Welcome to the Nigerian Books of Records' official fan page on Facebook. This is an engagement group to all fans of good vibes, positive energy, believers in the new Nigerian project, reformation of the black man and reinvention of Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. The group is here to promote the works and legacy of the NBR. Nigerian Books of Record (NBR) was founded to project the internat

ional image of Nigeria in a positive light. In the international community, the perception of our dear nation is almost always negative. In some cases, identifying as a Nigerian might be construed as courtship with instant banishment from new relationships or even old ones. Sadly, the insistent tongue of negativity wags, leaving behind hills of harmful stereotypes in the way of the unsuspecting Nigerian. Nigerian Books of Record Research is keen to counter the negativity with the truth, by pulling out huge database of Nigeria’s positive contributions to humanity. At Nigerian Books of Record, we keep track of record breakers, impact makers, and change agents. We aim at documenting, celebrating, and honoring the remarkable achievements and excellent records of people. By honoring new generations of game changers and sharing their authentic stories, we aim to break boundaries, entertain, inspire, and inform the world. Books of Record will always strive to encourage, find, and share the uniqueness in every achiever that has distinguished themselves through hard work in every professional calling of life. Support us by inviting everyone in your contact to join the group and participate in the conversation.

Nigerian Books of Record Research Centre inducts Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin as a Fellow.

It is an established fact that a people or society without a sense of history has no future. It is against this background that the Nigerian Book of Records led by a patriotic Nigerian, Prof. David David to lead the attitudinal change of Nigerians in a bid to make her a country to be proud of.

Like the Guinness Book of Record, the primary focus of Nigerian Books of Record is to recognize and immortalize Nigerians who have made remarkable achievements in their chosen professional callings, to break the gap between history and achievers in Nigeria.

Hardworking, zealous, industrious and selfless minds in Nigerian societies are celebrated as ethical exemplars and that such individuals in Nigerian Books of Record are elevated and positively positioned as role models for future generations to emulate and accentuate the value system of Nigerian society.

While being inducted as a Fellow into the Nigerian Book of Records, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin commended the Research Institute for deeming her fit for such accolade, noting that every human being is always inspired to do evil or good before its actualisation. "We must deliberately put in place, measures and role models of positive inspiration on our youths. Youth are the trustees of prosperity of a nation"

Others inducted with her are ace talking drummer, Aralola Olamuyiwa and Dr Raphael James of Centre for Research Information Management Media & Documentation, CRIMMD.

Distinguished leadies and gentlemen, we present to you a real life super hero, Yakubu Fanami. He died saving others. The NBR Supreme Council recently conclude plans to celebrate his memories in the Nigerian Books of Record Hall of Fame. (Anyone with a vital information on how to reach his mother should let us know)

FLASHBACK: Yakubu, The Brave Borno Student Who Died For Others To Live.

On the 25th of Jan 2017, Yakubu Fanami, an SS1 student sacrificed his life by restraining a female su***de bomber from gaining access to a Mosque at Kaleri, Borno State. He and the su***de bomber exploded. His heroic act saved hundreds of lives that day.

BACKGROUND

Yakubu Fanami was a young mosque guard in Borno State. He prevented a female Boko Haram su***de bomber from killing hundreds of worshipers. Brazenly, he paid the price so others could live.

The su***de bomber was heading toward the congregation on that fateful day, January 25, 2017. But the young Yakubu stopped her from gaining access to the mosque. The su***de bomber, however, detonated the explosive and bombed herself up with Yakubu. But other worshippers were saved.

At that time, the deceased was an SS1 student in a secondary school at Kalare, Borno.

A GRIEVING MOTHER WHOSE TEARS HAVEN’T DRIED

The Scoop Storytelling Initiative visited Yakubu’s mother, Altine Musa and she sobbed as she recollects the nice memories she had had with her son.

“He went to pray at the Friday mosque that fateful day,” she recalled. We were at home when we heard a deafening sound of a detonated bomb.”

“I rushed outside, telling people that my Yakubu is there at the mosque and those people held me back, saying I can’t go further.

“Later, I was told of his demise and they had to ask me if I was ready to see his co**se and I said yes,” Altine added.

She described her son as one of the most generous people she had ever known, saying his willingness to help people around him always awed her.

‘WE NEVER IMAGINED HIM GIVING OUT HIS LIFE…’

The chief Imam at the Friday mosque where the incident happened, Mallam Muhammad Musa, said no one had ever imagined a mosque guard like Yakubu could die for others.

“We never imagined him giving out his life to protect them,” said the chief Imam. “That was a boundary everybody was shocked he could cross.”

“Having died in this course, he has died a martyr and Allah will surely reward him,” the Imam added.

He, however, accused the government of neglecting them. Musa said there was no intervention by the government to help the victims of the bombing.

NOT ONLY HIS MOTHER MOURNS HIM

“We were all outside when the girl su***de bomber appeared wearing a long hijab (veil) . She was asked by one of the elderly guards to lift her hijab and reveal what she was holding but she refused,” Umar Ali, a survivor and victim of the attack, recounts.

“Yakubu then carried a stick and attempted to hit her with it which scared her and they both exploded,” he added. “The elderly guard has now lost an eye from the attack. The explosion threw us in different directions but Yakubu died there instantly.”

Explosives Planted by Boko Haram Bombmaker Explode, Tear Him Apart

Saleh Amin, Director of Darrusalam Academy, where the deceased was once a student, described him as a “regular and cooperative student.”

He said the news of his death was a shock to the whole school.

“It’s exceptional for you to sacrifice your life for others. Nobody expected him to go to that extent,” Amin said.

Fatima Sulaiman, one of the teachers at the school, said Yakubu carried her eight-month-old baby a day before he died.

“I and nannies remember him carrying my eight-month-old baby boy that time. When we received news of his death, we couldn’t teach, even the students were crying,” she said.

Yakubu’s friend Abduljabbar Abba said he wasn’t at school at the time. “Someone came to inform me of his demise and I still remember how shocked I was by his sudden death,” he said.

Fela Kuti as nominated by one of our group expert, READS Campaign Africa

Fela Kuti

The great singer and songwriter, Fela Kuti was a legend who received numerous honours during his lifetime. He currently has a record for posthumous honours, including the Channel O Music Video Awards. was recognised as the first Nigerian or African to receive the DSTV award in 2003.

BACKGROUND

Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti also known as Abami Eda, was a Nigerian musician, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist. He is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, a Nigerian music genre that combines West African music with American funk and jazz.

He was one of the greatest of all times. AllMusic described him as "a musical and sociopolitical voice" of international significance.

Kuti was the son of Nigerian women's rights activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. After early experiences abroad, he and his band Africa 70 (featuring drummer and musical director Tony Allen) shot to stardom in Nigeria during the 1970s, during which he was an outspoken critic and target of Nigeria's military juntas.

In 1970, he founded the Kalakuta Republic commune, which declared itself independent from military rule. The commune was destroyed in a 1978 raid that injured Kuti and his mother.

He was jailed by the government of Muhammadu Buhari in 1984, but released after 20 months. He continued to record and perform through the 1980s and 1990s. Since his death in 1997, reissues of his music have been overseen by his son, Femi Kuti.

Kuti's musical style is called Afrobeat. It is a style he largely created, and is a complex fusion of jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional Nigerian, African chants and rhythms.

It contains elements of psychedelic soul and has similarities to James Brown's music. Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native "tinker pan". Tony Allen, Kuti's drummer of twenty years, was instrumental in the creation of Afrobeat. Kuti once stated that "there would be no without ".

Kuti's band was notable for featuring two baritone saxophones when most groups only used one.

This is a common technique in African and African-influenced musical styles and can be seen in funk and hip hop.

His bands sometimes performed with two bassists at the same time both playing interlocking melodies and rhythms. There were always two or more guitarists. The electric West African style guitar in Afrobeat bands is a key part of the sound, and is used to give basic structure, playing a repeating chordal/melodic statement, riff, or groove.

Some elements often present in Kuti's music are the call-and-response within the chorus and figurative but simple lyrics. His songs were also very long, at least 10–15 minutes in length, and many reached 20 or 30 minutes, while some unreleased tracks would last up to 45 minutes when performed live.

Their length was one of many reasons that his music never reached a substantial degree of popularity outside Africa. On some recordings, his songs are divided into two parts: Part 1 being the instrumental, and Part 2 adding in vocals.

Kuti's songs are mostly sung in Nigerian English, although he also performed a few songs in the Yoruba language. His main instruments were the saxophone and the keyboards, but he also played the trumpet, electric guitar, and the occasional drum solo.

The subject of Kuti's songs tended to be very complex. They regularly challenged common received notions in the manner of political commentary through song. Many of his songs also expressed a form of parody and satire. The main theme he conveyed through his music was the search for justice through exploration of political and social topics that affected the common people.

Kuti was known for his showmanship, and his concerts were often outlandish and wild. He referred to his stage act as the "Underground Spiritual Game".

Many expected him to perform shows like those in the Western world, but during the 1980s, he was not interested in putting on a "show". His European performance was a representation of what was relevant at the time and his other inspirations.

Kuti's concerts also regularly involved female singers and dancers, later dubbed as "Queens." The Queens were women who helped influence the popularization of his music.

They were dressed colorfully and wore makeup all over their bodies that expressed their visual creativity.

The singers of the group played a backup role for Kuti, usually echoing his words or humming along, while the dancers would put on a performance.

was part of an Afrocentric consciousness movement that was founded on and delivered through his music.

Kuti is remembered as an influential icon who voiced his opinions on matters that affected the nation through his music.

Since 1998, the festival, an idea pioneered by his daughter Yeni Kuti, is held each year at the New Afrika Shrine to celebrate the life of this music legend and his birthday.

Since Kuti's death in 1997, there has been a revival of his influence in music and popular culture, culminating in another re-release of his catalog controlled by UMG, Broadway, and off-Broadway shows, and new bands, such as Antibalas, who carry the Afrobeat banner to a new generation of listeners.

In 1999, Universal Music France, under Francis Kertekian, remastered the 45 albums that it owned and released them on 26 compact discs.

These titles were licensed globally, except in Nigeria and Japan, where other companies owned Kuti's music.

In 2005, the American operations of UMG licensed all of its world-music titles to the UK-based label Wrasse Records, which repackaged the same 26 discs for distribution in the United States (where they replaced the titles issues by MCA) and the UK.

In 2009, Universal created a new deal for the US and Europe, with Knitting Factory Records and PIAS respectively, which included the release of the Broadway cast recording of the musical Fela! In 2013, FKO Ltd., the entity that owned the rights to all of Kuti's compositions, was acquired by BMG Rights Management.

In 2003, the Black President exhibition debuted at the New Museum for Contemporary Art, New York, and featured concerts, symposia, films, and 39 international artists' works.

American singer Bilal recorded a remake of Kuti's 1977 song "Sorrow Tears and Blood" for his second album, Love for Sale, featuring a guest rap by Common. Bilal cited Kuti's mix of jazz and folk tastes as an influence on his music.

The 2007 film , directed by Thomas McCarthy, depicted a disconnected professor (Richard Jenkins) who wanted to play the djembe; he learns from a young Syrian (Haaz Sleiman) who tells the professor he will never truly understand unless he listens to Fela. The film features clips of Kuti's "Open and Close" and "Je'nwi Temi (Don't Gag Me)".
