The Brihadeeswarar temple contains more than 100 underground passages to various places. The underground channels also contain some secret paths that lead to various places like the Palace of RajaRaja Chola and also to other important destinations.

The underground transits end at different temples and also to various places in and around Tanjore. Most of the underground passages were sealed, and if people choose the wrong passage, there are possibilities that the path might lead to mazed unexitable zones. It is widely known that this was a trap for the safety of RajaRaja Chola kingdom.

Underground Passages of Thanjavur (Tanjore): The underground passage is built for Sages, Kings, Queens who roamed through various temples using underground routes conveniently.

The routes were very useful to reach temples during auspicious days like Thaipusam (தமிழர் திருவிழா), Deepawali (दीपावली), Makar Sankranti (मकर संक्रांति), Maha Shivratri (महा शिवरात्रि), and other such pious Hindu festivals.

Few passages were interconnected to be used for the free flow of fresh air running through lush green vegetation filled with oxygen for the healthy breathing of the occupants roaming through the underground transits of the Thanjavur (Tanjore) temple.

There was a separate elevated platform constructed for RajaRaja Chola so that he could conveniently perform the abhishek of the large Shiv Ling present in Garbhagriha.

Other passages were leading to doorways of tunnels that were sources of water channelized from the fresh river water.

Shaka Samvat beginning from 78 BCE, Vikram Samvat in 57 BCE

You must have heard about Shaka Samvat and Vikram Samvat. Do you know difference between the Shaka Samvat and the Vikram Samvat?

Shaka Samvat is India's national calendar. This Samvat was started 78 BCE whereas Vikram Samvat started in 57 BCE. In both these Samvat, the complete calculation of time is done on the basis of the Moon.

In the same way, the names of months of Shaka and Vikram Samvat are the same, and both the Samvat also have Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha.

But the difference is only in the beginning of the month. The new month starts in the Vikram Samvat with the Krishna Paksha which comes after the full moon, whereas the new month begins in the Shaka Samvat with the Shukla Paksha which comes after the new moon.

That is why there is a difference in the dates of the beginning of these Samvat. Pratipada (First day) of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra in the Shaka Samvat is the first date of the month, while it is the sixteenth date of Vikram Samvat.

which is the oldest operational calender in Bharat?

Its saptarshi samvat. This is the oldest operational calendar as per my knowledge.
We are in year 5097.

Saptarshi is an ancient form of India which starts from 3076 BCE. By the time of Mahabharata, this Samvat was used. Later, it gradually became oblivious.
There was a time when the Saptarishi-Sankta was about to reach the verge of extinction, was saved. The credit for saving this is to Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. It is noteworthy that in the Kashmir, the Saptarshi Samvat is called 'Prokhovic Samvat' and 'Shastra Samvat' in Himachal Pradesh.
