Our friends at Bike Newport, RI, Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, Conexión Latina Newport, FabNewport, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Newport Classical, and newportFILM have all been awarded grant funds from the Rhode Island Foundation to further their tremendous work serving members of the Newport community.

Read more below about how each of these nonprofits will utilize the funding.

The funding will support work ranging from educational programs for school children and disaster recovery preparation to food pantries and arts activities.

Another wonderful reNEWPORT meeting! Group members had a chance to meet new City Manager Colin Kennedy, introduced by Xay For Newport, and share updates on their organizations’ priority initiatives. Our community group continues to focus on supporting Newport’s public schools with a focus on attendance and remains open to other initiatives such as planting daffodils in Miantonomi Park. Thank you to all who joined us yesterday!

The Pathways Program at Salve Regina University provides first-generation Rogers High School students with academic and social support as well as new connections and experiences to help them achieve high school graduation, college success, and their professional dreams.

Join friends and neighbors for an encore screening of an incredible documentary shining a light on the city of Newport. NEWPORT: In this Together premiered at the Jane Pickens Theater in April 2024 with an intimate showing for cast members followed by a sold out public screening. Presented here with an introduction by the film-maker and Mayor of Newport, followed by a post-film panel discussion by community leaders.

ABOUT THE FILM: Shot in real time during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, NEWPORT: In This Together includes 108 firsthand accounts from Newport business owners, healthcare and frontline workers, nonprofit leaders, government officials, educators, students and residents as the pandemic and social unrest of 2020 unfolded. The film took more than three years to complete, and offers an unprecedented look not only at the fear and uncertainty of the time, but also the generosity, innovation and creativity of Newporters.

We are delighted that the reNEWPORT Community Group, which grew out of the film, was able to partner with Newport in Bloom, the Miantonomi Park Commission, the City of Newport RI, and private donors to bring 38,000 daffodils to the North End of Newport for the first time this past spring. "In November 2020, I realized I had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to document how Newport, RI, a small city with a big reputation, both nationally and internationally, responded to a global health pandemic. I entered into this film, as I always do, with an open mind, not a planned storyline." - Director Susan Sipprelle Over the past 3.5 years, our team conducted 200+ interviews and created the film, Newport: In This Together. We are thrilled to share our documentary with Newporters next week and with PBS viewers across the country later this spring through our partnership with American Public Television.

"I feel like I could do anything now." Elizabeth Plowden managed to successfully run her business, Bellevue Kids, and navigate the pandemic with three school-aged children. We're honored to share the stories of dozens of inspiring women in Newport: In This Together. Happy #InternationalWomensDay!
