Rufus trotted into our lives two Springs ago.
I’d like to say it was love from day one. It was not. He had a deadness in his eyes. He was defeated. He liked our other dog, but wasn’t so sure of us.
He was not house trained. We used to own a living room rug. The floors stand bare now although I think we could replace it if we wanted to. Tempers flared and tension was thick. I had my doubts.
But the first night with him, before Chris ever saw him in person, I held him in my lap, sitting cross legged on the floor, searching his eyes for a glimmer of life and bawling at the emptiness.
Our Rufus is a changed pup. He runs and plays and barks too much at leaves running down the street. He leaps at dinner time and sulks just like his sis, Roxy, taught him. He naps like a champ. He is so *comfortable* now.
When he looks at me, I see light, love, and hope. Thank you for walking home with us, my sweet little boy.
