Last week, I had a fantastic live mixing session with Devil's Flower. From the comfort of their home, using their speakers and headphones, they were able to assist me in creating the sounds and the mix for the upcoming EP.
We had a lot of fun and created some banger tracks 🤘

🥁 Even if you record drums in a small/non-reflective room, I still recommend using a pair of well-placed room mics 🎙️.
They will really help glue the kit together. The cymbals will sound more 3D, and you have a more natural sound to blend with the overheads, even when the room isn’t reflective at all ✨✨✨

🤔 Be creative, searching for the best spot in your recording space or rehearsal room. In non-ideal rooms, it often helps to face the microphone to the wall (facing away from the drum kit). Just use your ears 👂, and don’t be scared to make several test recordings to find the optimum in your room.

❓❓What are your secret tips for recording drums in non-ideal spaces❓❓

🦊Hi Vulpes Fam 🦊, after some busy weeks making live music and touring around Europe and the UK 🎸, I am finally back in the studio working on a fantastic single of the Swedish band Surfing The Orbit . Check them out they are amazing ✨.
Despite the geographical distance between my client and me 🌍, my goal is to have them very close when I am mixing or mastering.
For that reason, I offer a live mixing session to all my clients, in which they can assist via a high-quality audio and video stream 📽️. This process ensures that I can create the sound the artist aimed for without going through multiple feedback rounds.

If you also want help creating the sound you have always aimed for, drop us a message here or book your slot on our website.

🎙️Vocal Verb🎙️
I often spend a lot of time choosing the right reverb for the lead vocals in the mixing process. This is such an essential step because you define the “space” in which the main element of the song sits.

➡️ Today I want to recommend one of my favourite “spices”. If I’d had to pick only one reverb for the rest of my life, I would definitely be the ✨ Valhalla DSP VintageVerb ✨. This plugin offers you a variety of natural-sounding verbs. In addition, you can choose between 3 colour modes that give you the typical sound of the specific era.

❓❓ What is your go-to reverb when it comes to lead vocals ❓❓

❓Plugins vs Hardware ❓🤔
I mainly mix in the box, and I love my Universal Audio plugins. They allow me to work fast and efficiently, and I can access various superb compressors and EQs just with some mouse-clicks 🖱 🖥

When it comes to mastering, I prefer a hybrid setting. My UAD apollo system gives me enough I/O to sum all my busses with the amazing Tegeler Audio Manufaktur Tube Summing Mixer. I then add some flavour with the Crème by adding subtle compression and air to the mixes 🤤

❓❓❓What is your favourite gear when it comes to mixing and mastering ❓❓❓

What are your favourite speakers?
After some experiments with different speaker brands, I fell in love with the Neumann KH80 with the KH750 sub.

Probably some people claim that they don’t have the most exciting sound. But they truly allow me to accurately hear what is going on in the mix and find annoying frequencies very fast. I really like their clarity and very direct sound.

I plan to add a bigger pair of speakers soon. If any of you has some recommendations, just let me know in the comments.

Hello Vulpes Fam,
In the last post, we talked about the importance of choosing the right mic for a singer.
Today, I want to give singers some tips, how they can drastically improve the performance of a recording session.

1. Be prepared: Nothing in the mix can fix a bad performance. So, rehearsing the song over and over and knowing the lyrics perfectly is the key.
2. Warm-Up: Don't underestimate how much better your voice sounds when it is warmed up. There are plenty of cool YouTube Videos out there demonstrating some fantastic warm-up exercises.
3. Split it up: If you get tired or some parts of a song a hard to nail, just split the song up and record part by part.
4. Do it again: Don't hesitate to make several takes of the same part. Listen to small details and nuances and choose the best sounding take.
5. Control: Practice controlling your pitch, dynamics and emotions. Especially the feeling during your vocal performance needs to be on point and is difficult to fix later.

Last but not least: DON'T fix it in the mix: Sure, professional engineers can edit and correct the pitch and timing of nearly any vocal take. But in the end, a more solid recording will always result in the better production.

If you have some additional tips and techniques, just let me know in the comments below and follow this page for more mixing and recording tips.

Every singer is different, and so are mics. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different mics and placements. Choosing the right mic for the singer and song will drastically influence the outcome of a production.

So, it is always good to have some solid options: Above, you see my beloved Amethyst from the very innovative Latvian company JZ Microphones. With its vintage vibe, it delivers super nice warm lows and crispy highs. I really love it, especially on male vocals.

And btw, it is definitely not always the most expensive mic that wins the shootout. I had situations the good old SM58 delivered just what needed in that situation. Because in the end, what counts is how it sounds.

Vulpes What?!?
For the ones of you that asked themselves, what the heck is a Vulpes?
Vulpes is the Latin word for a fox, which also explains the shape of my Logo 🦊

Foxes are my all-time favourite animals. First, I mean, have you ever seen a fox? Just see how fluffy and cute they are. But seriously, I am really fascinated by these super clever creatures, which part of the dog family but also have a lot in common with cats (for example, they have retractable claws and hunt like cats).

Did you know that, unlike their close relatives, the wolves, dogs, and jackals, foxes are not pack animals. Instead, they live in small family units while raising their young but otherwise live and hunt alone.

Anyway, enough of this short excursion into the foxes world.
Have a nice day, and stay tuned for music-related posts.

P.S. For the ones in Luxembourg: Happy National Day 🇱🇺
