people. I felt very grateful to Bona Malwal for having had the wisdom to veer us into honoring our traditional spiritual leaders. My deep appreciation also goes to President Salva Kiir Mayardit for the personal attention which I later understood he gave to Ajingdit’s medical treatment and provided for related needs, which demonstrates his wider respect for our people’s cultural, spiritual and moral values.

I pray and trust that the passing of this Great Spiritual Leader will not in any way interrupt the continuity of the Sacred Tradition, which should be preserved and passed on to His Successor to be designated in accordance with the well established Code of Succession that had brought him to the helm of Spiritual Leadership in his Twich Mayardit and wider Dinka Community.

My profound condolences go to his family, Twich Mayardit Community, the People of Warrap State, and the entire nation of South Sudan, for whom he was a Spiritual Father.

May the Almighty God compensate Ajingdit’s Soul with Eternal Life of Peace that this world often denies.

Francis Mading Deng

Government orders public institutions to ban unvaccinated people access their offices.

The task force also directed higher learning institutions to stop unvaccinated students and staff from campuses unless they produce negative test results within 72 hours.

This came as the country is witnessing a surge in cases of the coronavirus.

South Sudan reported 410 new cases in the last three days.

This raises South Sudan’s cumulative tally to 13,459. While the number of fatalities due to the virus remains at 133 as there was no new death registered.

Abdulbagi directed event organizers to obtain permission before any function took place.

“Any person who doesn’t take a vaccine must take it, and whoever is not vaccinated will not come to the government institutions from now,” the chairman of national task force on covid-19 said.

One of the worst things you can do to your own future self is to have a degree, diploma or certificate that you didn't earn. Earning it means your head is loaded with knowledge and your hands are loaded with skill. That's what it means to earn your weight in gold.

There has been an outbreak of cheating across the spectrum, where people pay others to write exams for them. Some pay to have their dissertation written for them. So, we end up with people who have suitcases full of documentation of qualifications, but an empty head.

People post adverts and invite people who want to have school assignments done for them for a fee. Then they get offended when certain employers don't have respect for their fake qualifications? If you didn't do the school work and projects yourself, your qualifications are fake. I've been in workplaces where bosses promoted workers with less academic/vocational qualifications than certain employees who had higher qualifications. This was because the employers realised that a qualification on paper, and an empty head isn't worthy of promotion. When you know you know.

Employers don't worship qualifications on paper. They are impressed by a person who demonstrates leadership, efficiency, analytical skills, problem solving skills, solutions oriented and full of initiative to get results at the end of the day. They'd rather hire or promote someone with less paperwork and more personality than otherwise.

So, before we hurry to get a fake certificate, let's get it right first, that an employer is looking for more than a document to prove your worth. They're looking for personality that has what it takes to have the job done. Results are not obtained by paperwork. They are produced by personal skill sets. Our certificates should only serve as proof that we are worth our weight in gold.

When you pay someone to do your school work for you, just know that knowledge is not transferable that way. You remain an ignorant person with a fake certificate. You'll have cheated your whole future by paying someone to aquire knowledge for you, it means you deprived yourself of a chance to know. Now you're pretending to be who you're not and it shows. You can't deliver the results you're being paid to deliver. Sooner or later, it will catch up with you and it won't be worth it.

News in Brazil. Ronaldo has just bought El Cruzeiro, the club where he made his debut and the one that gave him a shot to go to Europe. In 1992, Cruzeiro bought Ronaldo from Sao Cristovao for $ 25,000. He played there between +993 and 1994 where he managed to score 56goals in 58 games at the age of 18. Then they sold him to PSV for 6 million

Today, 27 years later Cruzeiro is in Division 2 and came close to relegation. He bought the club for $70 million. His reasoning was this:

"I owe a lot to this club, I want to return it to where it deserves to be."

LAFON COUNTY PEACE DIALOGUE.

Enough is enough: Lohutok and Ibahure people of Lafon County in Eastern Equatoria state unanimously agree to end conflict.

16th December, 2021 (Buhei).... The two Villages of Lohutok and Ibahure in Lafon County have vowed not to return to conflict, which has led to loss of lives and property and had soiled their relationship for years.

Delegates from the two arch rivals made their declaration at a Peace Dialogue held in Buhei, an area separating the two villages.

Representatives from other sections of the Lopit Community are attending the event, seen as crucial in ending the simmering conflict in the area.

The Peace Dialogue is facilitated by the Lafon County government and South Sudan Council of Churches, and funded by Pax Organization.

In attendance was the Commissioner of Lafon County, Hon. Magisto Ukach. He calls on the Lopit Community to embrace peace to chart a way forward for the County policies. He also, challenged the communities of Tenet, Otuho of Coming Village and the Pari to prioritize peace as did the Lopit for a peaceful Lafon County. He recommended the South Sudan Council of Churches and funding organization for their tremendous support for the people of Lafon County.

Addressing the Peace delegates Eastern Equatoria Governor Louis Lobong Lojore appealed to Ibahure and Lohutok to denounce conflict and co-exist peacefully with one another.

Lobong says absence of peace in the area has undermined people's ability to engage in productive activities, as most of their time has been consumed by the tedious activities of staying day and night in the defensive positions.

The delegates have agreed to compensate the people who were killed on both sides of the conflict. This compensation was limited to the recent cases, to avoid opening up the older cases, which might jeopardize the peace.

The conflict had denied the people of Ibahure easy travel to the State capital, Torit. While the people of Lohutok had been denied access to Imehejek, which is the County Headquarters, compelling Primary School candidates to travel long distance to sit for their final examinations in Hiyala Payam of Torit County every year.

The delegates called on Politicians and intellectuals from the two Villages to listen to the voice of reason and support the peace efforts in the area.

"My dear teachers, please remain firm, for you got our highest respect. I encourage you to continue your good work. On our side, we will continue to do what we can to support your efforts". Lobong asserted.

Lobong called on the National Government to come up with policies that encourage the students to aspire more for technical specializations and aspire less for political positions.

The Governor said the teacher's perseverance, ingenuity, and compassion make Eastern Equatoria State a better place for education.

The Secretary General of the National Examinations Council, Simon Nyok said the success of the children of Eastern Equatoria in the recently released results of Secondary School examinations does not come out of blue, but through a shared commitment of all stakeholders.

It is worth noting that Eastern Equatoria State was the best performing State in the recently announced results of the South Sudan Certificate of Secondary Education

Eastern Equatoria Minister for General Education and Instruction Sammy Aperengole, thanks the dedicated educators for moulding the students in a proper manner.

There are 29 operational Secondary Schools in the whole of Eastern Equatoria State.

GOVERNMENT URGE TO REMOVE POCKETS.

A number of public talks suggest that pockets in traffic police uniforms be removed in the next round of production.

Some of the angry residents of Juba, especially drivers, and motorcyclists are askeing the government to consider removing pockets in Traffic police uniforms to avoid unnecessary collections of money from the public.

This came as a result of high demand of money by the traffic police placed along the streets of Juba. They normally asked for "AGAMOYO" from us said a taxi driver who spoke to The City News reporter.

So, the drivers Union consider removing the pockets as the only solution to discourage calls for AGAMOYO by the traffic police.

Please stay tune for more news from The City News media.
