In Part 1, we saw the direct impact of colonization and how it regulated gender and s*xuality in India, Vietnam and the Philippines. In part 2, we look at countries that weren't colonized per se, but did in fact have to submit to Western hegemony in order to survive. We talk about China's defeat in the O***m wars, Commodore Perry forcing Japan to open up to Western trade, Japan's rapid modernization and transformation into a colonizing power, as well as how Iran, Turkey, Thailand, like many others, proactively modernized to protect their sovereignty and dignity.

As shared in the last episode I’m taking a few extra weeks before releasing episode 6. It is by far the biggest episode and tbh, in addition to the new scholar interview, I am in need of a much needed self-care break.

In the meantime, here’s a podcast you might want to check out! - an oral history of q***r s3x. This one is NSFW and not for young ears. Listener discretion is advised!

I chose Aditya’s episode because his story goes beyond stereotypes we in the west might have about being q***r in Asia. And I think we in the diaspora need to be reminded of that often. Life isn’t black and white, good and bad, progressive or backwards. It’s everything everywhere all at once. 🌈💕

A god of same-s*x love. A bearded goddess of war and fertility. Gods in the form of genitalia. What can mythology and folk religion teach us about q***rness in premodern Asia?

What was it like when Love was divorced from Marriage? In this episode we explore what marriage looked like in premodern Asia, how the definition of love was different then, and how the love revolution happened in the west.

We also have a few very surprising marriage customs!

Tune in to hear about love and marriage in Vietnam, China, Iran, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia 💍🎂🐓🦆🎏

In our discussion portion, co-host shares her experience as an Iranian q***r growing up in Texas, her wholesome coming out story, misconceptions about polyamory and great advice for monogamous couples too! 👰‍♂️🤵‍♂️🤵‍♀️👰‍♀️🤵‍♀️

In this very bizarre and dark moment in time, it is the increasingly connected grassroots solidarity movements that remain a beacon of hope for our collective liberation. Together, we are powerful. Don’t listen to those who make fun of you for daring to imagine a brighter future for us all.

Our modern Western model of gender and s*xuality is great, but it’s not universal. Not by a long stretch. It quickly falls short when we try to map it onto other cultures both today and in premodern Asia.

Gender role and gender identity have historically gone hand in hand. If you’re female, you do the girly things. In the Bugis culture, gender role does not have to be dictated by gender identity per se. Someone can identify as male and still move through society in a female role as calabai. We don’t quite have an equivalent for calabai here.

We’ve heard of gender fluid, but what about orientation fluid? In the case of Chigo, some of them were engaging in homos*xual behavior only while they were buddhist acolytes.

There are other nuances that aren’t captured by the LGBTQIA+ labels that we have. For example the Thai gender identities imply the gender expression of the people you’re attracted to, in addition to their gender and yours.

In so many premodern Asian societies, third gender people held a special place in society. They were spiritual leaders, communicators, and very highly regarded. They were often seen as intermediaries between gods/spirits and people.

I’d like to thank our scholars, Prof. Sachi Schmidt Hori, associate professor of Japanese literature and culture at Dartmouth college, and Prof. CunCun Wu, professor of Chinese literature at the University of Hong Kong. Also a big thank you to our guest co-host TONIE for sharing their thoughts and their story on this episode.

will be back in two weeks with ep.4: Love, Marriage & Their Casual Relationship 💍🤪

Shoutout to ‘s book “Before We Were Trans”

It’s Juneteenth.

Like every other day of the year, we should be listening to Black voices. But if you haven’t started yet, it’s not too late to start.

Here’s 10 book recs from my own audiobook collection. Some are memoirs, some are YA, some are books to work through our internalized white sup, and some are history. There is pain but there is also so much joy to celebrate and protect. Hope you find something that piques your interest!

Share your fav/recently read 📚 by Black authors in the comments, I’m always looking for more books to read! I’m open to anything but tend to gravitate towards memoirs lately. Not into romance, sci-fi or fantasy but enjoy other types of fiction. What should I read next?

PS: did you know the umbrella term “Asian American” was largely inspired by the political organizing of our Black brothers and sisters fighting for liberation?
