Our new version 2 Rex specs arrived today! The purple ones are original. The new ones are very similar to the origins but there are a few perceptible differences. The lens shape is a little different the shape seems to wrap a little more giving a wider field of view, the logo is embossed into the edge of the new ones, they are thinner on the outside edges and look more aerodynamic. They are obviously comfortable like the first gen as she even fell asleep with them on. Hope to go for a ride tomorrow and will post updates.

Helmet 2.0 is made out of a combination of forged and woven carbon fiber. It is only 6 ounces only 40% of version 1.0. It started with building a model of what her head actually is plus space for movement and padding. Then I had to create a “negative” split mold that is smooth and polished for the carbon to be put into so it would have a smooth finish. The carbon is put into the mold and then vacuum infused with resin for curing. Meanwhile I heat formed lexan to the original model to create a face shield. Once the shell was done it had to be sanded and polished, openings cut, hardware and padding installed. And there we have it.

People have asked about her helmet. Version 1.0 although it fit and looked decent it wasn’t fitted well enough and due to the construction of fiberglass mesh and auto body filler and paint it was just too heavy. Despite this she would wear it without complaint, but I felt it just wasn’t good enough and went onto a shelf.

Probably my most favorite gift ever! For Christmas 2 years ago my daughter took a picture that I had of Mitzi on the Blue Ridge Parkway and painted it in acrylic on canvas.
