US president Donald Trump has lifted sanctions on Turkey following Erdogan’s military action against Syrian Kurds.
The sanctions originally put in place to discourage Turkey from the offensive (alleged to be creating a ‘buffer zone’). However, in the absence of withdrawn American troops, in a deal with Vladimir Putin, Russian troops are now active in the area and are assisting Turkish manoeuvres. It would appear that Trump’s decision to relocate many US troops to Iraq has created a power vacuum happily filled by an ever-increasingly powerful Russia.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu says he cannot form a government to sustain his decade-long hold on power and offers his political rival, Benny Gantz, the opportunity to do so.
In recent Israeli elections (not only the most recent round of voting), there have been signs that Israeli politics are shifting. Netanyahu has lost an ever-dwindling majority and his last term was carried out in coalition.
It is unsure how the situation will evolve.

A bill put forward by independent Sir Oliver Letwin has been passed by a parliamentary majority of 16. The amendment delays the bill thought to be going through day detailed Britain’s exit from the EU. Now MPs have backed a further delay to Brexit despite the EU making it clear they will not allow this.

British government comments that there is no progress towards a Brexit deal, hoped to be achieved ahead of a crucial summit tomorrow.
Perhaps reluctance of politicians at home have complicated the situation, but Boris Johnson’s cabinet have had weeks to carry at these negotiations and no progress appears to have been achieved.

Donald Trump recently ordered the withdrawal of American troops in Syria. These forces had been supporting Kurdish allied fighters in the region suppress and contain former-IS (Islamic State) troops.
Following their removal, Turkey has begun an offensive to establish a 30km safe zone around its border. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that this is an opportunity for ethnic cleansing and to settle engrained cultural differences with the Kurds.
Without the presence of American authority, political enemies like Russia, Syria and Iran have seen a surge in power and influence in the region, undermining decades of American administration in the Middle East.

Today Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spent the day campaigning in Uxbridge for an election that isn’t even happening.
The country is headed to crash out of the European Union on the 31st October with a withdrawal deal - this is why.
