"Rachel you sound like a PERFECT fit for this role. You've got just what we need. Are you available to interview next week?"
(In my head) "This role is an ideal quick fix, I know I'll get it and can start straight away. But I don't really want this. It's a huge pay-cut from my last job. Besides, this is not my passion. But I'll go ahead with the interview anyway because I'll take anything right now."
So I agreed to meet with the directors who were excited to meet me for an interview.
3 DAYS LATER...
My mom (who knows me inside out 😁) asked me, "Rachel, do you really want that job? That's not really you, is it?"
She was right. I was settling because of desperation. It wasn't me and didn't feel right. I was compromising on my non-negotiable core values, including salary.
So I sent an email to the TA partner and cancelled my interview.
The morning of the interview she was literally begging me on the phone:
TA: "Are you sure Rachel? We were looking forward to meeting you!"
Me: "No I'm OK thanks."
TA: "OK no problem, what else do you have lined up then?"
Me rummaging my head for an answer real fast 😂: "I've got an offer for a performance management role so that's why I'm turning this one down."
TA: "Oh congratulations, all the best in your new role then!"
Little did she know that I had absolutely ZERO job offers that week, not even an interview invite!
So why did I say that?
Because I had faith.
I know that when I declare what I believed and wanted to happen for my life, it would happen. God would not let me be ashamed when I put my trust in Him (Psalm 31:1).
Guess what!!!
That evening I received an email following up on an application I sent nearly two weeks prior. I had not expected to hear back on THIS application, of all the ones I applied for. I thought it was so unlikely that I forgot all about it.
But LOOK AT GOD!!!
The recruiter said I was successful on my first round and asked me to write a personal statement for the second round, which was due within 24 hrs. I turned it around the very next morning.
The next week I was interviewed, and the same afternoon I received the news that I landed the job!!!
A job that, mind you, not only met, but EXCEEEDED my salary expectations!
That's my current role as Performance Manager, which I've been in for almost two months.
My point?
Your words (positive and negative) have POWER!!! More than we are often willing to admit.
If you know you deserve a specific role, with a specific salary, pray it and then DECLARE IT!!! Act like it's already yours.
Finally, like I told the graduates at The University of Westminster last week, NEVER compromise on your non-negotiable.
