640 AM MST Thursday 1/6 – Widespread high winds are expected across much of southeast Wyoming today and tonight with gusts 65-75 MPH common, strongest around Arlington and Elk Mountain. Winds are expected to eventually spread into the Cheyenne area by some point late this afternoon or evening with gusts around 60 MPH possible locally. These winds combined with yesterday’s snowfall could lead to dangerous conditions, especially for western areas with significant blowing and drifting snow likely. Near blizzard conditions will be possible at times with visibilities as low as one quarter of a mile. Travelers should exercise caution and check road conditions by dialing 511 or visiting wyoroad.info. Finally, periods of light snow will remain possible today from far southeast Wyoming into the southern Nebraska Panhandle. Additional accumulations will generally be light, but some areas may receive another inch or two. A small bit of good news: With the increasing winds, temperatures will also begin to rise this evening through Friday morning with overnight temperatures above freezing along and west of the Laramie Range. Many areas may be in the 40s by Friday afternoon.

06/01/2022

The entirety of Nebraska and Iowa (and points north) will see wind chills 20 degrees below zero or colder this morning.

Conditions improve quickly this afternoon.

06/01/2022

** This wind chill advisory has been allowed to expire at noon Thursday**

A wind chill advisory continues until Noon today for all counties in our coverage area for wind chill values down to minus 30 degrees with North winds gusting to around 25 mph. Impacts: The cold wind chill values could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Use caution when outside. Wear appropriate clothing including a hat and gloves.

06/01/2022

Anticipate a frigid start to the day, with morning low temperatures from minus 2 degrees to minus 8 degrees. Combined with northerly winds gusting to 25 mph, wind chill values will range from minus 16 degrees in north central Kansas to minus 28 degrees for central Nebraska this morning. High temperatures will struggle to get to double digits, mainly around 9 to 11 degrees across the area. Expect any lingering snow flurries to end this morning, with partly cloudy skies. Friday will be slightly warmer, with highs in the 20s, although southerly winds gusting to 30 mph will keep wind chill values in the single digits during the afternoon. Saturday will be the warmest day, as high temperatures reach the 40s, with some locations possibly breaking 50 degrees.

Dangerous and unprecedented Severe and Fire Weather conditions are expected today across portions of the Great Plains and Midwest. There is a Moderate Risk (Level 4/5) across much of Iowa and southern Minnesota. Fast-moving severe thunderstorms with widespread damaging wind gusts (some greater than 80 mph), and a few tornadoes (some strong) will be possible late this afternoon and evening. This is the first Moderate Risk in December across this area since records began. Stay weather aware as conditions are forecast to change rapidly.

Extreme fire danger is also likely today as strong wind gusts and very dry conditions will develop across the central and southern Plains. Widespread wind gusts of 60+ mph may support fast moving wild fires within areas of very dry fuels. An Extremely Critical Fire Weather area has been issued and is also the first ever recorded across the Great Plains in December. Avoid using tools that spark and release heat or smoking around flammable materials. For more information on the Severe and Fire weather threats please check with your local National Weather Service office and visit www.spc.noaa.gov.

A very strong storm system will bring dangerous winds to the region Wednesday. The winds will last for several hours and have widespread impacts. Damage to trees and power lines is expected, resulting in power outages. Travel will be very hazardous for high profiles vehicles and delays are possible along Interstates due to overturned tractor trailers. Any loose debris in your yard should be brought indoors before 9 AM Wednesday so it won't be blown around. This includes things like holiday decorations, trashcans, outdoor furniture, etc.

*** THIS POST IS OUTDATED. PLEASE REFER TO THE MOST RECENT POST FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION. ***

We have had a nice run of weather this fall, so today's taste of winter is probably long overdue. Look for light snow to develop from the northwest by mid-afternoon, possibly preceded by rain, drizzle or a brief mix of precipitation. The main accumulating snow will be in south central Nebraska with north of Interstate 80 the most likely region to see 1-3" of snow. Gusty north winds will reduce visibilities, so anticipate winter driving conditions for some areas during the evening commute or headed out to a high school basketball game. 🏀
