This might seem like a random activity, but trust me. The kiddos LOVE it! When you can’t fit a swing into your home, this is the next best option and it provides an opportunity to work on vocabulary, like “ready, set, go”, “faster/slower”, or ”stop”.

For the month of June, we will be focusing on simple activities that you can use in the home with your child. All of these activities are relatively easy to access and inexpensive to acquire.
In my practice, I allow my students to lead. This means that while I have some idea of what me and the student will work on, I remain flexible by allowing the child to determine how we will stimulate certain language goals through play.
The following activities are the top five activities that most of my students gravitate towards. They have become my go-to options for establishing rapport with my students and getting them motivated to engage in play-based language therapy.

CORE WORDS IN ADAPTED READING
We have been talking about core words for the last couple of days and the purpose they serve in early language development. Let’s shift a bit to talk about different ways to stimulate development of core words in the home. One of the best ways to stimulate this is through reading books!
Depending on the age of your child, they may not willingly sit through an entire reading; however, their attention may be drawn to the pictures in the book. Use this to your advantage! Create your own story, using core words that are related to the pictures.
In our line of adapted books, each level is designed to incorporate core words and early language skills that develop during a certain age range. For example in “Brice and Nina Go To The Zoo”, target core words and vocabulary include “see” and “no”. The repetition of the vocabulary also helps with word retrieval and memory.

COPY A WORD, ADD A WORD; It’s as simple as that! Modeling is such an important part of early language development because it demonstrates to children the flexibility of language and how words can be used in a variety of different ways. This approach is no different!
We see in the video that this child spontaneously says “open”. The clinician responds by adding a new word to the word the child already used, “box”. In this way, the child is able to hear how this word can be used in a short phrase to make a request.

This month, we will be talking about strategies for stimulating word imitations. There are two strategies that I use in therapy to target imitating words: the “copy-add” approach and the “3-5 second wait”.
The “copy-add” approach is the strategy I use in therapy to stimulate use of single words or 2+ words in a phrase. For example, if a child says “open”, I repeat the word (open), and then add another word for context (“open door” or “open box”). Whether the child repeats the entire phrase or not, I always model how to add a new word to the word the child already knows.
The second strategy I use for stimulating word imitation is to “wait 3-5 seconds” to allow the child the opportunity respond. Let’s say, for example, that you have modeled the word “go”. Give the child up to five seconds to imitate the word that you modeled.

1. I am a pediatric speech therapist specializing in bilingual early language development and intervention.
2. I have worked in private practice for almost 4 years, but I previously spent 3.5 years in the school system.
3. I have written and self-published three adapted children’s books, the first being published in 2021. This is how Sam Corley Publishings came to be!
4. I founded a non-profit at the end of 2022 which has a mission of closing the gap between underserved communities and early intervention care domestically and internationally

As a speech-language pathologist working in a private clinic, I perform a lot of initial language evaluations for children under the age of four years old. Naturally, when parents bring their young child for an evaluation, they come in search of answers; an explanation as to why their child isn’t speaking. One of the most common questions that I’m asked by parents is “Do you think my child has Autism?”
While I am not qualified to diagnose anyone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), I am familiar with some of the early signs associated with Autism that some children may exhibit. If you believe your child exhibits any of these early signs, get in contact with your pediatrician for a referral to a specialist, such as a developmental pediatrician or a child psychologist.
*This is not an exhaustive list and not all Autistic people demonstrate these characteristics.

Welcome to Autism Awareness Month!
We at Sam Corley Publishings embrace the differences between all children that we serve, whether they present neurotypically or are neurodivergent. It is this respect for differences in neurotype that we created the adapted book series, so that all children can have access to literature!
All of our books are adapted to incorporate the use of picture symbols for visual cueing. When it comes to language development, picture symbols are helpful tools for learning new vocabulary because visual cues assist with vocabulary recall and hold the child's attention longer than just hearing new words.
For language development in autistic children, visual cues are especially helpful with task engagement and presenting new vocabulary visually and not just through audition, which can be challenging for this particular population.

Stimulating gestural imitations is a great way to improve pre-language skill development in young children.
Why?
Because children can imitate gross motor movements a lot easier than they can imitate words and sounds!
Two great ways to stimulate gestural imitations is through imitating play routines and simple gestures or baby signs. Take a look at some of these examples and leave a comment with which strategy you might use to stimulate gestural imitations with your child.

Believe it or not, blowing bubbles is my go-to activity for stimulating shared attention in speech therapy. I don't know what it is about a little water and soap, but it is often an immediate motivator for establishing a social connection.
When blowing bubbles at home, try popping the bubbles that are falling close by your child or stomping on all the bubbles that fall on the ground with your child.

What is a familiar script? A familiar script is a commonly used word, phrase, or expression. An example of this would be exclaiming "oh no" when we make a mistake or "ready, set, go" when we're anticipating a race. Children tend to pick up quickly on familiar scripts like these because: 1. They are predictable expressions AND 2. ENGLISH The caregiver is so important to the language learning process because they are the ones the introduce and model new vocabulary in daily household activities and routines. During play, virtually any word or phrase can be modeled by the caregiver to narrate actions. In this video, the clinician models “up” and “down” multiple times until the child catches on to the pattern.
