This weekend, Casey is back for another episode of . After a mini-vacation, it’s his turn to pick the theme. And being the problematic Canadian he is, he picked Canadian horror. That gave us a chance to talk about his pick, THE VOID, and Steph’s pick, INFINITY POOL.

Did Casey pick The Void because it’s the only Canadian horror film he’s heard of? And did Steph pick Infinity Pool because it’s artsy and weird and guaranteed to p**s Casey off? Tune in to find out!

In case you missed it, we talked about WTF Horror on the last episode of . We dared to dig into the experimental horror films SKINAMARINK (out now on Shudder) and the unusual festival darling RAZZENNEST (coming soon). #1 on our list of underrated “AI GONE WRONG” films is Richard Stanley’s HARDWARE from 1990.

“In a devasated postnuclear America, an ex-soldier brings home spare andropid parts found out scavenging to his artist girlfriend. But the parts belong to an advanced droid that can reassemble itself and is programmed to kill.

A stylish, visually intriguing work of sci-fi horror cinema with a killer soundtrack, this strange yet mesmerizing cyberpunk-influenced cult gem is a rare treat. Layered with rich philosophical musings, it’s a bleak and nihilistic vision that’s smart and subversive.” - Steph (Cheer)

Unfortunately, HARDWARE isn’t currently streaming. But you can find it online if you do some digging. Trust us, it’s worth it.

Obviously, we only scratched the surface of great AI horror films here, and we purposely omitted the big names so we could try to introduce you to some hidden gems.

#2 on our list of underrated “AI GONE WRONG” films is 2014’s dark and tense EX MACHINA from Alex Garland.

“An advanced AI named Ava (Alicia Vikander) has been developed by tech CEO Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). He invites his employee, hotshot programmer Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), to join him for a week at his sprawling estate to test Ava’s ability to pass for human. It’s not long before Caleb falls for the seductive Ava, who convinces him to help her escape before Nathan discards her for a more advanced model. It’s a comelling and utterly chilling look at the ethical considerations of AI and how far science can and should go.” - Steph (Cheer)

Watch it on HBO MAX.

#3 on our list of underrated “AI GONE WRONG” films is the 2020 hidden gem RENT-A-PAL.

“Most AI films offer a glimpse of a futuristic tomorrow, but RENT-A-PAL takes us back in time to the VHS heyday, when a lonely bachelor named David finds a strange videtape. He forms a kind of odd friendship with the tape’s charismatic host, Andy. However, Andy's friendship comes at a cost, and David desperately struggles to afford the price of admission.

It’s a film that explores loneliness and our desperate need to connect. And though it’s got a great retro charm, it has much to say about our contemporary world and how easy it is trip and fall into the hate-filled internet rabbit hole. If that’s all a little heady, tune in for Wil Wheaton’s deeply unsettling and pitch perfect performance.” - CHEER (Steph)

Watch RENT-A-PAL on Hulu.

#4 on our list of underrated “AI GONE WRONG” films is the 2018 Netflix sci-fi thriller TAU.

“TAU tells the story of a scientist who creates a futuristic smart home that can take any form of command and a woman named Julia, who gets kidnapped by the scientist and forced to survive the home's conditions.

A Frankenstein tale for the modern age, the misunderstood monster in this case is a super-powered AI named TAU. Born of a narcissistic evil genius, the creation is far more sympathetic than its creator. The film explores philosophical questions about agency and what makes us human. Though it didn’t get a lot of love from critics and is far from perfect, there are a few reasons to tune in, including some cool visual style, the presence of bad ass final girl Maika Monroe, and the most compelling reason of all: Gary Oldman as the voice of Tau. What?!!” - CHEER (Steph)

In honor of the new season of , we’re bringing back the “Best of” countdown to get you psyched for our upcoming AI HORROR episode on 2/5. So, if you loved M3GAN and want some more awesome AI gone wrong films to watch, we’ve got you covered.

#5 on our list is UPGRADE.

“A body horror sci-fi film, UPGRADE is a unique, ultra-violent film with lots of action and plenty of blood and gore to please horror fans. The story revolves around an experimental implantd designed to help those in need. Logan Marshall-Green is Grey, a man who agrees to have the chip inserted into his brain in an effort to seek some well-deserved revenge. Only too late does he realize the cost of giving control of his body over to an AI. It’s a must-see hidden gem from writer/director Leigh Whannell, the briliant mind behind THE INVISIBLE MAN (director) and SAW (writer).” - CHEER (Steph)

UPGRADE is available now to rent on VOD.
