Work on the construction of the new road, which connects the west of the central Pentecost to the east of Pentecost, has started in recent weeks at the Central of Pentecost in Manwis. The Public Works Department is responsible for the construction of this project. This project is one of several projects financed by World Bank. This region has not had access to the road for several years now, which made it very difficult for the population to access government services such as education and health. This project will help a lot the people of Pentecost a lot since third of the population of Pentecost lives in this part of the island. A big thank you to this government for wiping the the tears of this harwdworking people.

HOSPITAL CLOSED
The night of Sunday April 24, 2022 was a crisis for a young family from the village of central Pentecost. The young woman was due to give birth to her child at Melsisi health center but when arriving at the health center, the family was surprised by a note posted in front saying that the health was closed because it was used to treat Covid-19 patients. Nowhere to go, she have to give birth in the house of a relative.
The decision to closed its service was given to the nurse in charge by the Penama Health Management as a quick response to the outbreak of Covid-19 in the island of Pentecost.
What a bad decision on behalf of the Penama Health Management to have closed the service in this part of Pentecost knowing that there is only one health center in Central Pentecost 2. This shows that they are not aware of the health situation on the island of Pentecost.

Resign as Head of State after being found guilty by the court.



He resigned immediately for an offence of only a Vt1,000 fine.

We were having lunch today with Execellency Ati George Sokomanu when our conversation led to the story.

It was 1983 (only 3 years after independence). President Ati George Sokomanu heard that his son had an accident in North Efate. The Police identified the vehicle as a private vehicle whose owner is Ati George Sokomanu. It was not a major accident. But Ati George was soon summoned before the Court to stand trial by the prosecution.

Verdict - The expatriate judge found Ati George Sokomanu guilty. The sentence was a fine of Vt1,000 (one thousand vatu).

Ati George Sokomanu responded to the judge that because he is guilty, he is announcing officially in the court his immediate resignation as Head of State. The judge was shocked and almost collapsed in his seat!!

Ati George Sokomanu returned to his residence, immediately packed away his belongings and returned to his village at Mele.

At mid day the nation was shocked to hear the news on the radio.

Then Prime Minister Fr Walter Lini called an urgent cabinet meeting at the shocking news.

The next day the expatriate Public Prosecutor and the Judge received their deportation letter.

Ati George Sokomanu was soon reelected back as Head of State.

The leadership in the early 80's have set a very high standard for the new born nation of Vanuatu. 👌👌🇻🇺🇻🇺🇻🇺🇻🇺

Custom Attaire now acceptable by the Court

Initially the judge of the Supreme Court rejected him to appear before the Court in custom attaire. He was threatened with life imprisonment if he did not remove his custom attaire. He was even imprisoned because of his custom attaire. Additionally the public even condemned him for his stand on custom attaire.

But today the Supreme Court has no issue with custom attaire. Chief Vira Leo made a break through for Vanuatu on his own.

Now he is once more appearing in the Supreme Court defending his customary rights in a civil proceeding. His submission includes specific customary laws that protects his custom rights.

This will be another interesting outcome - Does customary rights really exist in Vanuatu? The Constitution is clear. Let's wait and hear what the court says.

This could be a landmark case which all the chiefs are waiting for.
