What a hero he is! Bear 🎖 🌿🐨

Update: We're so proud of our koala detection dog Bear for his work finding 10 live koalas in Gympie, Queensland! 🐨⁠

Bear and his handler from were deployed to Gympie to search for surviving koalas in the aftermath of the Upper Kandanga Bushfire. One of the koalas found, Ranger, was severely dehydrated and malnourished from the fires, but not burned. He was taken to a local wildlife hospital and the veterinarian who examined him reported that his condition was very poor. Ranger is currently receiving treatment and will be monitored as his recovery progresses.⁠
⁠
Koalas are particularly vulnerable to bushfires as they are slow-moving and their habitat of eucalypts—woody plants with capsule fruiting bodies—burns quickly and intensely. Koalas can survive in their habitat for weeks after a fire, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Search and rescue teams are trying to locate survivors, though it’s challenging as koalas are camouflaged high in tree tops and difficult to spot with the human eye. When areas are declared safe, Bear is then deployed to look for injured and displaced koalas through the scent of their fur.⁠

The campaign is built around a web-based and mobile game that puts players in the role of policymakers so they can vote on the climate policies they want to see.
