THEY’RE HERE!!!!!!!! The long awaited arrival of our travel companions for the next chapter of our trip… ‘Through the Middle’ with Nanny & Lollipop (aka Carissa’s parents).

We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be able to give our kids the gift of seeing Australia. Spending a whole year on the road with them at such formative ages is a dream come true and we will forever cherish this time. But being able to share this time with their grandparents as well - even better 🫶 It takes a village! Bring on the adventure!!

Pictured is our first stop after Three Ways: Devil’s Marbles and its campground. We did 2 nights to have a catch up but you definitely only need 1 if you’re travelling through - a great camp with stunning views and sunsets/sunrises with easy walks. But you can also camp free unpowered at the pub down the road or pay for powered behind it 👌 Wonder Roo Caravans

A couple of pubs you may have heard of 😉🍻 Not many people can say they’ve been to one of Australia’s most remote, iconic outback pubs… Justin’s lucky enough to have been to Daly Waters 3 times! Not mad about it.

At Larrimah we tried a pie (IYKYK) but aside from its Netflix fam, pretty cool spot to pull up and break the drive. We chose to stay at Daly Waters but Larimahs pub/caravan park is a G’Day member with discount (somewhere to stay on our 4th trip through 😉) 🥧

We had the best fun dancing the night away with our mates

For those who say Kaka-don’t… we say Kaka-do! We were feeling so overwhelmed planning Kakadu - maybe it was the 6 month burnout, maybe it was the post WA blues or maybe it was the word on the travellers grapevine about it being a little too difficult for younger kids. ALL of those things were blown out of the water once we were here. In our opinion, BETTER than Litchfield.

If you’re confused about where to stay, we’ll help you there and say go straight to Cooinda Lodge. It’s pretty much a caravan park (you’ll want power because the temp is hitting 36/37 in WINTER), there’s a huge pool with a waterfall, restaurants, bar, live music, jumping pillow and playground. And the famous Yellow Water Billabong cruises leave from here - another must do. Just make sure stop at Cahills Crossing 🐊 and Ubirr to see the rock art on the way in.

Maguk was our favourite walk and waterfall. It’s only 1km in and the water is impossibly clear (made Carissa feel better about crocs). Justin and the kids even went for a swim! Something we didn’t know you could do when every puddle on the road and walk has warning signs/salties 😅

Last on the list was the most famous Jim Jim Falls - not falling in Winter 😂. So this was the only one that didn’t quite live up to the hype.

Moral of the story… Kaka-DO 👌🐊🤯 SAVE for your trip to the NT

The road to Darwin - & are quintessential NT stops and have been on my (Carissa's) list a long time! Such cool beach vibes and the perfect intro back to the coast... Dundee with it's pub that overlooks a fenced splash park instead of a 'pub playground' and Crab Claw set right on the ocean front.

The humidity was a slap in the face to these Queenslander's who seem to have forgotten what humidity is like, having been away from home so long. And certainly opens your eyes to what Summer must be like given these 'Winter' days and nights are temps of 30 odd degrees! 🥵🌴

Litchfield - just us, the Darwinties and a billion tour buses. In fact it’s the first time we’ve ever been outnumbered in a caravan… Safari Camp was all tents and campers and most of them people from Darwin out for the weekend!

We loved chasing waterfalls but a tip if you’re headed here… be at Wangi and Florence before 10am. We learnt the hard way that by lunchtime Wangi may as well be Bondi Beach, it’s that crowded. But an early trip back meant we had the place to ourselves. Well just us and the freshies anyway 😉🐊

Through the NT ~ quick kms from WA, we did about 800kms in 2 days (that’s HUGE for us 😅) Katherine Farm Stay was the perfect overnighter and the girls loved the 3:30pm animal feeding - Mickey put the emu pellets in his mouth and let the emus peck the food out 🤯🤯🤯 😂

Onto Adelaide River which we found out is famous for so much more than Charlie the buffalo from Crocodile Dundee… the hotel was established in the early 1900s and they even relocated the WWII military base from Darwin to here. A sobering reminder of the top end’s contribution to our nation. And of course Jus had a buffalo burger!

We hit civilisation (which means POST 🙌) and this was a welcome parcel at the end of the Gibb 🍸 We’re super stoked to share we’ve teamed up with the team at Garden Street Gin Club to offer you guys a ‘LAIDBACK’ code. $99, a gift and an additional little bottle too. Cheers!

So many favourites of The Gibb but this one is the real deal. Our favourite hike of our whole trip… it almost seems Jurassic and feels and looks like every picture you’ve ever seen of The Kimberley. Stunning.

It’s also a heck of an adventure and would be a big hike for the kids to tackle so we split it - Dads in the arvo, Mums the next morning. Grade 5 with boulder pullups over waterfalls and even one part you have to climb up the face of a fall (pic #6).

The entire time you’re actually walking right beside a stream so there’s that constant water bubbling sound and with no kids to pierce it with “are we there yet”s… it was legitimate bliss. An absolute must-do when at El Q!

Days + nights at El Questro. Zebedee Springs still a solid favourite 🌴 (at Char’s request we’ve been 4 times now between this season and last) We were also super excited to splurge on a chopper flight over the property and its surrounding gorges 🚁

Went up to Pigeon Hole Lookout for a sunset with the crew and a last group photo. But nights might just take the cake. Live music and dancing the night away by the fire with friends under the stars 🔥✨

Sunset party at the Pentecost crossing… the other side of it is actually an epic free camp but with so many kids and so many saltwater crocs in the river we opted to camp a little further back at Home Valley. Didn’t mean it wasn’t a stressful sunset watching the kids (🐊😮‍💨) the big picnic mat was where they were all told to sit and stay 😅

If you do camp at the free camp though, make sure you remember to come to this side to watch a sunset. As it went down behind us the red cliffs absolutely lit up for that iconic ‘Gibb River Road’ view 🤌

Kimberley highlights in 10 frames… which one's your favourite? (ours isn't pictured - they get their own posts 😉)

1 - Freshy spotting at Windjana Gorge
2-3 - A steep climb but worth the view, Bell Gorge
4 - Galvans Gorge and it’s perfectly placed Boab (we skipped Adcock!)
5-8 - Manning Gorge (the kids and backpacks floated over in a tub) and the campground’s ‘swim beach’
9 - Arvos spent at Gibb River
10 - Salties right out front of camp at Home Valley River Camp

Or is there a better way to do it all with a 20ft van?

Gibb ccommo Part 2 - and the best free camp on the Gibb… Gibb River rest area was a kids haven. Afternoons spent chilling in ankle deep water while the kids had free rein climbing on rocks, swimming and playing in the sand.

We actually nearly did Ellenbrae as a day visit (there’s a Durack River free camp) but boy are we glad we didn’t! This station is so GREEN, has a beautiful feel and the funkiest camp kitchen we’ve seen! Not to mention the outback baths (more on that coming) and scones.

Lastly we chose the River Camp at Home Valley Station because it still has Pentecost views (including salty appearances) but is set a little further back from the water than the free camp so we didn’t need to fret about the kids and croc infested water AS much. It turned out to be an absolute fav because we had enough space to park the vans in one big circle and could all hang in the middle.

Swipe right to the end to see the epic Home Valley sunrise… we saw salties down there every day (and 3 sets of eyes staring back one night) so this was a nervous camera click on the bank before I bolted back to camp!

📍 1-3 Gibb River Rest Area
📍 4-6 Ellenbrae Station
📍 7-10 Home Valley Station (River Camp)

Never getting sick of this! Travelling the Gibb with a big group has been the absolute best fun but managed a minute (and a photo) just the 2 of us after everyone had gone to bed (had to drag Justin away from his nighttime packup routine 😅).

Beginning the Gibb 🙌 (save these campsites) We went from Birdwood Downs to a couple of free camps on the start of our Brooome-El Questro journey. Mac and Char will tell you we're doing it “with ALL our friends” 🥰

Travelling with a group of 10 rigs may seem like madness but it’s honestly been amazing. We set a a place to go and a time to head off the night before to make sure we’re rolling into the next camp early enough to get spots. And all the kids are living the ultimate village life… playing together and making the best memories.

2-4 📍 Birdwood Downs Station

7-10 📍 March Fly Glen free camp

One. Last. One. After spending the last 4 or so months on the WA coast watching sunset after sunset we are NOT ok about heading East 😭

But it's so far from home and we have spent a huge bulk of our time here in the last 2 years. It probably is about time we start heading back... slowly! And plus, there's still a heck of a lot more to see (including the Gibb - TODAY)!!

We’ve called it. Site C9 at Pender Bay is the best caravan site we’ve ever parked (check out some of the views in the last week!). Agree or disagree?

What a day out! We followed along with Bundy and his family from the Djarindjin Community to learn about how they find food and water on the land. From spearing fish and crabs to digging in mangrove roots for cockle shells and most mind blowing of all - finding fresh water fountains at low tide 🤯🤯🤯

It felt a little croccy walking around in the creek this far north but Bundy assured us that they’re full and either sleeping in a pool or out in the ocean 🙈🐊

They also showed us how they cook up their catch on coals and use mangrove leaves for plates so the tide would clean up after us. Best of all we got to take a mangrove jack with us and cooked it up on the fire that night too 🤌 Australia's North West

Our perfect day out in Broome itinerary 🌴

Start out at ‘the stairs’. Navigate to ‘Simpsons Beach’ and be prepared for it to feel like an awkward driveway in an industrial estate - it’s not! A few metres after the turn off you’ll see the beach access sign and get a cool view of the stairs down to the beach

After that head out to the ‘Solitary tree’ (it’s a point of interest on Wikicamps or you can navigate to ‘Red Sand Beach’ on Google). This is a great drone shot but even walking along the red sand blending into the blue water is mind blowing. Best at high tide

We then stopped off at Moontide Distillery for a little paddle and the girls got a cheese board. There’s lawn games for kids and it feels super relaxing despite being hemmed in by big carparks and sheds 🍸

How lucky were we to also have Staircase to the Moon on while we were here! We were staying at the Discovery which offers a brilliant lawn out front to setup and watch. You can also battle the crowds for a spot at the Town Beach markets but be early

Some things we missed that you could squeeze in if you’re on a time constraint - lunch at Spinifex brewery 🍻, a float down Coconut Wells 🥥 (check the tide) or even a shop in Chinatown (Carissa’s favourite was the book store 📕)

If we’ve missed a Broome fav feel free to comment it below and save if you’re headed North 📍

That time we waited 2.5 hours staking out our spot on Cable Beach to see the camels stroll past as the sun sets behind them. They walked in front of us 5 out of 6 times… and on their 6th cross - the one RIGHT as the sun was setting - they walked behind us and we missed the photo

Nothing like a last minute scramble of kids, camera/tripod and cars for ‘the shot’. And whilst it’s not all ‘for the gram’, I (Carissa) do love an iconic photo opp and it turned out not too bad regardless. Sure made for a hilarious time and an even better story of our Cable Beach sunset experience. Cheers

Carissa's take on finding an alternative camp sites (read: cheaper) is in this month's Go RV online magazine. If you're interested, you can read it here https://www.emag.gorv.com.au/gorv-digital-magazine-issue-87/0456508001716968566/p52 and subscribe to this free monthly publication on the Go RV home page... I hear there's more interesting content from us coming up 😉

"The cost of living is rising right across the country and somewhere to park your RV is no exception as parks and councils alike respond to a boom in post-covid RV travel. If you're struggling to afford a traditional site, there are plenty of other options. In this article, a caravanning family shares what they have discovered so far..."
