Meet our last set of experts. Yes, experts, plural. Our animal adaptation book was reviewed by not one, but TWO experts!

Dr. Harvey Lillywhite has a PhD in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. A former professor of biology at the University of Florida, he is currently the director of the university’s Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory. Dr. Lillywhite has studied the biology of snakes for more than thirty years.

Dr. Andreas Chavez has a PhD in biology from the
University of Washington. He is currently an assistant professor at Ohio State University. Dr. Chavez’s areas of expertise include speciation and adaptation.

As with all of our science books, every word and image in this book was vetted and approved by both of our experts, both of whom had tons of extra fun facts to add to this book!

Sketches are coming in on our new short vowel books!

Meet Nat and Dad, the stars of one of our two new short A books.

The first 5 books in our upcoming short vowel set align to UFLI’s steps 1-21, using only the following letters: short a, m, s, t, p, f, short i, n, nasalized a, short o, d, c /k/, short u, g, b, short e, -s /s/, and -s /z/

Each book is 16 pages, a great start for readers who don’t have the stamina for our full 24-page books.

Sketches are slowly coming in on these books and I’m excited to share as they show up!

What do you think? Would love to hear your first take on Nat!

A Bad Fit is part of a new 5-book CVC printed set coming out (hopefully) at the end of the year.

The stories are still in progress, but I’m excited to share as they come together!

I’ve been busy working up a new CVC story, but I. AM. STUMPED.

Not on the story. That I have done, and I can’t wait to share the art as it comes in! But on a name for our protagonist. I keep coming up with Tom, but he doesn’t LOOK like a Tom.

That’s where you come in. Hit me with your best CVC boy names!

Reviewed by experts. Really!

Meet Dr. Albert Wandui.

Dr. Wandui has a PhD in physics from Caltech and a BS in physics from Stanford University. Dr. Wandui is currently completing postdoctoral work at Caltech, after which he will be moving to a position at the Jet Propulsion Lab. In his free time, he enjoys building telescopes and studying black holes. Dr. Wandui’s area of study is observational cosmology.

Dr. Wandui has reviewed every word, every diagram, and every photo in this book for scientific accuracy!

I can’t wait to share the full book with you soon!

Before I’d heard of decodables, I wrote a line of early readers. Back then, I thought short words meant easy. Like many of you, I know better now. But as we run through our stock on these, we need to decide what to do with them. We don’t want to reprint as is, but they are fun stories and it seems a waste not to share them.

Like our decodables, I wrote these as mini-picture books. The art enhances the story, it doesn’t offer cues for guessing. So the question is: do I rework the text to be truly decodable or do we just scrap the books?

These are 32 pages, so we could make them longer stage 9 books for advancing readers or we could try to make a stage 10 out of them.

Chuck or keep? Stage 9 or something beyond?
Let me know what you think!

We take Science seriously!

I know that our decodable books are used in a lot of classrooms. That’s why I put so much work and careful thought into crafting our Decodable Science Readers.

From polling teachers about the subjects to cover (thank you to all who replied) to getting your feedback on a more micro level to engaging a panel of first and second grade teachers to review the final materials to ensure they lined up with what was taught in class, every word and concept in these books has been thoughtfully chosen.

But I know that just telling you it’s carefully thought out doesn’t tell you how and when to use the books in class. That’s why I’ve also put together this NGSS alignment.

This alignment was created by me and is not endorsed by NGSS. The books may not fully cover every subject noted, but they do touch on the topics within each standard noted (some more than others).

Many of you have asked me for word counts for each our books so that you can determine percent accuracy. It’s taken some time, (thanks, Science Readers!) but the counts are finally ready.

These are not number of unique words in the books. It is the total word count in each story. And for those of you paying attention to the title page, I’ve added a count that includes the title, too.

The first look at the cover for our nonfiction boxed set is in and I need an opinion.

The individual books are labeled “Decodable Science Reader” with the the topic in the corner (swipe for an example). But how about the box?

Should we call it a ”decodable science reader” with “nonfiction” as the topic or “nonfiction decodable reader” with “science” as the topic?

Does one speak to you more than the other?

How do you feel about the word EYE?

I currently use it in our upcoming adaptations book to describe both a camel’s adaptations and a meerkat’s adaptation. But it’s not an easily decodable word and it’s not currently accounted for in our scope.

So what I want to know is, what do you think of the word EYE? Can your first graders read it? Should we keep it or lose the adaptation?

To left align or not left align…that is the question.

With our decodable fiction, our text is center aligned. It works well because it balances the page, and it’s only 2 lines of text. But nonfiction is more academic. And more text!

Visually, I like the balance of the centered text over centered art, but it’s a bit untraditional, so we’re trying it left-aligned too.

Which do you like better? Left or center?

Do any of these speak to you? (If not the image itself, the concept of the image.)
