Dueling Trumpets!
On this dive I noticed some frantic activity off in the distance. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a couple of West Atlantic trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus) apparently having a duel! Reminds me of a sword-fight!

Colorful Eye!
In this video, a Conger Moray (Gymnothorax miliaris) looks out from its lair. The eel’s vibrantly colorful eye does nothing to detract from its rather menacing appearance.

What a Beauty!
One species of angelfish that I find particularly charming is the Rock Beauty (Holacanthus tricolor). The deep black color of their body makes such a striking contrast to the vivid yellow color of their face.

Eel Real Close!
The spotted moray (Gymnothorax moringa) is a medium to large moray eel. Call me crazy, but I love to see how close I can get to these fierce looking creatures.

Bashful Burrfish!
I wanted to get a shot of this adorable spotted burrfish (Chilomycterus reticulatus) from every angle but it kept turning to keep its good side towards the camera.

Gray Angelfish!
I had a curious little encounter with a Gray Angelfish (Pomacanthus arcuatus) while it was tending to the reef. After swimming towards me it tipped back and just peacefully floated there for several seconds.

Yellowhead Jawfish!
The Yellowhead Jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) is very shy. I had to wait quite some time for this little critter to poke its head out so I could capture this wonderful close up.

Atlantic Blue Tang!
A lovely school of Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) busy foraging for food. They are herbivorous and constantly eating due to their inefficient digestive system.

Smooth Trunkfish!
A day in the life of a Smooth Trunkfish (Rhinesomus triqueter). Using its protuberant lips it expels a jet of water to clear away sand and reveal the shallowly buried invertebrates upon which it feeds.

French Angelfish!

Close Encounter!
Another close encounter with a large Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi). The scars on her side may have been caused by a male attempting to mate with her.

Shark Up Close!

Caribbean Reef Shark!
Sharks are one of my top five favorite marine creatures to dive with. Here we have a very large and healthy Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi), the most commonly encountered reef shark in the Caribbean Sea.

Band of Blennies!
This lively band of blennies is the Panamic fanged blenny (Ophioblennius steindachneri), a species found in coral reefs in the eastern Pacific ocean. They reach a length of 18 centimeters (7.1 in).

Wall of Fish!
A veritable wall of fish! Notice how dark the sea floor is? That is entirely due to how densely packed together all the fish are. After the wall of fish passes by you can see it’s actually quite bright down there.

Eyeshadow Fish!
This alluring creature is a Galapagos Ringtail Damselfish (Stegastes beebei) or what I like to call an Eyeshadow Fish in honor of the lovely highlight of color around its eyes.

Ocean Floor!
A shot of the ocean floor taken just off the coast of Marchena Island at a dive site called Punta Espejo. The island itself is rarely visited these days but divers come here to enjoy the abundant marine life in the area.

Rarest Guineafowl!
This is the rarest variation of Guineafowl Puffer (Arothron meleagris), a mix of the dark and yellow forms. This concludes my series on the color variations of the Guineafowl Puffer. :)

Guineafowl Puffer!
This is Arothron meleagris, commonly known as the Guineafowl Puffer. They have three distinctive color variations: dark brown with white spots, bright yellow with black spots and a mix of the two patterns.

Blacknosed Butterflyfish!
The Blacknosed Butterflyfish (Johnrandallia nigrirostris). Encountered around the Galápagos Islands and in the Sea of Cortez. Highly active during the day, they inhabit coral reefs and rocky areas feeding on crustaceans, mollusks and algae.

So Many Schools!
One of the things I enjoyed most about diving in the Galápagos Islands was seeing so many schools of fish! Angelfish, Surgeonfish, Pufferfish! Can you identify any of the others?

Against The Current!
Diving an extremely remote location like Roca Redonda is not for the faint of heart. The current here is very strong. To make any real progress against it we had to literally drag ourselves along the ocean floor. Notice how quickly the bubbles are swept away.

Exploring the world one dive at a time!
This is my updated dive map as of 2022 showing the progress of my quest to cover the globe in dive flags!
I had some really epic adventures this year; exploring the Galápagos Islands, Indonesia and returning to the Sea of Cortez. Along the way I met some truly wonderful people and made lots of new friends. I also checked a bunch of new marine life encounters off my wish list!
I want to thank everyone who follows me and especially those who take the time to comment, I really appreciate it.
Can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store. Let’s go diving!

Mexican Hogfish!
The Mexican hogfish (Bodianus diplotaenia) is a species of wrasse native to the eastern Pacific Ocean. This looks to be an old adult male. Younger males have a vertical yellow stripe down the middle of their sides.
