Is it feasible to use divorce law to address violence against women and children?

"Hailed as the bastion of Christianity in Asia, the Philippines boasts of 86.8 million Filipinos- or 93 percent of a total population of 93.3 million – adhering to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Yet, the admonition for husbands to love their wives as their own bodies just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her failed to prevent, or even to curb, the pervasiveness of violence against Filipino women.

What are the unacceptable behaviors of Filipinos?
Source: https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-worst-and-best-things-about-Filipinos

• Religious Hypocrisy. As a Filipino, this is what turns me off very often. Many Filipinos are devoted to their religion and all the ceremonies required of it are faithfully and wholeheartedly observed. But outside the church, mosque, temple and other places of worship, hypocrisy starts to surface. They tend to violate the very core teachings of their religion, its laws and restrictions. For example, many among those Filipinos who classify themselves as “religious” engage in premarital s*x, marital infidelity, political corruption, cheating, gambling, drunkenness, violence, greed, selfishness and other grave trespasses. It has much to say on our present status, because we are considered as one of the most religious countries in Asia yet our government is also one of the most corrupt. It is actually not different from other cultures and traditions in the world, whether Western or Eastern. Religious but hypocrites.

• Bringing uninvited guests in corporate or social events. This is one of the attitudes that would most likely p**s off many people, specially foreigners. It is annoying, because some Filipinos would bring their close friends, acquaintances and family members even if they are the only person invited. It would shock the host of such events, because the accommodation and food had already been estimated by head count per visitor, then unwelcomed guests would show up, and it could potentially ruin the plan or program of the hosts in these events.

• Lack of care for the environment. This is one of the many annoying attitudes that are prevalent in our country. Filipinos, in general, are clean inside their homes. Most parts of the house are spotless and tidy. But when someone observe the surroundings outside of their living space, it is usually dirty and messy, filth and trash are scattered all around. That’s the main reason why many urban areas in the Philippines are heavily polluted, because your average Pinoy is not very much concern of the conditions of his/her environment and the main focus is on the personal space or abode.

• Double Standard Racism. This one is top notch. It says much regarding our interpersonal relationships with foreigners. There is two types of racism in the country, which is positive and negative racism. The former applies to all guests in the archipelago that have typical Euro-American features: those who have blonde hair, blue/green eyes, pale white skin and superb English accent are seen as superiors by many Filipinos. They will typically be treated as honored guests by many. To put it, they will have the best treatment among the foreigners in the archipelago. I’ve read one of the answers here stating that many poor Filipinos knock on his door and begging for alms. I’m sorry, but they don’t have any sense of entitlement, just like what you’ve mentioned. Their doing this, because they have the mindset that because you’re White, you have the power and riches to potentially help them in lifting up their poor living conditions. Every white person is seen as a potential savior. On the other hand, foreigners with skin tones much darker to that of an average Filipino will experience being mocked, joked and made fun of in subtle ways. Filipinos rarely express an overt form of racism. But whether its overt or subtle, it is still an unacceptable form of behavior.

• The wrong concept of “hiya” or “shamefacedness”. Filipinos greatly value their individual honor, and they would do everything just to make their reputations honorable and presentable to the public. The sad thing is, an average Filipino don’t know how to handle individual criticism properly. An attack on a person’s wrongdoing or a public criticism on someone will be perceived as an attack on the honor and reputation of a person. This usually ends up in using violent means just to protect one’s personal honor, making sure that no one would reveal his/her wrongdoings that would potentially ruin his/her reputation. One of the best example on this attitude is the killing of media broadcasters by powerful Filipino politicians to prevent them from disclosing the filthy and disgusting practices they have in office.

• Too much care given by parents on children, causing them to be spoiled brats. This attitude is true mostly on the upper and middle class Filipino families. Parents are giving every bit of provision to their children, including all of the caprices and whims of the child, resulting in too much reliance of the children on the parents, causing most of them to be spoiled brats who would know nothing but to spend their parents’ riches on their wants. Most of the time, these children would not exert much effort and strive hard to fulfill their dreams because they were spoiled by their parents. The sad thing is when the world turned upside down and the family fortune were lost to bankruptcy, most of these Filipino children would be devastated and torned apart, because they are not taught by their parents on how to earn a living and have their own life. Many Filipino children are indeed reliant on their parents and other relatives. This is one of the bad attitudes that we have to change as a people.

• Crab Mentality. This toxic mentality is often seen in many Filipinos who are part of large, social circles. Many Filipinos who have this kind of attitude would be very envious and jealous if a certain person known to him/her would start to reach their dreams and begin to achieve goodness in life. What Crab Filipinos would do is they would spread false rumors and resort to character assassination to pull the other person down, ruining their reputation and harming their relationship with others. To a Filipino Crab, it is only them who are entitled to experience all the good tthings in life, and if they can’t achieve it, neither can you or should you. The pincers of such Filipinos with poisonous attitude should definitely be cut off.

• The toxic “Padrino” system. Padrino is a Spanish word which means “godfather”. This annoying behavior can mostly be observed in the corporate world. It refers to the unfair system of endorsing a person by someone powerful or influential in a certain company or organization that will cause a person, mostly a friend or family member, to easily get hired without having to go through the difficult assessment being expected by ordinary job seekers. The most annoying part of this attitude is that influential people promote their close friends and family members to important positions in a company or the government, no matter how incompetent or unskilled they may be for a certain position. These influential Filipinos serve as the protector and backer of those closest to them.

• Laziness at the workplace. Many Filipinos lack initiative and dedication in their various fields of endeavor and discipline, and most of these types of Filipinos would not put their 100% effort in maximizing the output, unless heavily supervised or have their work outputs scrutinized.

• Staying silent during tensioned and pressing issues, for the sake of the preservation of SOCIAL HARMONY. This one is pretty common. Many Filipinos would just bow and nod their heads when disagreeing with someone close to them. This is due to the fact that Filipinos, and South East Asians in general, value smooth sailing interpersonal relationships and social harmony, above the radical and hurtful truth. This attitude is also one of the reasons why corruption is so prevalent in the government. It is due to the fact that the colleagues, friends and family of those corrupt officials are just tolerating them of their wrongdoing, because they are afraid to openly confront or criticize a certain person, in order to prevent quarrels and tensions to surface between the person involved and the people associated with the issue. This type of attitude must be put to an end, and I hope the future generation of Filipinos would be confident, frank and brave enough to call out the people close to them in their wrongdoing.

These are just some of the annoying qualities of a Filipino that must be changed. I am criticizing my own country because I love it so much, and all of what’s wrong in our society today should be put on the surface, for us to be able to clean the entire mess and filth in the archipelago altogether.

13 REASONS WHY WE OPPOSE HOUSE BILL 6398 (Maharlika Investment Fund/PH Sovereign Wealth Fund) 🧵
~ David Michael San Juan

1. The bill has no clear and solid provision for ample worker/employee representation in the fund's governing body, considering that a bulk of the fund will technically come from GSIS and SSS members' pooled contributions. PERA NATIN 'YUN PERO WALA TAYONG KINATAWAN!

2. Land Bank and DBP funds will also be used for the fund. That would drastically limit the funds which the said government banks could lend to MSMEs (the backbone of our economy, in terms of jobs creation) and ordinary citizens.

3. GSIS & SSS are able to invest pooled members' contributions into so many things even without the sovereign fund in place.Bill would only further bloat existing bureaucracy that gobbles up millions if not billions of unnecessary administrative expenses.Bloated bureaucracy = BAD.

4. The bill's limit on administrative and operating expenses is not good enough. Pera natin, gagamiting pampasarap ng mga burukrata na wala namang alam at walang ginagawang para sa bayan. NO WAY!

5. The bill allows investments on "Financial derivatives". THESE ARE HIGH-RISK INVESTMENTS! Have they forgotten 2008? For starters, watch "The Big Short" (2015), or listen to Fascinating Aida's "The Market." We could lose everything, mind you.

6. The bill's mention of investments on "Listed or unlisted equities..." and "Joint ventures or co-Investments" may seem innocent but these can actually be used to favor big business interests of corporations with links to ruling dynasties. Remember, wala tayo sa Norway.

7. "Third party fees and all charges incurred in connection with the establishment and management of the MIF" which will be charged to the fund sounds so fishy and unnecessary, especially without ample caps and limitations in the bill.

8. Honoraria and allowances and reimbursements for the fund's bureaucrats are unacceptable, especially that most of them will certainly come from salaried govt or corporate posts too. Sobrang garapal na 'yan!

9. The bill has no mechanism to directly give profits to citizens (especially SSS and GSIS members). Profits would instead be channeled to the government financial institutions. And the profits are not even guaranteed ha.

10. As the bill allows the fund to draw from the annual General Appropriations Act or supplemental appropriations, this can possibly reduce available funds for vital social services such as healthcare, education, housing etc.

11. The bill contains no provision to prioritize investments on "green" jobs creation (especially in the renewable energy sector), agricultural modernization, and industrialization, which could potentially limit any real national benefits from the fund's operations. Para san pa?

12. The bill’s provision on rewards and incentives for bureaucrats is capricious and dangerous without stronger provisions on public accountability of the fund’s administrators. Again, remember, wala tayo sa Norway.

13.The bill is authored by at least two legislators connected to the plunderous dynasty that the Filipino people ousted in 1986. And the same ruling dynasty will have immense power over the sovereign wealth fund for sure. That's a BIG problem!

We don't want the fox to guard the chicken coop, di ba? Mauubos ang manok! Hindi pa ba tayo nadala sa nangyari from 1972-1986? Please share. Ang mga katiting natin na pensyon sa SSS at GSIS ang nakasalang dito. Kausapin din natin ang mga katrabaho para tutulan ito.

'JOURNALISM REMAINS A DANGEROUS PROFESSION IN THE COUNTRY'

READ: Veteran broadcaster Percy Mabasa or “Percy Lapid,” who had been critical of the Marcos-Duterte governments, is the second journalist killed under the Marcos Jr. administration, according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).

"The killing shows that journalism remains a dangerous profession in the country. That the incident took place in Metro Manila indicates how brazen the perpetrators were, and how authorities have failed to protect journalists as well as ordinary citizens from harm," writes NUJP.

The Southern Police District says it has already formed a special investigation task force to identify the culprits and motive behind the brutal killing of Mabasa. | via Mariejo Ramos, Philippine Daily Inquirer

The recent display by the Philippine Air Force of at least 5 of their FA-50PH Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft flying to es**rt the arrival of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. from the US has proven that that the report of TV5's defense reporter Manny Mogato that the PAF only have 3 operational FA-50s was inaccurate.

But this did not address the main issue of the report which is the PAF's long-standing problem of lacking sufficient spare parts for its aircraft, and the delay this causes in the maintenance work of its aircraft and returning them to full operationalization immediately.

Going back to the reports from TV5 and government news outlet Philippine News Agency, it can be seen that the Philippine AIr Force through its spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuello Castillo CONFIRMED that they are waiting for the delivery of spare parts for their non-operational FA-50s.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1184183

This means THE PAF CONFIRMS THAT THEY HAVE NON-OPERATIONAL FA-50s, AND THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE SPARE PARTS IN THEIR INVENTORY.

Through this display by the PAF, how did it address the issue of not having spare parts in their inventory? Did the display improve their spare parts procurement and planning processes?

Did the display improve the overall readiness of the FA-50 fleet and its ability to meet their readiness and operational targets?

The answers are obvious but would the PAF and many others be honest to say that it was just a show to defend itself from criticisms, and not really to address the issues it is facing. That the es**rt flight was a political move to get support from Marcos supporters, considering there is no need to send 5 out of the country's 12 fighter aircraft to do es**rt flights.

Speaking of operational readiness, the PAF actually have targets that it sets out annually and are used to gauge its performance. If we're not wrong, normally it is around 80% or higher. These levels of readiness were attained by the PAF when the FA-50s were in its early years of operation due to them not yet reaching their maintenance periods, but in recent years they have fallen short as shown on PAF's published annual reports.

Based on this, the PAF should have at least 80% of its fighters, or around 9 aircraft available and fully operational at any given time, while a maximum of 3 aircraft are acceptable to be in different levels of maintenance or other reasons of non-operationalization.

With only 5 aircraft shown to be operational yesterday, how high is the probability that the PAF have 4 other FA-50s that were operational yesterday but did not participate in the es**rt flight?

If there are only 5 aircraft that are fully operational, would meeting only 42% operational readiness really be acceptable to the PAF?

Those other defense and aviation-related pages who were happy that more than 3 FA-50s are flying while attacking other defense pages and websites about it and not looking at the main point of the report which is lack of spare parts and poor logistical planning and procurement process only shows how shallow their understanding is of defense issues are, and that they are no different from fanboys. They are only concerned of their image and not really doing anything to help the PAF address its problems.

ALL AIR AND NO FORCE.
23/09/2022

ALL AIR AND NO FORCE.

All air and no force. Again! 🤪

That's the old joke often encountered against the Philippines Air Force (PAF) due to it's lack of fighter jets after the retirement of their Northrop F-5A/B Freedom Fighters in 2005. Over the years, the PAF has attempted to rebuild their capabilities by introducing the South Korean KAI FA-50PH light fighters to their fleet. However, all is not well.

The Philippines armed forces at large had been plagued by a lackluster maintenance culture which often meant that they seldom bothered to plan their maintenance requirements, especially the provision of spare parts, properly. This has lead to a culture of wastage that saw even relatively new equipment left to rot and become useless for the lack of proper maintenance support.

Nowhere is the situation more starkly Illustrated than in the PAF where out of the 12 KAI FA-50PH that were introduced back in 2017, only 3 are fully operational with the rest grounded due to lack of spare parts and maintenance. This is a serious lapse as the FA-50PH is currently the Philippines only de facto fighter that is able to conduct air defense patrols of the country's airspace. A mere 3 fully functional aircraft is simply not enough to cover the entire country's airspace.

No matter what and how many new equipment are introduced, they will all become useless in short order if they are not properly maintained. And this is for an air force that has traditionally been considered one of the weakest in the South East Asian region that still don't have any proper fighters to speak of. All air and no force indeed. ~Clorox.

50 years ago tonight then Defense Secretary’s convoy was ambushed inside the quiet gated subdivision Wack-wack. This, we are told, was the trigger for the Martial Law decree signed by Ferdinand Marcos, Sr on September 17, dated September 21, but withheld until further orders. In 1986 Enrile said the ambush was staged, but in his 2012 memoirs Enrile says the ambush was real. Which version of Enrile’s should we believe?
From Marcos’ own diary it is clear that the Martial Law proclamation was implemented on the evening of September 22, after the Enrile ambush. But, in a speech before the Philippine Historical Association, on November 28, 1972 Marcos told the historians, for the record, “even before the ambuscade on Secretary Ponce Enrile, I had already ordered the enforcement of the proclamation.” Which version of Marcos’ should we believe.
These questions challenge not just historians like me, but ordinary people who should remember what happened 50 years ago and declare
Part of Ferdinand Marcos’ diary entry for 22 September 1972 (See scan of the original that is identical both in the Malacañang and PCGG files) reads:
“Sec. Juan Ponce Enrile was ambushed near Wack Wack at about 8:00 PM tonight. It was a good thing he was riding in his security car as a protective measure. His first car which he usually uses was the one riddled by bullets from a car parked in ambush.
“He is now at his DND [Department of National Defense] office. I have advised him to stay there.
“And I have doubled the security of Imelda in the Nayon Pilipino where she is giving dinner to the UPI [United Press International] and AP [Associated Press] as well as other wire services.
“This makes the martial law proclamation a necessity.
“Imelda arrived at 11:35 PM in my Electra bullet proof car to be told that Johnny had been ambushed. It is all over the radio.”
