There are reports that PinkNews, one of the very few sources of reliable news and information about the trans community, is planning to abandon its campaigning journalism in support of the trans community in favour broader news and entertainment content. It's difficult to verify the reports, but if it's true this would be a devastating blow to the trans community, as we have so few advocates with a large reach to put our side of the story. Time will tell.

What happened to Labour Party claims they were going to stop using trans people as a political football? Despite claims that former Health Secretary Victoria Atkins' emergency ban on puberty blockers was motivated by her personal views and not by the evidence, new Health Secretary Wes Streeting is 'minded' to make the ban permanent.

This suggests that Labour's recent change of heart on trans rights may not have been merely to get elected, as some may have thought, but actually part of a wider policy to continue the attacks on trans rights and trans people.

The Government is ‘minded to renew’ an emergency banning order over the medications which suppress the natural production of s*x hormones.

Labour repeat their new position that trans women are not women and trans men are not men and so as a result trans people should not be placed on wards appropriate to their gender but in 'side rooms'.

This is despite medical staff saying side rooms are for patients with a medical reason to be accommodated separately and despite there being no recorded examples of anyone complaining about trans people on wards.

What happens if there are no side rooms available, where do Labour think trans people should be accommodated then?

This is a terrifying example of the nexus of trans activists, right-wing politicians and the media creating a storm out of a non-issue in order to turn it into a wedge, or culture war, issue to the detriment of a vulnerable group of people in society.

If Labour want to be seen as a progressive force in British politics, they need to stand up to the bullies on this, as well as on other issues.

Keir Starmer has suggested that trans women use private side room wards in hospitals instead of being allowed to use women's wards.

Another young trans person has taken their own life. This is such a sad and tragic indictment of this Tory government and how they don't care about ordinary people. Amelia had autism and was let down by mental health services. It currently takes two years to get an autism assessment and at least 8 to 10 years to get an appointment with the Gender Identity Clinic in the South West. These services need to be funded properly or this will happen again. Rest in power Amelia!

Apologies for the dead naming and misgendering throughout this article.

Trans hospital patients in England to be banned from female- and male-only wards
Health secretary Steve Barclay vows to update NHS constitution to give effect to proposals after consultation, says Aubrey Allegretti, Senior political correspondent with the Guardian.

Trans hospital patients in England will be banned from being treated in female- and male-only wards, under plans announced by the health secretary.

In a speech to Conservative activists at the party’s conference in Manchester, Steve Barclay also promised a patient’s request to have intimate care provided by someone of the same biological s*x would be respected.

He vowed to update the NHS constitution to give effect to the proposals after consultation, saying the changes would protect the privacy, dignity and safety of all patients.

However, the comments sparked a backlash from moderate Tory MPs, who fear LGBTQ+ people are being targeted as part of a wider culture war designed to appeal to the right of the party.

Jamie Wallis, a Conservative who became the first openly transgender MP last year, said Barclay was grappling with a non-issue.

Wallis cited freedom of information requests submitted to hospital trusts across the UK last year asking whether there were any complaints from biologically female inpatients about trans patients’ presence. None were recorded, according to the website Translucent.

Wallis said he was happy to work with Barclay to improve access to healthcare, adding: “I hope to see him solve problems which actually exist.”

Elliot Colburn, another Tory MP and chair of the cross-party group on global LGBT+ rights, said the distinction between s*x and gender in patients was important.

He said trans people could still contract illnesses that correspond with their birth s*x, such as ovarian and prostate cancer – and that women should “be made to feel as comfortable” during treatment.

But Colburn said there was a “need for clarity” – challenging Barclay to clear up questions including whether the policy would apply to those who had legally changed their gender. He added: “Given that the future of hospitals is in individual rooms anyway, what tangible change is actually needed?”

Other senior Tories were more strongly critical of Barclay’s speech, but asked to remain anonymous given their role in the government. One said: “I’m fed up of feeling intimidated by bigots and want people to know we’re still a home for LGBT+ people. Many of us will not back down.”

Barclay sought to appeal to Tory members, telling conference delegates in Manchester “we know what a woman is”.

As well as an announcement about more medical school places and an attack on “militant” striking junior doctors, Barclay devoted a significant chunk of his speech to social issues.

He criticised NHS trusts hiring for “bloated” diversity and inclusion teams and claimed patients’ voices were being ignored “when it comes to the importance of biological s*x in healthcare”.

“If we do not get this right now, the long-term consequences could be very serious for the protection of women and future generations,” said Barclay, referencing the slogan of this year’s Tory conference that commits to making “long-term decisions”.

The health secretary claimed victory after the reversal of “unacceptable changes” to the NHS website that he said erased references to women for conditions such as cervical cancer, and said NHS staff had been told not to declare their pronouns to each new patient.

Barclay also confirmed he would change the NHS consultation later this year to “recognise the importance of different biological needs and protect the rights of women” – paving the way for a ban on trans patients being treated in male- or female-only wards.

Health leaders welcomed a focus on patient outcomes but poured scorn on Barclay’s social agenda.

Julian Hartley, the chief executive of NHS Providers, said: “Any proposed changes to the NHS constitution should have improving inclusivity at the heart of what they do and be subject to wide conversations and consultation.”

Ministers should focus on making the health service “fit for the future” by boosting capital and day-to-day spending, as well as pushing ahead with social care changes, he added.

Sara Gorton, the head of health at the Unison union, called Barclay’s speech “deflection politics at its worst” and accused him of taking his eye off bringing down waiting lists, ending strikes and reforming social care.

There are wider concerns that cabinet ministers are pursuing a culture war, after Suella Braverman said LGBTQ+ people living in fear of discrimination should not automatically be entitled to asylum in the UK.

Alicia Kearns, the Tory chair of the foreign affairs committee, said Braverman “crossed the line” by having “singled out” LGBTQ+ people. She told Times Radio that while addressing issues with the asylum process was important, “it should never be at the cost or at the expense of an individual, let alone a vulnerable community”.

"In the previous guidance, the EHRC stated it would be discriminatory – under the Equality Act’s protected characteristic of gender reassignment – to refer to a trans pupil using their deadname or former pronouns.

"In the update, the EHRC removed this section entirely, suggesting that the watchdog no longer sees misgendering or deadnaming as discriminatory."

The UK’s equalities watchdog has updated previous guidance, suggesting misgendering trans pupils is not discrimination.

This should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone, but it is further proof both that trans women are being increasingly shut out of elite sports and that the anti-trans backlash juggernaut is still rolling on, attempting to crush all trans-inclusivity in its path.

The move, which is set to take effect by the end of the year and only covers British Cycling races, ends the hopes of Emily Bridges, who set a national junior men's record in 2018 and came out as a transgender woman in 2020.

It is unspeakably cruel to ban gender-affirming care such as hormone blockers, which are entirely reversible and proven to massively reduce su***de attempts, for teenagers. These lawmakers in the USA will have blood on their hands. They don't care about young people, it is simply about winning a culture war and for electoral gain.

The law will go into effect July 1, and trans youth currently taking medication to transition would have until the end of the year to stop doing so.

This is obviously to be welcomed. However it is clear that the SNP, like most political parties, is still riddled with anti- sentiment.

Seb Coe doesn't know whether trans women have an unfair advantage over cis women in athletics or not, but he has spoken with lots of people who think they might. So he has decided that the fairest thing to do is to ban trans women from competing in elite women's athletic events from next week (!) and then spend ages doing some research to see if he can find out. This overturns decades of World Athletics policy positions which have been to follow the available science, which states that trans women with testosterone levels within the normal female range (a contested topic in its own right) have no discernible advantage over cis women. So why the change of heart now? I'll let you decide the answer to that one.

Sebastian Coe, the president of the World Athletics Council, confirmed the position at a press conference on Thursday

look set to ditch their support for people and throw us under a bus in order to appeal to their target demographic, women under 50. Labour sources say they need to become 'socially conservative' in order to win the next general election. Having said that, this story only appears in right-wing newspapers, so could it just be muck-raking? It could but, sadly, under Sir Keir it seems all too plausible.

Around 60 - 80 people gathered on the Moor in Falmouth today for a vigil for Brianna G**y. Various people spoke very movingly about Brianna and the way society treats trans people and especially trans youth. The hope was expressed that the outpouring of grief and love we have seen at vigils across the country might lead to things getting better.

"A study on transgender women athletes in elite sport has found that if UCI rules are adhered to, there is currently no substantial evidence of any biological advantages for trans women competing in elite women’s sport.

"It found there was little evidence that biomedical factors related to male puberty such as lung size, bone density and hip-to-knee joint angle predict an unfair advantage. But some evidence that social factors like nutrition, training and access to equipment do.

"These are just some of the key findings listed in an 86-page report titled Transgender Women Athletes and Elite Sport: A Scientific Review, which was commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) and published in late 2022."

‘The performance advantages from social factors, training and access to equipment are far greater than testosterone,' paper concludes

"The announcement was greeted with fury by Scottish Social Justice Secretary Shona Robison, who called the decision to block the bill "outrageous".

"Arguing that the bill does not affect UK-wide equalities law, she said the "political" move demonstrated the UK government's "contempt for devolution".

""This is a dark day for trans rights and a dark day for democracy in the UK," she added."

It will be the first time ministers in London have used powers to stop a Scottish bill from becoming law.

What is Trans Liberation?

Over recent years we have seen much greater visibility and acceptance of trans people in the media. This is a good thing. However along with it has gone a backlash. The number of worldwide trans murders is going up year on year. There have been numerous attacks on trans rights in the US and Brazil. In Britain, the debate around reforming the Gender Recognition Act to give more rights to trans people has met with terrific resistance and the ‘debate’ (such as it is) has become toxic with celebrities like Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling and Father Ted writer Graham Linehan weighing in against the fight for trans rights. We need to campaign for trans rights as part of wider movements for LGBTQ+ rights and fundamental human rights. Trans liberation is the fight to liberate trans people from oppression whilst also fighting for human liberation.
