11/09/2021

{1 PM Saturday} A tropical depression may form in the area shaded in red within the next few days. There is a 90% chance of that happening. This system is forecast to move toward or just east of the RGV. This means heavy rainfall and some gusty winds will be possible especially Sunday night into Monday. The heaviest rain conditions will be closer to the coast, but the forecast is still tricky. Any shift in the forecast track could mean different impacts to your neighborhood. Stay tuned.

17/06/2021

A broad area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico now has a 90% chance of development. It looks very disorganized and dry especially on the west side, but the area of low pressure will finally be on the move today. The low could develop into a tropical depression by tonight or tomorrow over the central Gulf of Mexico. This system is still expected to move northward.

Here in the RGV… sea breeze showers will continue today and very little rain activity is expected Friday because we’re on the dry side of things. This weekend will be hot with no rain. If you plan to get some relief from the heat at South Padre Island watch for a high risk of rip current, high surf, and coastal flooding. It is possible some beach access areas may close. If access remains open and you decide to drive your vehicle onto the beach, stay aware of high tides. Be off the beach before the tide comes in to avoid getting stuck.

{3:00PM Tuesday} The Storm Prediction Center has updated their severe weather risk outlook. Hidalgo County and a portion of Western Willacy County are now included in the "slight risk" level (yellow shade) for severe weather tonight. The main threat will be damaging winds. There is also a small chance for large hail in western Starr County. The tornado threat is extremely low tonight. Not everyone will experience severe storm conditions. The best chance for storms will be after 7 PM tonight through tomorrow afternoon.

Please be sure to monitor the latest weather updates on our KRGV page, KRGV First Warn 5 Weather app, on Channel 5 News.

Heads up! Weather changes are on the way. A strong late season cold front will move through the valley overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. There is a “small” chance of severe weather in western portions of the RGV (mainly in Starr County). The biggest threat will be hail from any storm that rolls over the Rio Grande from Mexico. Download the KRGV Weather app, and keep your NOAA weather radios ready just in case.

Scattered showers are likely over the rest of the valley tonight and tomorrow. Temperatures will cool into the 60s by afternoon so keep a sweater and rain gear nearby. See you tomorrow morning on Channel 5 News at 9 AM.

I don't think this has ever happened before. All 254 Texas counties are under a Winter Storm Warning... So is every county in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Brr!

18/01/2021

Grab the umbrella. 🌂 The chance of rain is on the increase! Our best chance for showers this week will be Wednesday when a weak cold front moves into the RGV. It will not be drought busting rain... rainfall amounts may be mostly under a quarter of an inch, but we will take whatever rain we can get.

11/01/2021

Rain/Sleet being reported in the Brownsville area.

24/12/2020

{3:23AM} It's WINDY out there! Wind is gusting upwards of 40 MPH in some areas. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM for Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy Counties. The strong wind will begin to die down through mid morning, but calm conditions are not expected until Thursday evening.

23/12/2020

Hang on tight!
Big changes coming weather wise... winds will turn gusty after midnight as a strong cold front gets ready to push through the area. Watch out with lawn furniture and holiday decor; secure your trash cans. Winds could gust up to 40 mph in the early morning hours.
Temperatures will drop to the upper 40s overnight. There is a very slight chance of rain along and after the front, but rain chances look slim. There will be a notable change in temperatures tomorrow. Highs will be in the lower 60s under breezy conditions.

Merry Christmas 🎄

23/12/2020

I don't have a telescope, but check this out! I snapped a photo of the great conjunction with my iPhone outside the KRGV Weslaco studio. Saturn is about a 0.5° away from Jupiter, but it looks like a bright star to us without a telescope.

21/12/2020

A cold front is expected to arrive overnight Wednesday into Thursday. 🌬 The forecast calls for strong winds on Christmas Eve during the day. Temperatures will only reach the lower 60s, so it will feel nice and cool outdoors. 🎅🏼 Santa will feel right at home on Christmas morning as temperatures may dip into the upper 30s! 🎄 A pleasant day is in store for Christmas Day.

13/12/2020

{4:00PM} It's warm and breezy now, but check out the forecast temperatures hour by hour. Grab the jackets! We'll drop into the 40s overnight tonight. Tomorrow morning will be very chilly. Wind chill readings could be anywhere between 32-43 degrees. Stay warm, and use caution with heaters! By afternoon tomorrow, temperatures will only reach the lower and mid 60s.
