Mwansabombwe district has started the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) exercise and targets to spray over 14,700 habitable structures.

Public Health Officer Nyambe Nyambe disclosed the development at the launch of the IRS exercise held in Kasao village in Mwansabombwe

Mr. Nyambe said 40 spray operators have been trained to conduct the IRS exercise in the district and have already been deployed in the community.

“This year, we have trained 40 spray operators that we are going to use for our IRS exercise. We are targeting a total number of 14, 783 structures,” Mr. Nyambe said.

He said the programme is one of the interventions aimed at reducing the malaria disease burden in the district.

Mr. Nyambe said malaria still remains one of the disease burdens in the district which requires concerted efforts to reduce the burden.

He thanked the supporting partners for the logistical support to implement the programme early before the onset of the rain season.

Mr. Nyambe appealed to the house owners to allow the spray operators to spray their structures to eliminate the mosquitos which bring about malaria.

“Our call to house owners is lets welcome the spray operators in our homes so that our homes can be protected against malaria,” he appealed.

He said unlike in the past when the programme was implemented in the rain season, this time the exercise will be implemented in the dry season hence making it easier for the house holders to take
their household items outside.

And speaking when he launched the exercise, District Commissioner Ivo Mpasa encouraged members of the community to comply with the spray operators.

Mr. Mpasa said government has a number of interventions to eliminate malaria adding IRS is one such intervention.

He said the President of the republic of Zambia wants to ensure that a life of a person including that of the unborn child is well protected.

The DC also cautioned the spray operators to be humble as they carry out the exercise in the communities so that the exercise can be a success.

“I want to caution the spray operators to reduce themselves to the level of the local people and humbly engage the householders to have their structures sprayed,” Mr. Mpasa cautioned.

Meanwhile, village headman Kasao called on his subjects to welcome the spray operators in their homes and have their structures sprayed.

Mwansabombwe District Agriculture Coordinator Rueben Chandwa has appealed to civil servants in the district to apply for Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility (SAFF) loans.

Mr. Chandwa made the call during a District Food Security Committee meeting held at Community Development Office.

He said the SAFF loans are affordable but expressed worry to note that very few civil servants have so far applied for the loans in the district

Mr. Chandwa said most successful people at one point obtained a loan for them to excel hence the call for civil servants to obtain the loans.

“There is no individual who has excelled without a loan. Most successful individuals have obtained loans before,” Mr. Chandwa advised.

He said the civil servants can perform better if they venture into agriculture because they already have knowledge on good agriculture practices.

Mr. Chandwa however explained that those who will access the SAFF loans will be required to invest within the district and not in other districts.

“You should have land within the district you are working from. You cannot get a loan and invest in another district. We need to monitor your fields,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Assistant Community Development Officer Doris Chibwe disclosed that government has started delivery of the farming inputs under the Food Security Pack (FSP) in the department of community development.

Ms. Chibwe said so far, her office has received a total of 3,034 D-compound fertilizer allocated to the district for the 2025 -2026 farming season.

She said the district targets a total of 1,517 vulnerable but viable people to benefit from the farming inputs in 13 Community Welfare Assistance Committees (CWACs) in the district.

“The district will target a total number of 1,517 beneficiaries who should benefit for three consecutive rainfed farming seasons as per new guidelines,” Ms. Chibwe said.

Ms. Chibwe said the distribution of the inputs to the farmers will be done using the Food Security Pack Management of Information System (FSPMIS)

Mununshi ward councilor Ngosa Milambo has thanked UNICEF and KFW for the installation of a borehole at Chinyanta secondary school in Mwansabombwe district.

Speaking when a team from UNICEF visited the school, Mr. Milambo said both the school and the surrounding community are now accessing clean and safe water which has resulted in the reduction of waterborne diseases.

He said the installation of the borehole is a dream come true not only for the school and the health centre but also the surrounding community.

Mr. Milambo said members of the community are no longer walking long distances in search of water and that accessing clean water has resulted in the reduction of waterborne diseases.

“We have seen a reduction in water related diseases from the time members of the community started accessing water from this borehole. Even pupils at this school who used to fetch water from the streams and shallow wells are now having water within their school environment,” Mr. Milambo said.

And deputy school head teacher Michael Bwalya said the water scheme has helped the school to have clean water and improved hygiene standards as the toilets are ever kept clean with washing facilities.

Mr. Bwalya said the availability of water has enabled the school to embark on production unit such as cultivating bananas and various types of vegetables within the school environment.

“You see, in the past, it was difficult to keep our toilets clean because of lack of water. We could not even have production unit neither could we plant Simba grass but now that is a thing of the past. We really appreciate UNICEF and KFW for bringing us this water,” Mr. Bwalya said.

And one of the pupils Melba Chanda said the installation of a 10,000-litre capacity elevated water tank at the school is a dream come true because pupils now have access to clean water every time.

Chanda said in the past, it was difficult for pupils to have access to clean water within the school premises and some even missed lessons as they rushed to their homes to drink clean water.

“We are appreciative to UNICEF and KFW for this water. It was not easy in the past because we used to drink water from the borehole which was far from the school and some pupils even dodged classes as they went to search for water,” Chanda said.

Another pupil Earnst Chipasha said piped water at the school has helped them to improve the hygiene conditions at the school as it is helping them to clean their toilets and water the gardens.

Meanwhile, Chipunka rural health centre in charge Cliford Hamoya thanked UNICEF and KFW for the construction of the new toilets at the facility.

Mr. Hamoya said both the staff and patients have been using the old toilets which are in a dilapidated state and not safe for patients

He said the new toilets are conducive and have even facilities for bathing especially for women from labour ward.

Assistant Community Development Officer Doris Chibwe confirmed the development to ZANIS in Mwansabombwe district.

Ms. Chibwe said so far, the district has received 1,200 x 50 Kilogramme bags of D- compound fertilizer.

She said the caseload has increased form 1,118 in the previous farming season to 1,517 beneficiaries for the 2025 to 2026 farming season.

Ms. Chibwe said each beneficiary is expected to receive 2 x50 Kg bags of D- compound fertilizer, 2 x 50 Kg bags of urea fertilizer, 1 x 10 Kg bag of maize seed and 1 x 10 Kg bag of legumes.

And speaking after witnessing the arrival of two trucks loaded with fertilizer, District Commissioner Ivo Mpasa appealed to the beneficiaries to use the inputs for the intended purpose.

Mr. Mpasa said he will be monitoring the beneficiaries of the inputs to ensure that all the inputs are invested in the soil rather than ending on the markets.

The department of social welfare in Mwansabombwe district will increase the caseload of social cash transfer beneficiaries from the current caseload of 7,489 to over 8,000 beneficiaries

Assistant Social Welfare Officer Syvia Chilufya said in order to meet the eighth National Development Plan target, government is adding 250,000 more beneficiaries countrywide to the current 1.3 million SCT beneficiaries.

Ms. Chilufya said the district has been given an addition of 1,037 and that sensitization meetings for both current and prospective beneficiaries in all the 25 Community Welfare Assistance Committees (CWACs) have already been done.

“Government targets to reach 1.5 million households with Social Cash Transfer countrywide. As a district, we have been directed to add 1,037 more beneficiaries to our current caseload of 7,489 beneficiaries,” Ms. Chilufya said.

She explained that the target groups for the potential beneficiaries will include those aged 60 years and above, the chronically ill and on palliative care, persons with moderate or severe disabilities and the child headed households.

Ms. Chilufya said that only those who meet the selection criteria will be considered and are the ones who should attend the listing meetings.

“For this exercise, the female headed households will not be considered on the programme to create space for the underserved vulnerable groups. So only those who are aged 60 years and above, the chronically ill and on palliative care, persons with moderate or severe disabilities and the child headed households will be considered,” she explained.

Meanwhile, District Commissioner Ivo Mpasa appealed to the social workers to educate the potential beneficiaries so that only those who are eligible can be put on the programme.

Mr. Mpasa said the programme has helped to uplift the living standards of many communities in the district and encouraged the would-be beneficiaries to use the resources wisely.

“You see these funds have helped a number of households in our communities. It has helped them put food on the table. All I can say is to appeal to the current beneficiaries and the prospective ones to use the funds wisely,” Mr. Mpasa advised.

And the potential beneficiaries thanked government for the expansion of SCT programme in the district.

Bernadet Kalumba said with the addition of 1,037 more beneficiaries, those who were left out despite meeting the selection criteria will be considered.
