Riverside County Sheriff In-Custody Death

On June 26, 2024, at 3:58 a.m., deputies assigned to the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to a residence in the 22000 block of Country Gate Road, Moreno Valley regarding a family disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the mother of the suspect, whom she identified as 46-year-old Joseph Gloria. The victim advised she feared Gloria because he had threatened family members with a wooden rod. She also told deputies Gloria was under the influence of methamphetamine, and he was still armed with the wooden rod. After speaking with Gloria’s mother, deputies determined that Gloria had committed several felony offenses and would be taken into custody.

Deputies contacted Gloria inside of the residence and attempted to speak to him, however, he was uncooperative and refused to comply with the deputies' instructions. Deputies attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender with Gloria for several minutes, but he refused to comply and aggressively advanced toward deputies. Deputies deployed a taser to prevent Gloria from assaulting them. After a brief struggle, deputies were able to place handcuffs on Gloria and take him into custody. Several minutes after being handcuffed, Gloria became unresponsive. Deputies immediately rendered medial aid and requested paramedics. Paramedics arrived and continued life-saving measures, but Gloria was ultimately pronounced deceased. The cause of death is pending autopsy results.

The names of the involved deputies will not be released. Investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail will lead this investigation. This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Riverside County District Attorney Investigator Eric Crosson or Riverside County Sheriff’s Investigator Rick Ramirez at 951–955–2777.
