Since June 24, 1571 when Manila became the capital of the Philippine archipelago.
Being one of the oldest settlements in the Philippines, Manila (Maynila) would eventually be established as the capital of the archipelago during the Spanish era on June 24, 1571. Since then, the city has featured a number of seals and coat of arms. The most recognizable of which is the merlion, or the sea lion. It is defined as half-lion on the upper part, and half-dolphin (or a fish in the historical tradition) on the lower part. It has been the single, constant, identifying symbol of the governing authority of the Philippines since the Spanish era, and is originally part of heraldic blazon of the Coat of Arms of Manila since the Spanish Royal Grant of 1596. Among other cities, Singapore would also adopt the merlion (鱼尾狮) as a symbol, but this only by the 1960s.
This infographic featuring the symbols of Manila was courtesy of the Presidential Communications (Government of the Philippines). Correction is merited to the 1609 caption. It should be Morga, not Morgan, in reference to the Spanish official Antonio de Morga. Learn more about Manila's history: https://history-ph.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-metro-manila-concept.html
