This wonderful actress, Sydney Erickson, is coming on board our sizzle shoot for Savage Daughter to play someone near and dear to my heart, a woman who is now a Tribal Elder, my grandfather’s sister, who told me what it felt like to watch her young siblings be spirited away from the reservation in a BIA car in the 1940s, to be sent to the four corners of the earth, adopted into white families, one of whom she did not see again until 2018. Savage Daughter is a fictionalized account of the story of my own family, the way I remember it, the way it was told to me. I think you could say it’s “Based on True Events.” I hope to tell this story to shed light on institutionalized racism and generational trauma. My great-aunt told me this story because she wanted me to share it, the essence of it, in a respectful way. I didn’t know my grandfather, but I believe it’s what he would want as well. I can always see him looking back, hand pressed against the window pane, watching his sister run and run and never catch up.
